The lexicon was written and conceived by Suzanne Larochelle, a teacher in the Nursing Department of Cégep Heritage College. The official launch will take place on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at 4 p.m. at L’Auberge (room 163) at Cégep Heritage College, 325 Cité des Jeunes Blvd, in Gatineau. The author will be present along with the editors, her colleagues and her collaborators. Suzanne Larochelle –Teacher in the Nursing Department of Cégep Heritage College and author of the Nursing Lexicon. The Nursing Lexicon: English-French was initially designed to help English-speaking nursing students learn medical terminology in French as part of the Western Quebec Health Care Retention Project Measure II, instigated by McGill University as a means of retaining anglophone nurses in the Outaouais region. The lexicon aims to help nursing care students communicate in either English or French as a second language. The lexicon was developed to reflect the needs of the hospital setting. The terms were selected based on the experiences of nurses and nursing care interns working in their second language. “There is an increasing need for fluency in French and English medical terminology. Patient records and patient care interaction between health care professionals are occurring in both official languages, even at traditionally French-speaking hospitals. It thus becomes very important for all students, regardless of their fluency in English or French, to have a solid knowledge base in medical terminology,” explains Suzanne Larochelle, who initiated the project. “I hope that the lexicon will facilitate the acquisition of nursing-specific terminology for these students and be helpful to all others already in the profession.” A French version is also available, it is entitled: Lexique de soins infirmiers : français – anglais.
