A)'COURSE'OBJECTIVES'
By!the!conclusion!of!the!course,!orators!demonstrate!advanced!
persuasive!skillsets!in!the!delivery!of!his/her!own!TED!Talk.!The!main!
focus!of!the!course!will!be!for!orators!to!learn!the!persuasion!skills!and!
rhetorical!devices!necessary!to!participate!in!advanced!competitive!
public!speaking!events.!!

This!course!is!recommended!before!enrollment!in!the!Elite!Debate!
League.!

B)'ORGANIZATION'
Persuasive!Speaking!for!Debaters!is!generally!suitable!for!8th!and!9th!
graders!who!possess!an!advanced!level!of!competence!in!debate!and!
have!completed!the!Advanced!Debate!course.!This!is!a!2\hour!and!15\
minute!seminar\style!course!that!meets!once!per!week.!

C)'LEARNING'METHODOLOGY''
All!classes!will!be!conducted!through!our!three\step!process:!Active,!
Interactive,!and!Reflective!Learning.!!

1. Active:'Students!first!encounter!new!concepts!on!our!Online!
Learning!Center,!where!they!actively!engage!in!guided!independent!
learning!experiences,!including!original!training!videos!and!
multimedia!activities.'

2. Interactive:'During!practices,!students!collaborate!with!small!
groups!of!peers!to!interactively!develop!new!skills!and!receive!direct!
feedback!from!coaches.!
'
3. Reflective:'After!each!practice,!learners!compose!written!reflections!
to!assess!performance!and!progress,!highlighting!individual!
strengths!and!target!improvement!areas.'!

D)'REQUIRED'PREPARATION'
The!coaches!will!provide!all!required!materials!through!the!Online!
LearningCenter,!including!training!videos,!quizzes,!research!packets,!
data!banks,!and!other!relevant!items.!!
!
Each!student!must!bring!with!them!a!notebook!with!paper#as#well#as#a#
writing#utensil!to!every!practice!session.!!
!
Outside!of!class,!computers!will!be!needed!in!order!to!complete!
required!assignments!on!the!Online!LearningCenter.!Students!are!highly!
encouraged!to!print!out!their!assignments!and!bring!them!to!the!
practice!sessions.!There!may!be!some!instances!in!which!they!are!
needed!in!class,!but!they!are!not!permitted!during!practices!unless!
otherwise!noted.!

E)'EVALUATION'
In!addition!to!results!from!assessments!on!the!LearningLeaders!Online!
LearningCenter,!all!parents!and!families!of!students!will!be!invited!to!a!
parent/coach!conference!some!time!in!the!middle!of!the!course.!During!
this!meeting,!coaches!will!provide!detailed!feedback!and!updates!on!a!
student’s!individual!progress!and!performance.!
!
By!the!end!of!each!semester,!students!will!have!completed!a!Portfolio!
document!that!will!include!samples!of!both!online!and!offline!work.!

F)'FLEXIBLE'PRACTICE'SCHEDULING'/'MAKE'UP'PRACTICES'
In!the!event!that!a!student!is!not!able!to!attend!a!practice!session,!
he/she!is!still!able!to!access!that!week’s!content!online,!so!he/she!will!
not!miss!important!information!from!that!practice.!!
!
As!each!course!has!multiple!meetings!during!the!week,!students!are!able!
to!attend!Flex!Practices,!meaning!that!they!are!able!to!attend!the!same!
level!practice!during!another!day!of!the!week.!!LearningLeaders!
requests!that!the!student!or!parent!notifies!the!coach!which!Flex!
Practice!he/she!will!attend!ahead!of!time,!so!coaches!may!prepare!
accordingly.!!!

G)'OFFICE'HOURS''
In!the!event!that!students!are!unable!to!attend!a!Flex!Practice,!coaches!
will!be!available!during!regularly!scheduled!Office!Hours!as!listed!on!the!
syllabus.!Students!must!make!appointments!on!the!Online!
LearningCenter!and!identify!which!class’s!content!they!would!like!to!
make!up!at!least!72!hours!in!advance.!Online!Learning!Center!
assignments!should!be!completed!prior!to!the!Office!Hours!session.!

H)'ABSENTEE'POLICY'
In!the!event!of!an!absence,!coaches!will!be!available!during!Office!Hours,!
as!listed!on!the!course!schedule.!!Coaches!cannot!guarantee!one\on\one!
make\up!classes!but!students!are!absolutely!encouraged!to!come!
regularly!to!office!hours!with!questions!or!to!review!material.!!

I)'CODE'OF'CONDUCT'
It!is!expected!that!students!will!conduct!themselves!in!a!manner!that!is!
respectful!of!their!fellow!students,!their!coach,!their!parents,!and!
anyone!else!present.!!If!a!student!uses!inappropriate!language!or!causes!
another!person!any!physical!or!emotional!harm,!they!may!be!asked!to!
leave!the!practice!immediately.!!This!decision!will!be!at!the!discretion!of!
the!coach.!!In!this!case,!no!refunds!will!be!given.!

J)'EMERGENCY'PROCEDURES'
In!the!event!of!an!emergency,!all!students!will!accompany!their!coach!to!
the!nearest!place!of!safety,!whereupon!the!coach!will!contact!the!
