Scholarships Office Grants-in-Aid Information & Conditions Grants in Aid – Information for Applicants Grants-in-Aid (GIA) are travel grants for short research trips overseas. Both the Scholarships Office and Faculties may offer GIAs. Only those GIAs listed in this document will be considered by the Scholarships Office. Eligibility Requirements: Unless otherwise stated in the Conditions of Award, applicants must be enrolled full time in higher degree by research at the University of Sydney, or citizens or permanent residents of Australia. Applicants must intend to depart no later than the end of December of the year of the GIA award. Funding may also be considered for travel undertaken in the year proceeding the award as long as the trip has not received any financial support provided by the University of Sydney previously, including but not limited to Grants in Aid or PRSS. If a GIA is sought by an applicant in consecutive years, it will not be granted for the same research trip. Preference will be given to applicants who have not had support under the GIA scheme previously. A GIA will not be awarded to applicants who have already completed 16 full-time equivalent (FTE) Research Periods of a PhD or eight (8) FTE Research Periods of a Masters. Benefits: The award ranges from between $500 to $2,500. The selection committee determines the value of the award made to successful applicants. Applications for funding to present at or attend conferences only will not be considered for GIA. The Postgraduate Research Support Scheme (PRSS) provides funding for presenting at conferences. You may be covered by the University's travel insurance during your time overseas. Submission Requirements: Please read and complete the GIA application form fully. Incomplete applications submitted or amended after 5pm on the day of application deadline will not be considered. GIA applications should be submitted as two separate PDFs files attached to a single email. Ensure you are using the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. The first PDF should be the application form only. Download to your computer and using the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, complete it and save in the ‘fillable’ format in which it is provided. Handwritten forms will not be accepted. Include all supplementary documents (including travel budget and research proposal) in the second PDF. Forward the ‘Grants In Aid – Referee Request’ form to your referees and liaise with them to ensure that their confidential reports reach the Scholarships Office. Davis Memorial Scholarship Conditions of Award The scholarship was established by the staff of the Department of East Asian Studies in 1988 as a postgraduate award to honour the memory of A.R. Davis, Professor of Oriental Studies from 1954 to 1983, to recognise his contribution to the development of East Asian studies in Australia and to help preserve the tradition of independent study of which he was an exemplary practitioner. The scholarship is awarded under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. The object of the scholarship is to assist postgraduate students undertaking research in either Chinese or Japanese. The scholarship is open to students enrolled in a postgraduate research degree in Chinese or Japanese studies. The scholarship is awarded by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the Committee appointed by the Academic Board to consider applications for travelling scholarships. The Committee takes into account each applicant's academic record and the merit of the proposed program of research. The scholarship may be held in conjunction with any other award and may be in the form of a grant-in-aid or travel grant. Albert Travelling Scholarship in Music Conditions of Award Established in 1970 by the offer of an annual gift of $1250 for twenty years from Alexis Albert on behalf of J. Albert & Son Pty Ltd. The purpose of the gift was to establish a travelling scholarship in music. The scholarship is awarded under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. The scholarship is open to— (a) full-time postgraduate students enrolled in Music for whom it is academically desirable to spend time outside Australia as part of their candidature, and (b) graduates of the University who proceed outside Australia to undertake research work in music and who are unable to meet the total costs from other funds, which may include travelling scholarships or travel grants. The scholarship shall be awarded by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the committee appointed by the Academic Board to consider applications for travelling scholarships. The committee shall take into account each applicant’s academic record and the merit of the proposed program of study or research. Scholarships Office – GIA Information & Conditions (rev. 14-7-16) Scholarships Office Grants-in-Aid Information & Conditions Dorothy Cameron Fellowship Conditions of Award Established in 1994 by donations from Dorothy and Roy Cameron of Canberra with the purpose of encouraging research into the role of women in prehistoric societies. Awarded under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. The award shall be known as the Dorothy Cameron Fellowship. Awards to be made to assist persons who wish to conduct research into the role of women in the culture, rituals and belief systems in prehistoric societies from the Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age with exceptions being made for pockets of societies in latter periods which were unaffected by subsequent cultural influences. Awards will be made on the basis of the strength and quality of the proposed research: theoretically innovative and interdisciplinary proposals are particularly encouraged. Preference will be given to meritorious proposals from women applicants. The Committee, having regard to the nature of the proposals