There are many words in the English language that sound the same, but have
different meanings or spellings. It is important to get these correct in your
writing. Here are a few of those common mistakes.
Whether and Weather – Whether introduces choices. I didn’t know whether to study Science or
Maths at college. Weather is to do with the state of the atmosphere. The weather outside is
rubbish.
Witch and Which - Witch refers to a scary woman who casts spells. The evil witch put a spell on the
small boy. Which means to choose from a range of options. Which colour do you like the best?
Two, Too and To - Two means the number. There were only two seats left at the concert. Too means
also or an excess. Can I come to the party too? To introduces a verb (doing word). I am going to run
the London marathon.
Know, Now and No - Know means to have knowledge. I know who is going to win the Xfactor this
year. Now means at this moment in time. Pick up your pen now. No means the opposite of ‘yes’ or
without. There is no chance that I am going to fail my exams.

This week I have been to many places. At one of them I saw a witch. Infact, there
were too many witches for my liking. I know that they can’t really hurt you and
that many witches are good witches. My sister though was terrified. She asked me
“Which one is the witch from The Wizard of Oz?” I laughed as I did not know
whether she was joking or not.
“No,” I said. “You have it wrong. The witch in The Wizard of Oz is a bad witch. She
is not real.” Just after I said it the weather turned bad and a loud witch cackle
bellowed out. Now my sister looked terrified and she began to cry. We had to go
home.
