SCIENCE FAIR
PROJECT
Nice Rice
Kiersten Boyack | Mrs. McNees | Syracuse Jr. High
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
• Do positive and negative words affect rice?
RESEARCH
• I learned….
– To have the experiment work, you need to ensure that all of the water has boiled out of the rice.
– The lids need to be air tight.
– The nice rice, stupid rice, and control need to be at least 6 inches apart.
– The room temperature needs to be constant with all three variables.
– The containers need to be the same shape and size.

HYPOTHESIS
• If you speak nicely to boiled rice then it will stay
white and not grow mold because positive
thoughts and speech produce positive results.
Also negative speech will grow mold and produce
negative results.
PROCEDURE: MATERIALS
• 3 cups of rice
• 6 cups of water
• 3 containers/lids
• Tape
• Marker
• Voice (A nice one and a not nice one.   )
PROCEDURE: STEPS
1. First I boiled 3 cups of rice.
2. Then I labeled 3 containers, nice rice , stupid rice, and control.
3. Next for a week I yelled stupid rice at the container labeled stupid
rice.
4. I talked nicely and said nice rice to the container labeled nice rice.
5. I did nothing to the control.
6. Last I observed.
VARIABLES
• Constants: The rice was all cooked the same. I used the same containers.
The room temperature was the same.
• Controlled variables: Rice in the controlled container. I did not speak at all
to this container during the experiment.
• Independent variable: I spoke nice words to the container label nice rice.
Then I yelled at, and called stupid, the container labeled stupid rice.
• Dependent (measured) variable: After a week of observing and talking and
yelling at the rice, I will see if mold or any other changes happened to the
rice.
DATA/OBSERVATIONS
• After a week of conducting this experiment, I observed that, the nice rice looked
like it did when I put it in the container.
• The stupid rice grew mold, smelled bad and was turning black. (YUCK!)
• Also the control looked like it did when I put it in the container.
PICTURES OF OBSERVATIONS
Speaking nice to rice is good advice!(and people)
PICTURES OF OBSERVATION
Control
PICTURES OF OBSERVATIONS
STUPID RICE
WORDS did that. Not heat. Not cold.
Not mixing, turning, stirring, shaking. Words.
Unkind words.
CONCLUSION
• I learned that if you speak nicely to rice it will not grow mold, and if you
yell and speak unkind to rice it will grow mold. It is important to not only
talk nice to rice, but also to people.
• The problem was, do negative and positive words affect rice? Words do
affect rice both negatively and positively.
• My hypothesis was correct because positive words affected the rice
positively and negative words affected the rice negatively.
