2011 Annual Report
Chairman
President
To Our Donors and Friends,
&
NorthPointe Resources has been offering support services to individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities
(I/DD) since the 1950’s. Our headquarters, The Killian Center, is located in Zion, on the shores of Lake Michigan.
The ships that sailed on Lake Michigan carried a wide variety of cargo and people. Some historians have equated their
importance in the development of the Great Lakes to that of the covered wagons during the westward movement.
Without the people and cargo these ships carried, development of the United States would have occurred at a much
slower pace. Just as the ships that sail the Great Lakes, we carry resources of services to so many with I/DD and mental
health issues. Unfortunately, the State of Illinois continues to knock the wind out of our sails with underfunded rates,
elimination of funded services, late reimbursements and unfunded mandates. Yet, we still navigate in a forward direction.
Our strength during these challenging times has been proactive support from staff, volunteers, families and contributors.
“The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change;
the realist adjusts the sails.” - William A. Ward
New to our day program is the “Choice Program.” This program augments and promotes personal growth. The skills
taught in the classes help provide opportunities to acquire a more independent life.
“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty.
Anyone who keeps learning stays young.” - Henry Ford
We didn’t wait for the political parties as they tried to explain the best plan to help secure jobs in this recession. We hit
the ground running and have seen increased success in the following areas; training, advocating, securing community
employment as well as securing fulfillment work in our day program.
“…measure yourself by what you should have accomplished with your ability.” - John Wooden
NorthPointe has been awarded $750,000 to implement a new initiative throughout the State of Illinois called
“HealthMatters”. This project aims to introduce and promote health awareness and advocacy for children with disabilities.
“The greatest wealth is health.” - Virgil
You will notice from reading this report that the work of NorthPointe, along with State funding, is dependent on the
generosity of donors, the selflessness of volunteers and the dedication of staff. Life is like a sailboat; when there is no wind,
the only way to keep moving forward is to drop the sails and start rowing.
On behalf of the staff, individuals and their families, thank you for helping us make a difference in the lives of so many.