received and the funds available, may make one, two or three awards in any one year and may decline to make an award if it considers that there are no proposals of sufficient merit. The Committee may make further awards to a previous applicant. Applicants are not required to be studying for a degree or diploma or to hold formal qualifications. The scholarship shall be awarded by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the committee appointed by the Academic Board to consider applications for travelling scholarships. Awards of up to $5,000 may be made. Denison Miller Postgraduate Memorial Travelling Scholarship Conditions of Award The scholarship, which is to promote the graduate study of economics, was founded in 1924 by a gift of about £1500 from the executive committee of the Denison Miller Memorial Fund established in memory of Sir Denison Miller, the first Governor of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. The scholarship is awarded under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. The scholarship shall be known as the Denison Miller Postgraduate Memorial Travelling Scholarship. The scholarship shall be open to graduates of the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Sydney who propose to continue their studies or research in economics at an institution abroad approved by the Faculty. The award shall be made by the Academic Board on the recommendation of a committee appointed by the Faculty of Economics and Business, and provided that the candidate’s work is of sufficient merit. The scholarship may be held in conjunction with any other award and may be in the form of a supplementary living allowance or grant-in-aid. Scholarships Office – GIA Information & Conditions (rev. 14-7-16) Scholarships Office Grants-in-Aid Information & Conditions Farrington-Thorpe Scholarship Conditions of Award Established in 1983 by a bequest from Mrs Harriet Daisy Finlayson who died in 1933. The purpose of the bequest, which was subject to certain life interests, was to establish a postgraduate scholarship in history, tenable outside Australia, as a memorial to Mrs Finalyson’s mother, Mrs Farrington-Thorpe. The scholarship is awarded under the following conditions: 1. The name of the scholarship shall be the Farrington-Thorpe Scholarship. 2. The scholarship is open to— (a) full-time postgraduate students currently enrolled in the University of Sydney in the Department of History for whom it is academically desirable to spend time outside Australia as part of their candidature; and (b) graduates of the University of Sydney who proceed outside Australia to undertake research work in history and who are unable to meet the total costs from other funds, which may include travelling scholarships or travel grants. 3. The scholarship shall be awarded by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the Committee comprising the Head of the Department of History and two other members of the Department of History, nominated by the Head of the Department. 4. The committee shall take into account each applicant’s academic record and the merit of the proposed program of study or research. 5. The scholarship may be held in conjunction with any other award and may be in the form of a supplementary living allowance or grant-in-aid. 6. The value of the award shall be determined by the committee. John Frazer Travelling Scholarship Conditions of Award The scholarship was established in 1890 by a bequest of £2000 from the Honourable John Frazer, MLC. It had been the intention of the donor that the bequest be used to found a chair in ancient and modern history. However, as the bequest was insufficient to found a chair, Mrs Frazer and the trustees of the estate directed that the bequest be used to found a scholarship in history. This use of the bequest is in accordance with the general tenor of the will. The scholarship is now awarded under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4 5. 6. The scholarship shall be known as the John Frazer Travelling Scholarship. The scholarship may only be awarded to a full-time candidate for a higher degree in the Department of History. Scholarships Office – GIA Information & Conditions (rev. 14-7-16) Scholarships Office Grants-in-Aid Information & Conditions Frank Coaldrake Scholarship Conditions of Award Established in 1981 by the donation of the capital of the Frank Coaldrake Memorial Fund for the purpose of establishing a scholarship in memory of the Reverend Canon Frank William Coaldrake, who was archbishopelect of Brisbane but who died before being consecrated as archbishop. The object of the scholarship is to encourage studies on any topic pertinent to countries in East Asia and Melanesia, a geographical area in which the Reverend Canon Frank Coaldrake had a strong personal interest. He had a particular interest in Japan. The scholarship is awarded under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. The scholarship shall be known as the Frank Coaldrake Scholarship. The scholarship may be awarded to a third or fourth year undergraduate or to a postgraduate student of the University of Sydney who is enrolled for a degree or diploma in the Faculties of Arts, Economics and Business or Law. The scholarship shall be awarded by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the committee appointed by the Academic Board to consider applications for travelling scholarships. The committee shall take into account each applicant’s academic record and the merit of the proposed program of study or research. The scholarship may be held in conjunction with any other award and may be in the form of a supplementary living allowance, a travel grant or grant-in-aid. The value of the award shall be determined by the committee. H.S. Carslaw Memorial Scholarship Conditions of Award Established in 1982 after a bequest of £2000 in 1955 from Professor H.S. Carslaw, for the purpose of strengthening the educational connection between the University of Sydney and Emmanuel College within the University of Cambridge. 