Welcome to the 2016 National Dog Show Presented by
Purina.® Thank you for joining us for this very special event
this year as we celebrate our 15th Anniversary.
Thank you to our host and partner, the Kennel Club of
Philadelphia, which presented its very first dog show here
in the Delaware Valley in 1879. The show became an annual
event in 1933 and has been presented continuously ever
since.
Thanksgiving is a time for families and friends, including
our treasured family pets. The National Dog Show Presented
by Purina® has become a Thanksgiving Day tradition as
families across the country gather to watch “the dogs.” The
show airs on NBC on Thanksgiving Day in all U.S. time zones
following the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The official program cover artwork was created by
artist Chris Duke. It is drawn in the classic cover style of
Time Magazine’s Nobel Prize winners. It features GCH
CH Cragsmoor Good Time Charlie, the elegant and spirited
Skye Terrier who is our 2015 Best In Show winner, along
with his handler Larry Cornelius.
This program is your front row seat and behind the scenes
window to the National Dog Show Presented by Purina®.
You’ll find background information on the dog breeds, the
canine athletic activities and other details that will help you
enjoy the full experience of the National Dog Show. Please

Johnny & Tara Agree: Their Dogs Are The Best
The Olympic figure skating royalty
duo of Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir
have become prominent television
personalities whose credits include the
Kentucky Derby, the Super Bowl and now
for the second year in a row, The National
Dog Show Presented by Purina®.
A member of the U.S. Figure Skating
Hall of Fame, Lipinski became the
youngest individual gold medalist in
Winter Olympic history capturing the gold medal in Nagano
at the age of 15. During his distinguished 16-year career,
Weir won three consecutive U.S. National Championship
titles (2004-2006) and was the bronze medalist at the World
Championships in 2008.
Avid dog lovers and media darlings, here they are in select

Q: What makes your dog the light of
your life?
Johnny: “There’s nothing like owning
a dog – they always love you no matter
if you’re good or bad. I have a Japanese
Chin named Tema. He is my little prince
and is always there wagging his tail
when I get home. He brings so much
joy to my life, and I’m so thankful for his
companionship.
Tara: “My dog’s name is Dublin. He’s a hugger. Seriously.
I know in some ways it’s a bad habit, but Dublin just loves
to wrap his paws around people and snuggle them face-toface.”
Q: So why is your dog your best friend?
Tara: “When I come back from traveling or just have had a
DAY, Dublin’s there to give me the most unconditional love.
I could just look at that puppy face forever.”
Watching The National Dog Show... Like a Pro
1. How to Watch the National Dog Show. Use this program
as your on-site guide. There is a one page flyer describing all
the locations and benched areas for specific breeds in the
show, as well as the breed rings where competition takes
place. Additional information is available in Hall A, at the
Kennel Club of Philadelphia’s desk. All of these locations are
open to the public.
2. Can I pet the dogs? Check with the dog’s owner/handler
in the benching area before approaching or petting the dog.
They are being groomed and getting ready to show in some
cases. Please don’t hesitate to talk to the handlers and ask
questions.
3. What are the judges doing when they examine the
dogs in the ring? The judges in this competition are looking
for the dog that best exemplifies what is known as the breed
standard. Each judge is looking at each individual canine’s
physical attributes and comparing those with that judge’s
knowledge of the breed’s written standard based on bone
structure, shape, movement, temperament and condition.
4. Why do the dogs trot during the competitions? The
handlers trot with the dogs to show their movement and the
dog’s special conformation features.
5. When is “Best In Show?” The Best In Show competition
begins at 5:00 p.m. in Hall C, both Saturday and Sunday. This
is the ‘highlight’ of the day’s competitions, so please plan
your afternoon so that you can attend.

6. What other activities can I see during the Dog Show
Weekend? Hall D is the center of canine sports and dog entertainment on Saturday and Sunday. Watch the Incredible
Diving Dog competition, agility, freestyle flying disc and other popular canine sports. Learn to train and handle your dog
from our experts. See schedule in the program for days and
times. Visit the many booths that will be on-site during the
show to see all the new innovations for you and your pets.

