M r G erry and the President.-f-The Boston Statesman says, that Mr. Gerry has “ assured these editors that nothing that could be tortured into a violation of decorum, transpired during his inter view- with General Jackson.” Thus, one by one, the vile calumnies o f the tinprlncipled, mendicant letter w riters of the coalition, are dishonoured by the open contradiction o f its own partizans. -U . S. Telegraph. ^A paper is about being published in Bal timore to be called the Loconiotive Engine. The JBible.—It is stated that an officer in the U. S. army at the Sault de St. Marie, has tranalated the greater portion of the BiDle into the language of the Indians. The narrations in Genesis are said to have exci ted great interest arnong the Indians, from their striking accordance, in many particu lars, with their own most cherished tra ditions. From the Baltimore Gazette, Jan. 23. W e learn th a t an experiment was this morning made on the R ail Road with the car which has been constructed 10 be propelled by means o f a m il. The wind being fair and ftesh, it was carried along at the rate o f twenty miles an hour, and excited a great deal o f . ad miration at the facility with which it was managed. In addition, we have the gratification to state, th at Mr. Beltzboover, the keep er of the Indian Q ueen H otel, has been desired to provide accommodations for a number o f members o f Congress, who design to take advantage o f the recess in the session o f the House, to visit the great and interesting work in the neigh bourhood of our city, this afternoon. The Rail Road is becoming the lion of 'h e day, and we are glad to discover that the great men o f the nation are sensible o f its importance, and enter tain a laudable curiosity to be acquaint ed with the effects o f the experiments daily tried upon it. Literary Curiosity.—W e have lately been gratified with a sight o f a copy o f the Breeches Bible, B arker’s edition printed in 1591-2; to which is annexed the whole o f the Church o f England Service, Sternhold and Hopkip’s Psalms set to musick, &c. &c. and also a Gene alogical T ree o f th e Families from Adam to Christ. This curious reliqne of antiquity is nineteen years older than a copy sold lately in London a t one hundred pounds, to which an allusion is made in the affixed note, taken at the time from a London new spaper; “ T he Holy Bible, translated according to the Hebrew and G reek folio, London; R o bert Barker, I S l l . ” “ T his old and once much esteemed translation is com monly called ‘ the Breeches Bible,’ be cause in the seventh verse o f the third chapter o f Genesis, the translator says —And they (Adam and Eve) sewed iSgge-tree leaves together and made themselves^ 'breeches.— Glassgow Free Press. BAbTiMonp, Jan. 25. .Attempt to Rob the Stage,—This morning at a little before 6 o’clock, as the A ccom m od ation S t a g e b e lo n g in g to the line o f Messrs. Barnum, Beltzhoorer & Co. was ascending a hill on th e Washington Turnpike, about tw o hun dred yards beyond where it diverges from the P ra tt street road, th e driver was fired upon, though without efiect, the ball passing near his head, by some person concealed a t the side o f the road. The horses taking fright a t the report of the pistol, set off a t full speed, when a second ball more accurately aimed than the first passed through one o f the thighs o f the driver. The keeper o f th e gate, near which the outrage was committed, alarmed at the furious rate a t which th e stage ap peared to be advancing, closed his gates , against it, and, with th e assistance o f I the driver, succeeded in stopping the horses. T h e driver was then taken from his seat, a n d . upon removing his dress to examine the state o f the wound, a large ball rolled out, having entirely passed through his thigh, though fortu nately* without fracturing the bone. The stage contained a number of passengers, several o f them members of Congress, and one o f them a lady. The number of the villains is not dis tinctly ascertained, th e driver being of opinion that there w ere three, and one of the passengers declared he saw six. Conversations on Vegetable Physiolo§y.~This is the name o f a neat duo decimo volume which has ju st been re published in this city by th e Messrs. Carvill, from the English edition. It is [ from the pen of a very popular w riter, tbe lady author of Conversations on i Chymistry—a book pronounced by the late Sir Humphrey Davy as th e best elementary work on chymistry in the English language. T h e contents o f Ine present work comprehend the eleoients of botany, and their application to agricultures and their basis is the lectures of a distinguished professor of ■geneva, t h # author having followed aim with regard to facts and opinions, and claiming to herself no other merit ^nan the attractive and popular form in 'vhich she has conveyed them . H er Ptevious works possess g reat fascina|‘ons, for young persons, o f style and ilMration; and We see no reason to beueve that this volume will prove less popular than the others.—E v. Post. The notice, issued by the Marshal at Wash‘Ooton, prescribing the manner in which ^^ttiages shall approach the President’s “onse on drawing room evenings, and other ?dcb matters, has given rise to some scurril“V>and a good many attempts at witticism. ”Uevening paper of this city, sneering on 08 subject, observed that the-assistance 0* the police might be necessary now-abut that it had not been found so hereofore. This was about as accurate, as that oofoi lunate print usually is. The following, ^j'lch we quote from a Washington pajJer, show wherein the practice differs now<i'days, from that of the former Presidents. , As to the police officers posted at the por, for the purpose of preventing the ad“ssion of boys and improper persons, they substituted by the Marshal, in the Pace of the negro porter and a file o f sol*ers, who were charged with that duty un*be administration of Mr. Adams. In opinion of the President, it was the duty ‘be civil, and not of the military, to Reserve order on such occasions.” —Eve. y^obias Watkins.—The case of Dr. Wat'as has been again brought before the noiceof the publick; and it is probable, that aether diseussion will ensue from its revixj 9® Saturday in the Supreme Court, t Bichard S. We understand that the applicatioii made by Mr. Coxe is clilefly grounded upon the argument so long discussed during the late trial of this case, and decided upon by the Justices of the Circuit Court, with, respect to the common law jurisdiction of the Fe deral Courts of the United States within the District o f Colombia.—-Washington Tel. w i r o y r i s i 'i i e t i m e , Selling off at reducedjprices. The efficacy of an antidote is hardly ever questioned by the person who finds that he has been bitten by a venomous reptile; but he at once applies the remedy, and looks for its operation.
