The most i m p o r t a n t work of the c e n t r e will b e t h e
d e v e l o p m e n t of t h e T h o r i u m h i g h t e m p e r a t u r e reactor,
which will b e ,a m a j o r c o n t r i b u t i o n to t h e G e r m a n
n u c l e a r programme. For t h e y e a r s 1968 to 1972 this
p r o g r a m m e p r o v i d e s for e x p e n d i t u r e of DM 5,000
million.

it stood at 43 p e r cent, to 17 per cent in 1966. During
the .same p e r i o d t h e p r o p o r t i o n of capital m a r k e t
funds rose from 25 p e r cent to m o r e t h a n 60 per cent.
The p r o p o r t i o n of social h o u s i n g b e i n g b u i l t a n n u a l l y
stood at ,around 70 p e r cent in t h e first y e a r s of the
Federal Republic of G e r m a n y . It h a d fallen to a r o u n d
a t h i r d of t h e last year. In total, almost 50 p e r c e n t
of the ten million n e w d w e l l i n g s b e l o n g to the social
h o u s i n g p r o g r a m m e and h a v e b e e n p r o m o t e d with
public funds.

German beer drinking does
not look like diminishing,
a n d s a t u r a t i o n of t h e m a r k e t is still a long w a y off. The
b r e w e r s h a v e s t r e n g t h e n e d t h e i r h o m e sales techn i q u e s and are g a i n i n g n e w customers. Effective
a d v e r t i s i n g is a t t e m p t i n g to p e r s u a d e w o m e n to t a k e
up t h e b e e r d r i n k i n g habit. In future w e a t h e r conditions could, h o w e v e r , e x e r t a s t r o n g e r i n f l u e n c e on
b e e r consumption. The IFO Institute e s t i m a t e s b e e r
sales s u b j e c t to t a x a t i o n a t 75.4 million h e c t o l i t r e s
a n d the b e e r tax r e v e n u e at DM 1,042.6 million for
1967; for 1968 77.4 million h e c t o l i t r e s a n d DM 1073.4
million; 1971 87.0 million h e c t o l i t r e s and DM 1219.2
million b e e r tax yield.

1967 s h o w t h a t the USA h a s i n c r e a s e d its exports b y

p r e v i o u s y e a r to $ 145.2 million, w h i l e t h e G e r m a n
p h a r m a c e u t i c a l i n d u s t r y h a s i n c r e a s e d its e x p o r t s b y
13 p e r cent to $ 159.5 million in t h e s a m e period.
The tradition, ally h i g h r e p u t a t i o n which G e r m a n p h a r m a c e u t i c a l p r o d u c t s h a v e a b r o a d as well as t h e excellent sales n e t w o r k which h a s b e e n built up are
r e a s o n s for t h e h i g h c o m p e t i t i v e n e s s of t h e industry.
T h e s e ,are, of course, n o t t h e o n l y r e a s o n s for t h e
e x p o r t position; successful r e s e a r c h w o r k is h i g h l y
responsible, too. Of the n e w s u b s t a n c e s of the n e w l y
i n t r o d u c e d m e d i c i n e s b e t w e e n 1961 and 1965 t h e USA
d i s c o v e r e d 22.1 p e r cent, G e r m a n y 18.9 p e r cent,
F r a n c e 18.5 p e r cent, S w i t z e r l a n d 9.7 p e r cent, G r e a t
Britain 7.6 per cent, a n d J a p a n 6.1 p e r cent.

The net a d d i t i o n a l investm e n t was DM 2,134.5 million, c o m p a r e d w i t h DM 1,374.9
million in t h e first half of 1966. The difference comes
from the r e p a y m e n t of loans, liquidations, sales of
p a r t i c i p a t i o n s a n d shares, transfers. T h e F e d e r a l
Economic M i n i s t r y st,ates t h a t t h e t o t a l n e t capital
i n v e s t m e n t in t h e F e d e r a l Republic from Ist Septemb e r 1966 to 30th J u n e 1967 rose to DM 12,762.9
million. Of this 6,372.2 million c a m e from Europe
{2,687.9 million from the Six and DM 3,673.0 million
from t h e EFTA countries). The USA i n v e s t e d DM
6,347.6 million. In t h e d i s t r i b u t i o n a c c o r d i n g to
b r a n c h e s i n d u s t r y r e c e i v e d DM 11,482.1 million of
this foreign i n v e s t m e n t .

w e r e r e g i s t e r e d in the Federal Republic. A c c o r d i n g to
statistical figures of t h e
F e d e r a l Office for M o t o r
T r a n s p o r t this was 173,372 (13.07 p e r cent) less t h a n in
t h e p r e v i o u s y e a r ' s c o r r e s p o n d i n g period. V o l k s w a g e n
holds first rank, w i t h a figure of 307,822 n e w l y registered vehicles, but this w a s still 83989 (21.3 p e r
cent) less v e h i c l e s t h a n in t h e p r e v i o u s year. O p e l
(General Motors) sold 232,271, a fall of 49,963 v e h i c l e s
(17.7 p e r cent), .and Ford sold 193,292 cars, a fall of
46,005 (19.6 p e r cent). N o t all m o t o r m a n u f a c t u r e r s
e x p e r i e n c e d a fall in sales in t h e G e r m a n market. Mercedes, for example, sold 85,514 v e h i c l e s which is a n
i n c r e a s e of 3,486 (4.1 p e r cent) o v e r t h e same p e r i o d
in the p r e c e e d i n g year. Despite t h e purchasers" res t r a i n t a b o v e all also foreign m a k e s such as Renault,
Simca, Peugeot, A u s t i n a n d DAF i n c r e a s e d t h e i r sales.