8. How do I learn about responsible pet ownership?
Talk to the owners and handlers of the dogs. They are experts on caring for their dogs, who incidentally are not
only ‘show dogs’ but family pets as well. You can also visit

Herding Group - Pumi
Terrier Group - American Hairless Terrier
The Sloughi (SLOO-ghee) is known
for its graceful, noble, and reserved
nature. The Sloughi is mediumlarge, shorthaired breed of dog
with an athletic build. It was
developed in North Africa for
hunting game, and has since been
treasured in North Africa for its
hunting skills, including superb
endurance and speed. With a
melancholic expression, the Sloughi
has a quiet loyalty to its owner that
does not easily waver. They are quiet
and calm indoors, cautious with
strangers, and get along with other
animals and children if raised with
them.
The Pumi (Pu-MI) is a medium-sized,
agile Hungarian herding breed. They
are energetic, lively, and ready to
work. They are versatile stock dogs,
equally adept at gathering, driving
and keeping the stock under control.
The breed has a long head with semierect ears, a whimsical expression
and a tail that forms a circle over the
back. The coat (black, white, gray,
or shades of fawn from pale cream
to red) is a combination of wavy and
curly hair, forming corkscrews or
curls all over the body, and is never
smooth or corded.
The American Hairless Terrier
(AHT) is an energetic, intelligent
breed that originated from a mixed
breed of terriers called Feists,
brought over to North America
from Europe in the 18th century.
A more direct ancestor of the AHT
is the Rat Terrier, a mixture of the
Feist, Beagle, Italian Greyhound,
and Miniature Pinscher. The AHT
originated in 1972, when one
puppy out of a litter of Rat Terriers
was born hairless. This breed is
known for being hypoallergenic,
making it a suitable companion
for those with allergies. As a working
breed, the AHT has a strong hunting
instinct and excels in many sports
and activities, making them good
watchdogs and giving them the
temperament to enjoy participating
in games.

Judging
THE NATIONAL DOG SHOW PRESENTED BY PURINA®
is an open, benched, all-breed show. The dogs are “benched”
during the day in order to allow you, the public, to view
and visit with 202 AKC recognized breeds and varieties that
may be competing. There are only three benched shows
held annually in the United States: Westminster KC, (Kennel
Club) Philadelphia KC, and Golden Gate KC. The judges
examine the dogs and place them according to how closely
each dog compares with the judge’s mental image of the
perfect dog as described in the breed’s official standard.
The main consideration is the dog’s conformation or overall
appearance, temperament, structure and movement. The
judges are looking for characteristics that allow the dog to
perform the function for which his or her breed was bred.
EARNING POINTS
A dog will begin his show career by competing to become a
“champion.” To earn an AKC Championship title (and to be
able to place Ch. in front of his/her name) the dog needs to
win 15 points at AKC shows. Points are earned by defeating
other dogs of the same sex and breed in classes held
specifically for non-champions. Points used to determine

national rankings are recorded by the AKC and based on
the number of dogs defeated. For each dog defeated at a
dog show, the other dog gets one all-breed point. The top
dogs in the country easily have more than 50,000 points in
a given year.
BEST IN BREED
In order to win “Best In Show” a dog must first be judged
the best of many dogs of its same breed competing in the
show. Some breeds have more than 100 dogs entered. The
winner of the breed moves on to the Group judging.

FIRST IN GROUP
Each of the 202 AKC registered breeds and varieties are
assigned to one of seven groups (Sporting, Hound, Working,
Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding) representing
characteristics and functions for which the breeds were
originally bred. By winning the Group competition, that
dog joins an elite group of winners of the seven group
competitions that go on to compete for the ultimate “Best
In Show” award, the coveted gold and blue ribbon, and to
become winner of The National Dog Show Presented by
Purina®®.

