Cri$cal and Theore$cal Studies Shane Douthwaite The Importance of the Printing Press in Journalism In this presenta$on I am going to: • Inves$gate the inven$on of the movable type prin$ng press • Explain how the prin$ng press impacted journalism • Show how the prin$ng press was developed in to the modern day Shane Douthwaite Overview • Invented by Johannes Gutenberg in 1456 • The first mechanical movable type printer • Widely regarded as the most important inven$on of the modern period • Started the Prin$ng Revolu$on • Played a key role in the development of the Renaissance, Reforma$on, the Age of Enlightenment and the Scien$fic Revolu$on • Laid the material basis for the modern knowledge-‐based economy • Encouraged the spread of educa$on for the masses Shane Douthwaite Gutenberg Press • • • • • • 1398 – 1468 Born in Mainz, Germany Goldsmith, blacksmith, printer and publisher Inventor of the movable type prin$ng press Introduced prin$ng to Europe His Gutenburg Bible was the first major book printed with movable type in the West Shane Douthwaite Johannes Gutenberg • Large increase in prin$ng ac$vi$es across Europe • As early as 1480, there were printers ac$ve in 110 different places in Germany, Italy, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, England, Bohemia and Poland • By the end of the 15th century prin$ng had spread to 270 ci$es in Central, Western and Eastern Europe • Books and bibles were the first things printed and it wasn’t un$l the 16th century when the first newspapers were published Shane Douthwaite The Printing Revolution • The first newspaper in the world, Rela%on aller Fürnemmen und gedenckwürdigen Historien (Account of all dis$nguished and commemorable news), was first published by Johan Carolus in 1605 • The first French newspaper, La Gaze:e, was first published by Théophraste Renaudot in 1631 • The first English Launguage newspaper was the Oxford Gaze:e, s$ll published as the London Gaze:e, was “Published by Authority” by Henry Muddiman in 1665 • The first English daily printed newspaper, The Daily Courant, was first published on 11 March 1702 by Edward Mallet Shane Douthwaite The First Newspapers • The prin$ng press made authorship more profitable • This is when referencing became very important • This new interest in “who wrote what?” sparked interest in educa$on • People wanted to become a somebody and so became writers Shane Douthwaite Circulation of Information • When the industrial revolu$on started, the design of the Gutenberg Press was unchanged but new materials were used to increase produc$vity • Along with the advancement of materials and technology the prin$ng press has been vastly improved throughout the years Shane Douthwaite Evolution of the Press To sum up, the prin$ng press: • Allowed for mass produc$on of the printed word • Brought prin$ng to the West • Encouraged people to beeer themselves • Shaped the way newspapers were produced for hundreds of years Shane Douthwaite Evaluation
