The United States and the European Union: From 20th Century Partnership to 21st Century Rivalry with Claudia Dunlea Course Description: Forged in the aftermath of World War II, the transatlantic partnership between Europe and the US has proven successful and resilient over the second half of the 20th century. Europe developed from a continent in need of US aid and support after World War II, to a partner during the Cold War. However, the international environment changed radically with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and later, the shock of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The question for the 21st century is therefore: Will we remain partners or become rivals? The Europeans cannot match the raw military size of the US. However, the EU already is a new sort of superpower—and the US seems to be oblivious to this trend. To this extent, this course intends to give a thought-provoking assessment of the EU’s international influence; it’s economic, political, and cultural strengths; and European thinking as a competitive alternative to Americanism. m m m m m m m m m American Presidents Lecture Series with Ronald Feinman Fall Lecture Series (Thursdays) October 27, 2011 The Presidency of Jimmy Carter ** This lecture will be held on the Palms Terrace November 3, 2011 The Presidency of Ronald Reagan November 10, 2011 The Presidency of Bill Clinton November 17, 2011 The Presidency of Barack Obama after Three Years Fall Lecture Series (Tuesdays) October 25, 2011 Lessons of Two World Wars: Why Strive for a United Europe? As Marie Antoinette, she spent the next two decades at the most splendid court of Europe, initially admired as the personification of 18th-century French royal style. However, by the time she died under the blade of the guillotine at the age of 38 during the French Revolution, she was loathed as no queen of France ever had been. Augmented by PowerPoint visuals, handouts, and various film clips, this course illustrates/follows the life of Marie Antoinette — from a teenage girl plagued by marital difficulties that were subject to public ridicule, to a young woman who allegedly engaged in a scandalous extra-marital affair with a dashing Swedish nobleman, to a controversial queen who ultimately ended up vilified as l’Autrichienne (“the Austrian woman”), and became the scapegoat for the monarchy’s failure.