1. The name of the scholarship shall be the H.S. Carslaw Memorial Scholarship. 2. The object of the scholarship is to assist travel to Emmanuel College, within the University of Cambridge, for the purposes of research. 3. The scholarship is open to: (a) full-time postgraduate students currently enrolled in the University of Sydney for whom it is academically desirable to spend time outside Australia as part of their candidature; and (b) graduates of the University of Sydney who proceed outside Australia to undertake research work and who are unable to meet their total costs from other funds, which may include travelling scholarships or travel grants. 4. Holders of the scholarship will be required to carry out studies or research at Cambridge University, as a member of Emmanuel College. 5. The maximum amount of the scholarship shall be $2500. There may be more than one award each year. 6. The scholarship shall be awarded by the Academic Board on the recommendation of a committee appointed by the Academic Board to consider travelling scholarships Scholarships Office – GIA Information & Conditions (rev. 14-7-16) Scholarships Office Grants-in-Aid Information & Conditions Kath O’Neil Scholarship Conditions of Award Founded in memory of Kath O’Neil in 1996 by the Chancellor's Committee in the sum of $50000, being a donation from the Committee and the proceeds from a public subscription. Kath O’Neil was a graduate of the Faculty of Arts, a long standing member of the University community and the first woman to be made an Honorary Fellow of the University. She was involved in establishing the Chancellor’s Committee, and had a strong interest in psychology. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. The name of the award shall be the Kath O’Neil Scholarship. The scholarship shall be in the form of a grant-in-aid, to assist a student enrolled full-time in a higher degree in one of the Faculties of Arts or Education, the Conservatorium of Music, Sydney College of the Arts or the Department of Psychology, to travel overseas to undertake research relevant to his or her candidature. The travel must not be for the sole purpose of attending a conference, although attendance at conferences may be included in the time spent overseas. Applicants must have achieved a high standard of academic proficiency and otherwise contributed to the life of the University and will be required to present referees’ reports to this effect. The scholarship shall be awarded by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the committee appointed by the Academic Board to consider travelling scholarships. The scholarship holder shall be invited to present an oral report to the Chancellor’s Committee at its general meeting outlining the results and benefits of the travel on return to Australia. The scholarship shall be awarded annually, provided that there are candidates of sufficient merit. The scholarship shall not be awarded more than once to the same person. The scholarship may be held in conjunction with any other award. The value of the award shall be determined by the committee. There may be more than one award made each year. Waldock Scholarship Conditions of Award Established in 1976 by the amalgamation of funds from three sources: 1. 2. 3. Miss Nancy Karnaghan, sister of Kathleen Margaret Karnaghan, in 1973 offered to donate a sum of money to establish a scholarship in the Department of English in the University in memory of her sister. Frederick Alexander Elgar who died in 1966 bequeathed a portion of his residuary estate to the Department of English in the University for the purpose of establishing scholarships and prizes. The committee for raising funds to establish a memorial to Professor A.J.A. Waldock in 1959 made a donation to the University to institute the Waldock Memorial Lectures. The scholarship is awarded under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. The name of the scholarship shall be the Kathleen Margaret Karnaghan, F.A. Elgar and A.J.A. Waldock Scholarship. The scholarship shall be in the form of a grant-in-aid to assist a scholar who wishes to undertake research work overseas. The scholarship shall be awarded to a graduate in the Faculty of Arts with honours in English who, except in special circumstances, is of not more than five years’ standing from the award of a first degree. The scholarship shall be awarded by the Academic Board on the recommendation of a committee consisting of the Chair of the Academic Board, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and the Professors in the Department of English. The scholarship shall be available annually, provided there is a candidate of sufficient merit. The value of the award shall be determined by the committee. The conditions of award may be varied from time to time as the Academic Board thinks fit. Scholarships Office – GIA Information & Conditions (rev. 14-7-16) Scholarships Office Grants-in-Aid Information & Conditions Sydney Moss Scholarship Conditions of Award Under the will of the late Sydney Moss Esq., the sum of $13 000 was bequeathed to the University of Sydney for the establishment of a scholarship for the subject of music. In 1953 the following conditions of award for the Sydney Moss Scholarship were approved: 1. 2. 3. 4 5. 