stars of this show.
It’s USA Network’s primetime debut of the inaugural
“Beverly Hills Dog Show Presented by Purina®” at 8 p.m.
ET/PT on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017.
Fittingly, the seven Best In Show finalists will walk a
glitzy fashion show-esque runway in the finals of the
competition, making it unlike any dog show ever before.
“Best In Show” will be the culmination of a delightful twohour television presentation featuring personalities from
the world of entertainment helping with a celebration of
dogs. Those celebrated dogs will include more than 1,000
dogs from more than 200 eligible breeds expected for the
competition, the stars’ own dogs, and also other dogs with
interesting and happy stories to share, from Beverly Hills
and from the dog show as well.
Created by NBC Sports Group in a multi-year agreement
with his game show host experience (To Tell the Truth in
2000, and Family Feud from 2006 to 2010), he has an exceptionally thoughtful appreciation for canines. He’s authored
three books about dogs and their impact on our lives. The
most recent, “The Perfect Dog,” has been adapted into a
children’s musical that is now part of National Dog Show
Month in Philadelphia.
“If you have a dog in the room,” O’Hurley relates, “everyone comes and pets the dog. If there’s a dog in an elevator,
everyone is looking at the dog. Whatever the natural behavior of the dog is, everyone is going, awww. They calm
us down; they round the edges in our lives. They take the
brittleness out of things. That’s what dogs do.
“If you’re around 2,000 of them, they don’t care if they
win. Everybody else seems to be happy so they’re happy.
And they’re appreciated, and they know it, and there’s a
sense of energy that they know that something important
is going on. All of those things lead to just a great environment for everybody.
“It is the happiest day of the year. It’s as simple as that.”
The well-traveled host not only says nothing but nice
things about visiting Philadelphia, he can do so without
even dropping the name of an iconic sandwich shop.
“My favorite thing about Philly is the authenticity of the
history there. The actual documents, walking around and
actually being in arm’s reach from some of the most important legislation that was ever done in this country, the
Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.
“I did the musical 1776 many times, and I think that every
time I pass that building, that they all stood in and sat in,
and how sweaty that must have been and how miserable
they must have been, and yet to put their names on any
one of those documents was basically signing a lynching
mob. I think of that every time I pass that building…. My
goodness, the courage they had to do what they did.
“On top of that, I love walking up and down the streets
and seeing the preservation of the areas. I love staying
in some of the little boutique hotels. We love Oaks too,
mostly because my wife refers to Neiman Marcus as the
mothership out there in the King of Prussia Mall, which is
the best place in the world to shop.”
You don’t have to be a Seinfeld fan or a National Dog
Show Presented by Purina® viewer to have seen John
O’Hurley’s visage frequently.
He is a theater star who has played King Arthur in Monty
Python’s Spam-A-Lot and currently still plays Billy Flynn in
the long running musical Chicago. On stage, he possesses
a fine singing voice. Tom Williams of Chicago Critic opined
it best: “John O’Hurley brings a big voice and a commanding presence.”
He is a self-taught classical pianist who has released several acclaimed CDs, and is now starring in his own creation
called A Man With Standards. “It’s my one-man show of the
music of the period when I grew up, a period of time when
men had standards. It’s basically piano, and I expanded it
all the way up to a full orchestra. It’s fun. I have all these
melodies in my head, I’ve got to get rid of them somehow.
It’s a dangerous place up there.”
He has ballroom dancing skills too; he made it to the finals of the first season of Dancing With The Stars, and won
a dance-off following a hotly disputed (to say the least)
loss in the original final.

who #1-6 are, his answer is no one specific. Just that there
are probably only six people in the world having a better

Dr. Cindy Otto, whose work at Ground Zero following the
Sept. 11 terrorist attacks inspired her founding of the Penn
Vet Working Dog Center, is the recipient of the 2016 Kennel
Club of Philadelphia “Dogs’ Best Friend Award.”
A tenured associate professor of critical care at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr.
Otto is the sixth winner of the award, and will direct the resulting Kennel Club of Philadelphia (KCP) $5,000 donation
to the nationally renowned Penn Vet Working Dog Center
(WDC). Opened on September 11, 2012, the WDC is the nation’s premier research, training, and educational facility
dedicated to producing an elite group of detection dogs for
public safety and public health (www.PennVetWDC.org).
Among the skills for which canines are trained at the WDC
are Diabetes Alert, Ovarian Cancer Detection, Narcotics Detection, Explosives Detection, Law Enforcement, and Urban
Search & Rescue. Dr. Otto and WDC dogs will demonstrate
some of those skills in the National Dog Show stadium

