An adjective clause is a subordinate clause that modifies a noun
or pronoun.
An adverb clause is a subordinate clause that modifies a verb, an
adjective, or an adverb.
ADJECTIVE CLAUSE The man who bought lunch for us is my uncle.
ADVERB CLAUSE Look on this shelf before you call the library.
EXERCISE A For each of the following sentences, underline each
adjective clause and adverb clause and label it ADJ for adjective clause or
ADV for adverb clause.
1. The Alamo was originally a Roman Catholic mission that was called San
Antonio de Valero.
2. When Texas declared itself independent from Mexico, General Santa Anna
brought in the Mexican Army.
3. A small group, which included such famous men as James Bowie and Davy
Crockett, defended the city of San Antonio.
4. Lieutenant Colonel William Barret Travis and his men retreated to the Alamo,
which is in the center of San Antonio.
5. One hundred eighty-nine men held off the Mexican Army for thirteen days
before General Santa Anna’s army stormed the mission and killed all the men
there.
