Executive Director’s Message
This past year MBT set a new attendance record and increased almost every key revenue stream. We also took
a big step with the creation of an all new gala format. Our presentation of Steve Martin, Edie Brickell, and the
Steep Canyon Rangers was a smashing success and one that led to a significant number of new contributors.
Our Rep productions in the Walton Theatre were the most successful ever. Both Summer and Winter Rep
enjoyed banner years and community involvement continues to grow for these productions. We also
developed and implemented a new program that allows non-profit performing arts organizations the ability
to use the Encore Room absolutely free and we had more than 30 organizations take advantage of this
opportunity.
The year wasn’t without challenges though. The Main Stage production of The Producers came
in significantly over budget on expenses and under projections on ticket revenue, creating a
deficit that impacted our operations the entire year. We also fell short on projected upper
level memberships and ended the year with a net shortfall of 5.3% of our total operating
budget. Luckily, the Theatre has significant cash reserves and still maintains a healthy
cash position. Looking forward, we’ve already taken steps to adjust and regain our
momentum.
It is a pleasure and an honor for me to serve as Executive Director. I’m
humbled to see the staggering growth that we’ve achieved over the
years and I am very proud of the high quality, experienced
and professional staff that has been assembled to make
the Mount Baker Theatre a regional leader in the
performing arts in the Northwest.

Nearly every revenue stream increased this year, but ticket sales
and revenue from our Gala (see special events) were the two
big growth areas. Our growing reputation has made it possible
for us to secure major performers like Steve Martin and John
Legend to perform on the Main Stage.

Events
Note the significant growth in small space rentals due to our
new service of providing local not-for-profit performing arts
organizations use of the Encore Room free of charge. This is a
key service for these organizations. Now, organizations like
Whatcom Symphony Orchestra and the Festival of Music
have a place for board meetings. Organizations like the Jazz
Project and the UpFront Theatre have a performance space
that is perfect for their performance and rehearsal needs.

Attendance
A new record! In combined attendance, this was the best year
ever. Nearly 108,000 patrons came through our doors to enjoy
performances, events, workshops, and lectures.

Expenses were up dramatically for shows we presented this year,
largely caused by the MBT Rep production of The Producers
and by some of the big-name headliners we booked. Overhead
expenses also increased substantially with the creation of
several new development staff positions. These changes led
to a net negative that equaled 5.3% of our total operational
budget.

Illumination Gala ~ Dinner and Auction
Steve Martin, Edie Brickell, and the Steep Canyon Rangers performed to a
sold-out crowd of fans but not before the Illumination Gala turned heads as
Bellingham’s premier fundraising event! 300 people enjoyed a very exclusive
black tie event just across the street in a pavilion that magically appeared for
this one night occasion.
This was an incredible evening culminating with a $50,000 challenge
from John and Loi Walton that was matched by more than $65,000. All
totaled this evening grossed over $350,000 to support MBT’s work.

Community Spaces
Mount Baker Theatre has for many years rented both the Walton Theatre and Encore Room venues for performances, meetings, parties, and
other gatherings. Beginning this season, our Board of Directors approved and encouraged offering the Encore Room free of charge to local
not-for-profit organizations (with emphasis on performing arts organizations). This new focus for our Community Spaces serves to bring lots
of new people into the theatre, as well as support the growth of other local not-for-profit groups in our community.

MBT Rep
MBT Rep programs continue to increase in popularity and recognition. But this
year expenses outstripped income in a significant way. As we look to next year
the Board remains committed to supporting these productions because Rep has
so many potential upsides. Ultimately MBT Rep is seen as a new way to engage
more people in MBT activities. From set construction, to painting, to acting
and marketing, volunteers have found lots of new ways to get involved and
additional employment opportunities are created. Producing professional,
quality productions continues to expand our reputation as a top notch
regional performing arts center. We simply need to work through the
growing pains, find additional revenue streams and continue to build on
our successes to make Rep
sustainable for the long-run.