In addition to 9/11, Dr. Otto was deployed following Hurricane Floyd in 1999 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. She is
one of America’s foremost authorities on search & rescue

“The Perfect Dog” tribute with my son, Will, in 2011. It
represented what we love most about our dogs ... and our
children and our children with our dogs. Secondly, the Irish
Setter, Clooney, winning Best in Show in 2010, ending 10
years of bickering with David Frei over what I consider to
be the superlative attributes of the breed as show dogs.
(That stunning accomplishment made me consider early
retirement, satisfied with being right once in my life.)
What is the question you are most frequently asked
about working The National Dog Show on NBC?
DF: “Is it really like the movie, ‘Best in Show’?” My answer
is yes. The movie did not make fun of the dogs, it did not
make fun of the sport, but it did make fun of our characters.
And as I say, we are a target rich environment when it
comes to characters, just like any other organized activity.
In those characters in the movie, I saw a lot of people that I
recognized and saw a couple of scenes that were from my
own dog show experiences. I think most of us take it as a
compliment to be the object of satire of such a talented
group of actors. I think about it and smile.
MC: I’m asked all the time a simple question: “How much
fun is it to work on the dog show?” People think I’ve got
a cool job traveling and going to major events like the
Olympics and major tennis tournaments and they’re right.
I think I give them the answer they’re looking for when I say
that it is far more fun than all the other stuff. I was speaking
at a National Dog Show fundraiser a couple of years ago
and was talking about working the Olympic Games plus
Westminster and The National Dog Show and I said, ‘I have
to tell you that of all the events I work on, in terms of pure
fun, the Olympics gets the bronze.’ It was a room full of dog
lovers, so I got a nice reaction.
JO: Are the owners anything like the parody of the movie

Welcome to the 15th annual
edition of The National Dog
Show Presented by Purina®
and hosted by The Kennel
Club of Philadelphia. This
year’s shows feature the TV debut of an unprecedented
three new AKC breeds: American Hairless Terrier, Pumi
and the Sloughi. We continue to build upon our efforts to
make our show experience entertaining and educational
for all with exciting canine athletic events including The
Purina® ProPlan® Incredible Dog Challenge® diving dog
competition and demonstrations and clinics involving such
subjects as canine health and how kids should interact with
“man’s best friend.” This year’s NDS weekend will feature
a Friday night gala hosted by The Valley Forge Casino
benefiting local canine-oriented causes including the
Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House therapy dog program
and the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).
The Kennel Club of Philadelphia is no newcomer to the
dog show world. Since hosting a major dog event in 1876
at the Centennial Exposition, we’ve been at the forefront
of the purebred dog world. The KCP and its predecessors
have been presenting shows since 1879. Our club predates
the American Kennel Club (AKC), which was organized
at a meeting of the then Philadelphia Kennel Club on
September 17, 1884. We are not only one of America’s
oldest continuing sporting events but our annual National
Dog Show Presented by Purina® TV special is the most
widely watched canine event in the world, capturing 25
million plus viewers a year with its broadcast on NBC at
noon on Thanksgiving Day and an NBC prime time encore
presentation the following Saturday.

WAYNE FERGUSON, today’s show announcer, is President of the Kennel Club of Philadelphia. Wayne has been immersed in the dog world for over 45 years and has bred and
shown top Saint Bernards. Through the years he served as President of the AKC Canine
Health Foundation and Director of the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary
Medicine and Show Chairman of the time honored Morris and Essex Dog Show.
The American Kennel Club: The Kennel Club of Philadelphia’s National Dog Shows are sanctioned by the AKC, the principal registry for purebred dogs
in the United States and the largest registry in the world. Every year, owners register approximately one million dogs with the AKC. The AKC’s Canine
Health Foundation is the world’s largest funder of exclusively canine research, with a mission to develop significant resources for basic and applied
health programs with emphasis on canine genetics to improve the quality of life for dogs and their owners. The AKC and its affiliate, AKC Companion
Animal Recovery, have been crucial in providing long-term care to displaced animals.
