Mrs. Hume – Unit 4: The Dystopic Novel Lord of the Flies PLUS the Dystopic Book Group Title – Thematic Project (30 Points) Your final project for Unit 4: Lord of the Flies and the Dystopic Book Group Title is to be unique and creative and allow for your individual perspective and insights to the themes addressed in both LOTF and your Book Group title. Choose ONE theme from the selected list below. Your goal is to interpret this theme creatively in a format that you are interested in exploring (poem, drawing, song, sculpture, etc.) DO NOT RELY ON JUST RETELLING THE STORY!! This project will be presented orally by each student individually and graded at the time of your presentation. While you may choose the medium to communicate this theme, you should include at least three references to symbols, characters and/or moments from BOTH stories in your project. For example, to illustrate the theme of loss of innocense, you could write a scene between Ralph and your main book group character recounting what went wrong. Most importantly, look for alternatives to poster board presentations. You could a) write a poem, b) design a mobile, c) write a scene with Ralph and your book group title character examining their fate, d) write a soliloquy for both characters, e) design a power point collage of images with or without sound, f) write a song, g) create an original drawing or painting, h) perform a reenactment of a scene from both books; the medium possibilities are many. The project will be graded using the rubric below. Include 3 references to explain your theme for BOTH stories. Themes: 1) the need for civilization, 2) innocence and the loss of it, 3) the loss of identity, 4) the need for power, 5) fear of the unknown, 6) blindness and sight, 7) war. Other theme ideas?
