Introduction
All dental practices should cater for nervous patients.
We believe that at Pembroke Dental we go above and
beyond what might be expected of a 21st century
practice. We want all patients who have anxieties to be
as comfortable as it’s possible. We do this by:
Taking trouble over the practice environment
Removing fear of pain
Offering time and consideration
Communicating carefully
All of these approaches are described fully below and
we have added in some testimonials.

The practice
environment
We have done what we can to make both Pembroke
Dental and Granby Clinic welcoming and homely, with
modern furniture in the waiting area and pictures on
the walls. Our colour scheme is bright and cheerful.
The hygienic smell of a clinical environment can be
off-putting to nervous patients so we do what we
can to counteract this. We have luxurious perfumed
sprays that we use regularly.

Removing the
fear of pain
We don’t like our patients to feel frightened of
pain so we offer a variety of coping techniques.
Nitrous oxide is the preferred option as it’s
safe and effective and there is no loss of
consciousness. We offer it to adults and to
children when necessary.
New to the practice this year is The Wand
which is perfect for patients who hate injections.
For those who are very phobic, sedation is on
offer although we prefer to try and encourage
them to cope with just The Wand if we can.

Offering time and consideration
This is the most simple approach we have,
but it’s surprising how effective it can be.
New patients who have been recommended
to us arrive thinking they will have nitrous
oxide or sedation but find themselves coping
with a supportive dentist and dental nurse.
We take a pride in being known as Carlow’s
friendly practice and do our best to always
be warm and welcoming to all patients.
Phobic patients can be challenging but we
know this and do what we can to make
them feel calm and cared for.
If someone is in pain, we will get them into
the practice as soon as possible so they
don’t have to spend too long worrying about
what’s to come. We have appointments we
keep open on a dialy basis so we can do this.
Some nervous patients like to be distracted,
others are the reverse. Whatever helps our
patients cope is encouraged in the practice.
We have headphones and an ipod on offer
for those who like to be distracted or patients
can bring their own entertainment.

Amazing customer service!! My son
had an emergency today and needed a
dentist I brought him to my own dentist to be
told there was no dentist on but I then saw
her leave shortly after! I couldn’t believe it and
dealing with the public you need to be 110%
and I think a 4-year-old in pain needs attention
asap! Pembroke were just amazing, your
receptionist even showed my son the room
he’d be attending when she fitting him in the
following hour! You’ve got yourself a whole
family of new customers and more!