6. The name of the scholarship shall be the Sydney Moss Scholarship. The object of the scholarship is to enable a person who possesses natural genuine musical talent, instrumental, vocal or as a composer, and who has not the means of enjoying the advantages of a continental musical education at an approved school of music to proceed overseas for this purpose. The value of each scholarship shall be determined by the committee. A candidate for the scholarship must have been born in New South Wales, and must be a graduate of the Faculty of Arts with honours in music, or a Bachelor of Music (honours), of not more than five years’ standing from graduation. The scholarship shall be awarded by the Senate Each candidate for the scholarship must submit a proposed course of study and may be required to sit for a special examination. Kenneth Firth Vickery Scholarship Conditions of Award Established in 1966 by a bequest of $2000 from Dr Kenneth Firth Vickery to establish a scholarship in the field of cancer research. Dr Vickery graduated MB ChM in 1911 and DPH in 1920 in the University of Sydney. The scholarship shall be awarded under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. The name of the scholarship shall be the Kenneth Firth Vickery Scholarship. The object of the scholarship is to promote research in the field of cancer. The scholarship may be awarded to full-time postgraduate students enrolled in the University of Sydney who are undertaking cancer research. The scholarship shall be awarded on the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. The scholarship may be held in conjunction with any other postgraduate award and may be in the form of a supplementary living allowance, a travel grant or a grant-in-aid. Scholarships Office – GIA Information & Conditions (rev. 14-7-16) Scholarships Office Grants-in-Aid Information & Conditions Thomas Henry Coulson Scholarship Conditions of Award Founded in 1916 by a gift of £1000 from the executors of the will of Miss Mary Jane Coulson, in memory of her brother. The scholarship may be awarded under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. The name of the award shall be the Thomas Henry Coulson Scholarship. The scholarship shall be open to any postgraduate candidate enrolled in the Department of English at the University of Sydney to assist the candidate to undertake research overseas. The scholarships shall be awarded by the committee of the Academic Board appointed to consider applications for postgraduate awards to a student nominated by the Head of the Department of English in consultation with the departmental board or appropriate departmental committee. Account shall be taken of each applicant’s academic record and the merit of the proposed program of research. The scholarship shall be awarded annually provided there is a candidate whose work is of sufficient merit. James Kentley Memorial Scholarship Conditions of Award Established by the Senate in 1993 using income from the James Kentley Memorial Fund established in 1980. The Scholarships are offered in the form of grants-in-aid under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. The name of the scholarship shall be the James Kentley Memorial Scholarships The Scholarship shall be in the form of a grant-in-aid to assist full-time or part-time students enrolled for a postgraduate research degree at the University of Sydney to travel overseas to undertake research relevant to his or her candidature. The Scholarships are open to graduates of any tertiary institution regardless of when qualified for the degree. The other Senate Regulations relating the award of travelling scholarships shall apply. The Scholarship shall be awarded by the Postgraduate Awards Selection Committee. The Scholarship shall be awarded annually, provided that there are candidates of sufficient merit. The value of the award shall be determined by the committee. Scholarships Office – GIA Information & Conditions (rev. 14-7-16) Scholarships Office Grants-in-Aid Information & Conditions Baillieu Research Scholarship Conditions of Award Established in 1954 under the provisions of the Repatriation Fund (Baillieu Gift) Act, 1937, from a portion of the gift originally made by the Messrs Baillieu for assisting permanently and totally incapacitated exservicemen from the 1914-18 World War. The scholarship is awarded under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. The name of the scholarship shall be the Baillieu Research Scholarship. The object of the scholarship is to enable travel outside Australia for the purpose of research. The scholarship is open to: (a) full-time postgraduate students currently enrolled in the University of Sydney for whom it is academically desirable to spend time outside Australia as part of their candidature; and (b) graduates of the University of Sydney who proceed outside Australia to undertake research work and who are unable to meet the total costs from other funds, which may include travelling scholarships or travel grants. Holders of the scholarship will be required to undertake studies or research in some place or places approved by the Academic Board. There may be more than one award each year. The scholarship shall be awarded by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the committee appointed by the Academic Board to consider travelling scholarships. Herbert Johnson Travel Grants Conditions of Award Under the will of Herbert Johnson in 1937, the whole of his estate was bequeathed to his widow for life, and the income from certain portions to be paid to certain beneficiaries for their life, with the remainder upon their respective deaths to the Senate of the University. Mrs Johnson died in 1952 but was predeceased by two of the four successive life tenants, and accordingly half the estate was transferred to the University amounting to £5460. In 1953 the Senate decided that this amount should be used to establish travel grants and that when the whole of the estate is available to the University further consideration will be given to the use of the fund. Travel grants are awarded under the following conditions: 1. The income from the Herbert Johnson Fund is available for payment to graduates of the University of Sydney who proceed overseas to undertake research work and who are unable to meet their total costs from other funds. 