ELYRIA – Helping customers
solve their heating, air conditioning and plumbing needs for
75 years, Geisel Mechanical Services knows what it is talking
about when it comes to energy
efficiency.
It is the go-to source for those
looking to reduce their water
usage, save money on their electric bill or cool their home for
less. But recently, the local business decided to turn the tables
on itself.
President Andy Culberson
said the company had an energy
audit conducted on every room,
toilet and light fixture and
learned that it could do a lot
more to make the Broad Street
facility more efficient.
That was three years ago.
Today, Geisel is being commended for those efforts by the
Council of Smaller Enterprises,
which put a challenge out to
area small businesses to see
what kind of energy efficiency
changes they could make in
their own businesses. Under
terms of the challenge, businesses were encouraged to submit details of energy-efficient
projects they’ve implemented
over the last year. All entries were
judged by a panel of energy efficient experts.
Geisel’s was judged against
COSE members from Ashtabula,
Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain,
Medina, Portage and Summit
counties. It won in the goods
and services category and
received a $2,500 cash prize.
COSE representatives presented Geisel with a check
Wednesday morning.
“Being energy efficient in your
business is becoming more and
more of a priority for small businesses and these winners exemplify forward thinkers that are
ahead of the curve in this area,”
said Steve Millard, president and
executive director of COSE.

REVEALTHE REALYOU
Geisel upgraded its lighting,
HVAC systems, air compressors,
motors and roofing. It also cut
electric consumption by 30 percent and its natural gas usage by
45 percent.
“It feels good to get recognized
for doing something we have
been preaching for 40 years,”
Culberson said. “It’s always a lot
more credible when you have
actually done the same things
you have recommended your
customers should do. It adds
creditability to our mission.”
All of the improvements were
not done at one time. Culberson
said replacements were done in
a systematic approach, with him
identifying the energy hogs in
the building, fixing them and
then working backward.
It is the same approach residents and other business owners
should use when tackling similar
improves in their homes and
businesses, he said.

ACTION WEAR
From February 2nd through 8th 2011, poets from
across Ohio and beyond will converge on Jim’s
Coffeehouse and Diner in downtown Elyria, Ohio, for
Snoetry II: A World Record Winter Wordfest, during
which they will share poetry aloud non-stop for 150
hours, smashing the record for longest poetry reading
ever (120 hours) set in 2010 at Prospero’s Books in
Kansas City.
The brainchild of Elyria poets John Burroughs and
Dianne Borsenik, who also host the wildly successful
Lix and Kix Poetry Extravaganza each month at Bela
Dubby Art Gallery in Lakewood, Ohio, the Snoetry
phenomenon debuted in January 2010 as a twelvehour celebration of spoken word arts at the Last
Wordsmith Book Shoppe in North East, Pennsylvania.
That first Snoetry included performances by thirty
dynamic poets from seven states, as well as shorter
“open mic” readings by dozens of other poets.
Burroughs, Borsenik and their Lorain County poetry
colleagues are proud to bring a bigger and better
Snoetry festival sequel to their home turf at Jim’s
Coffeehouse and Diner, 2 Kerstetter Way, in downtown
Elyria. The event will feature performances by dozens
of widely published Ohio poets and their peers from
states as far away as Massachusetts, Florida and
California. Poets from Nepal and the United Kingdom
may join them. Some poets’ performances will be
accompanied by live music. Open mic sessions will be
sprinkled between the featured performances to allow
lesser known voices to be heard. All poets and poetry
lovers are invited to come and share their own (or their
favorite) poems.
Snoetry II will be streamed live across the world on
the internet. It will begin at 5 p.m. on Wednesday
February 2nd and is scheduled to end at 11 p.m. on
Tuesday February 8th. It aims to encourage literacy,
raise awareness and appreciation of the art of poetry,
strengthen the local arts community, bolster its ties
with the community at large, and attract people,
attention, and well-deserved positive publicity to
Lorain County in general and the city of Elyria and its
historic downtown in particular.
A full schedule and more information will be
forthcoming. To sign up to read or volunteer, please
contact Dianne Borsenik ([email protected]) or
John Burroughs. Snoetry II: A World Record Winter
Wordfest is a Lix and Kix Poetry Production, in
association with PoetryElyria, Poets of Lorain County
and the Ohio Poetry Association.
Peace and poetry,
John B. Burroughs
