Dear Friend of Angel Foundation,
Emergency Financial
Assistance
Looking back on 2012, I am amazed how far we have
come since our founding just 12 short years ago. We’ve
grown from me working solo at my kitchen table to the
organization we are today: a professional staff of 12,
governed by 17 community leaders, and a dedicated
volunteer force of 400. Together with you, our valued supporters, we reached
a milestone in 2012 by awarding $3 million in emergency financial assistance
to adults with cancer and their families since 2001. I am grateful for and
humbled by your continued support of Angel Foundation.
Like the mosaic design, the families facing cancer who come to us at first
sometimes feel shattered by their experiences. Because of you, we are able
to offer help and hope through Emergency Financial Assistance and Facing
Cancer Together. We provide the resources to help make these families
whole … not the same as before, certainly, but beautiful in a new way, living
with new strength, stability and resilience. Each of their stories is a piece of
our full picture, shaping and guiding our work and our mission every day at
Angel Foundation.
There are more stories to be told, and there is more work to be done. The
stage is now set for even greater success in the year ahead, with new
milestones in sight. My sincere thanks to each and every one of you for your
gifts. Each of you is making a difference in the lives of adults with cancer
and their families.

The Minnesota Charities Review Council’s
Standards of Accountability state that
at least 70% of an organization’s annual
expenses should be for program activity,
with not more than 30% for management,
general and fundraising expenses combined.
In 2012, Angel Foundation exceeded this
standard by directing 75% of our expense
back into programming for the cancer
participants and their families we serve.

2012 ANNUAL REPORT
A cancer diagnosis can pose a
tremendous financial burden.
Treatment costs, inability to work
and possible job loss can lead to
difficult choices — sometimes forcing
a family to choose between paying
the mortgage or pursuing treatment.
Our response is immediate so that
adults with cancer don’t have to
make these choices.
Angel Foundation provides
emergency financial assistance to
adults in active treatment for cancer.
The funds pay for non-medical basic
needs such as food, gas, utilities and
rent or mortgage payments, easing
worry, allowing recipients to reserve
more energy for self care.
Facing Cancer Together
A parental cancer diagnosis
can rattle a family’s foundation,
resulting in fear, uncertainty and
stress. Through our Facing Cancer
Together program, parents with a
cancer diagnosis and their children
receive accurate, age-appropriate
information about cancer and its
effects on the family. Participants
have the opportunity within their
peer groups to ask questions, share
fears and access support.
We believe the family can be
strengthened through the cancer
experience and take these lessons
far into the future. Through Facing
Cancer Together, families receive
the education and support needed
to gain lasting skills that not only
strengthen, but forge resilience in the
whole family.

The Year in Review
Our 2012 Highlights
n Nearly $650,000 in emergency
financial assistance was distributed
to 1,300 adults with cancer and
their families — an increase of 22
percent over the previous year. We
celebrated reaching the $3 million
milestone in providing emergency
financial assistance since 2001.
n Margie’s Fund, a small fund
dedicated to providing emergency
financial assistance up to $200
for extraordinary circumstances,
provided nearly $50,000 to families
— an all-time high.
n The stage was set for a 2013
goal of providing nearly $1 million
in emergency financial assistance to
adults with cancer and their families.
Plans assume an increase to $700
for each maximum grant as well as
meeting the anticipated 20 percent
increase in requests.
n Angel Foundation staffing grew.
The organization is now led by a
passionate team of 12 professional
staff alongside 17 committed board
members and more than 400
dedicated volunteers.
n More than 110 participants
attended Kids Kamp in August — our
largest group yet. As a direct result
of the experience, 81 percent of
the campers reported feeling more
comfortable communicating with
their family about cancer.
n More than 2,200 donors provided
special gifts during 2012.
n Through the Teen Outreach
program, teen photographers
captured and shared their stories
in images and words. The result:
stirring images that revealed the
impact of a parent’s cancer diagnosis
through the eyes of a teenager.
n Summer Experience, a new
program of Angel Foundation,
brought together 200 parents,
caregivers and children for an
evening of fun, laughter and water
activities.
n Family Topic Nights were
introduced in 2012 through a series
of educational evenings for families
facing cancer.
Angel Foundation staff and volunteers
gathered on Target Field at a Twins game
to mark providing $3 million in emergency
financial assistance since 2001.
n Education and Support Series
went on the road. This vital program
is now offered quarterly in St. Cloud
through the valued partnership with
Coborn Cancer Center.
n Family Consult, the newest Facing
Cancer Together program, was
tested. The program provides an
immediate response to an individual
family’s needs based on four crisis
points along the cancer continuum.
A formal evaluation is now under
way; results will shape the formal
launch.