2. Grants may be made to graduates where they hold travelling scholarships or other travel grants and shall be made for the purpose of travel to or from Australia or from one place of research to another while overseas or for expenses in connection with their work. The value of the award shall be determined by the committee. 3. Booker, a retired Army Officer of Chadstone, Victoria, to provide scholarships for students at the discretion of the Senate. The scholarships are offered in the form of grants-in-aid under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. The name of the awards shall be the Royston George Booker Scholarships. The scholarships shall be in the form of grants-in-aid to assist any full-time enrolled student of the University to travel overseas to undertake research relevant to his or her candidature. The scholarships shall be awarded by the Postgraduate Awards Selection Committee. The scholarships shall be awarded annually, provided that there are candidates whose work is of sufficient merit. The value of the award shall be determined by the committee. James King of Irrawang Travelling Scholarship Conditions of Award Founded in 1888 by a bequest of £1000 sterling from William Roberts of Penrith, for the foundation of a scholarship or scholarships in memory of James King of Irrawang, near Raymond Terrace. The scholarship is awarded under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. The name of the scholarship shall be the James King of Irrawang Travelling Scholarship. The object of the scholarship is to enable travel outside Australia for the purposes of research. The scholarship is open to: (a) full-time postgraduate students currently enrolled in the University of Sydney for whom it is academically desirable to spend time outside Australia as part of their candidature; and (b) graduates of the University who proceed outside Australia to undertake research work and who are unable to meet their total cost from other funds, which may include travelling scholarships or travel grants. Holders of the scholarships will be required to prosecute studies or research during the tenure of the scholarship to the satisfaction of the Academic Board in some place or places approved by the Board. The value of the award shall be determined by the committee. There may be more than one award each year. The scholarships shall be awarded by the Academic Board on the recommendation of a committee appointed by the Academic Board to consider travelling scholarships. Lightoller Scholarship Conditions of Award Established in 1948 by a bequest of £10 000 from Dr G.H.S. Lightoller, MD ChM, for many years an honorary demonstrator in anatomy. The scholarship is awarded under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. The name of the scholarship shall be the G.H.S. and I.R. Lightoller Scholarship. The object of the scholarship is to promote and encourage research work by graduates in the Faculties of Agriculture, Arts, Engineering and Information Technologies, Medicine, Science and Veterinary Science and to provide where necessary funds for the publication of papers embodying the research work of such graduates. The scholarship is open to students enrolled for a higher degree in the Faculties of Agriculture, Arts, Engineering and Information Technologies, Medicine, Science or Veterinary Science: (a) for whom it is academically desirable to spend time outside Australia as part of their candidature and who are unable to meet the total costs from other funds, or (b) who require assistance with the publication of papers embodying the results of their research. Holders of the scholarship who proceed overseas will be required to undertake studies or research in some place or places approved by the Academic Board. The value of the award shall be determined by the committee. There may be more than one award each year. The scholarship shall be awarded by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the committee appointed by the Academic Board to consider travelling scholarships Frederick Sefton Delmer Travelling Scholarship* Conditions of Award Established in 1991 by a bequest of $50 000 from Miss Margaret Mabel Sefton Delmer to establish an award in the Department of Germanic Studies in memory of her father. Awarded annually under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. The award will be known as the Frederick Sefton Delmer Travelling Scholarship; The purpose of the scholarship will be to assist the following students to travel to one or more German speaking countries in Europe for the purpose of improving their knowledge of the German language: i) Undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in the Department of Germanic Studies and ii) Graduates of the University of Sydney of not more than four years standing; Awards will be made on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Germanic Studies acting on the advice of a departmental committee; Holders are not expected to undertake a course of study but may receive credit towards their studies at the University of Sydney if they do so; The award may be shared but no award will be made in any year in which there is not a candidate of sufficient merit; and Applications will close with the Registrar. Wentworth to be invested and allowed to accumulate until it should reach an amount which, in the opinion of the Senate, would be sufficient for the foundation of a travelling scholarship. The first award was made in 1923. In 1988 it was decided to award the fellowship in the form of a grant-in-aid. The fellowship is awarded under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. The name of the award shall be the Wentworth Travelling Fellowship. The award shall be in the form of a grant-in-aid to assist a scholar who wishes to undertake research work in Europe. The award shall be open to any graduate in Arts of the University of Sydney. The award shall be awarded by the committee of the Academic Board appointed to consider applications for postgraduate awards. The award shall be awarded annually, provided there is a candidate of sufficient merit, and shall have a value as determined by the committee. Hellenic Club Research Scholarship in Classical Archaeology Conditions of Award Established in 1989 by an offer from the Hellenic Club to establish a postgraduate research scholarship in classical Hellenic archaeology. The scholarship shall be awarded under the following conditions: 1. The scholarship is available to Australian citizens and permanent residents of Australia, or foreign students engaged in postgraduate research in classical Hellenic archaeology within the University of Sydney, or to Bachelor of Arts graduates of the University of Sydney who have completed an honours course in archaeology and are undertaking postgraduate research in classical Hellenic archaeology in another Australian or overseas university. 2. The scholarship shall be awarded by the committee of the Academic Board appointed to consider applications for postgraduate awards 3. The scholarship may be awarded to applicants already holding another postgraduate scholarship. 4. The value of the scholarship shall be determined by the selection committee Scholarships Office – GIA Information & Conditions (rev. 14-7-16) Scholarships Office Grants-in-Aid Information & Conditions Thelma Herring Memorial Award in English Literature Conditions of Award Established in 1979 in memory of Thelma Herring, Tutor/Teaching Fellow 1941-49, Lecturer 1950-65 and Senior Lecturer 1968-75 in the Department of English. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of English to a graduate of the University who has obtained a postgraduate award for the purpose of undertaking studies in the United Kingdom in English literature, to assist in the purchase of books. William and Catherine McIlrath Scholarships (Grants-in-Aid) Conditions of Award In 1983 an annual donation of $25,000 was offered by Mrs Helen Selle to establish a travelling scholarship in memory of her parents, William and Catherine McIlrath, who had a long association with the University of Sydney. William McIlrath was, for many years, a member of the Board of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. In 2003, at the request of Mrs Selle, the award was changed to support grants-in-aid designed to enable outstanding full-time postgraduate students enrolled in a research degree at the University of Sydney to travel overseas for part of their candidature, to undertake research relevant to their candidature. This change reinforces the expressed wish of Mrs Selle for the scholarships to provide opportunities for students to broaden their horizons during their candidatures, and to maximise the chance of benefits flowing back to Australia. The scholarships shall be awarded under the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. The name of the scholarships shall be the William and Catherine McIlrath Scholarships (Grants-in-Aid). The object of the scholarships is to enable outstanding full-time postgraduate research students enrolled at the University of Sydney to travel overseas during their candidature, to undertake research relevant to their candidature. The scholarships shall be open to full-time students enrolled in postgraduate research degrees in the Faculties of Veterinary Science; Agriculture and Environment; and Engineering and Information Technologies. The scholarships shall be awarded by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the nominees of the donor and the committee appointed by the Academic Board to consider applications for Grants inAid. The scholarships shall be awarded taking into consideration: (a) scholastic achievement; (b) ability to communicate in writing; and (c) appropriateness of the proposed plan of study. The selection committee shall also take into account motivation and the prospect each applicant has of achieving the stated goals. The scholarships shall be tenable for up to six months overseas during the applicant’s candidature at the University. The number of scholarships to be awarded per year and the value of each scholarship shall be determined by the committee. Each scholarship shall consist of one or more of the following items: a living allowance, an economy return airfare and a bench fee or research expenses if charged by the overseas institution. As a general guide, the value of the living allowance is expected to be equivalent to the difference between the applicant’s current scholarship (if applicable) and the living allowance for a student in the country in which the applicant will study, as recommended by the relevant overseas institution. Scholarships Office – GIA Information & Conditions (rev. 14-7-16) Scholarships Office Grants-in-Aid Information & Conditions Sydney University Graduates Union of North America (SUGUNA) Alumni Scholarship – to USA and Canada Conditions of Award Established in 2006, the SUGUNA Alumni Scholarship was made possible by a grant from the University of Sydney USA Foundation. The Scholarship is available to full-time postgraduate research students at the University of Sydney who are graduates of the University for travel to the USA and Canada to pursue research study opportunities as part of their candidature. In accepting the award, the recipient is required to: • • Make every effort to attend the August Annual SUGUNA Conference if his/her travel plan permits; and Submit a short written report (approx 200 words) to SUGUNA within six months of accepting the offer of the award, detailing the activities supported by the Scholarship and results achieved. These reports may be used to promote ongoing participation in, and donations to, the Scholarship. Up to $5,000 may be awarded to a successful applicant but the amount may be shared by more than one applicant at the discretion of the selection committee.
