LUMBERJACK FOOTBALL AT TEXAS TECH SATURDAY
Stephen F. Austin begins its 90th season of football when the Lumberjacks travel to Lubbock, facing Big 12 opponent Texas Tech on
Saturday, September 3rd at Jones AT&T Stadium. The game against the Red Raiders will kick at 7:07 p.m., airing on FOX Sports Net,
as the Lumberjacks and Red Raiders meet for the third time in the series history.
FOLLOWING THE ‘JACKS
SFA’s 2016 season opener at Texas Tech will air on Fox Sports Net, kicking off at 7:07 p.m. Ron Thulin will handle the play-by-play
duties with Gary Reasons handling the color commentary and Abby Hornacek on the sidelines. For cable viewers, the game can be
seen on FOX Sports Southwest Plus, which is Suddenlink channel 39 (239 HD) in Nacogdoches and Lufkin. For DirecTV viewers, the
game can be found on channel 676-1 as well as channels 754 (SD) and 1754 (HD) on AT&T U-Verse. The game will also be streamed
online at FOX Sports Go as viewers will just need their user ID and password to log in and watch. Rob Meyers will return for another
season as the “Voice of the ‘Jacks,” with a number of different ways to listen to the game. Q107.7 FM will once again serve as the
radio home of SFA Football, streaming online at Q1077.com. New this year, fans can also catch the game through the TuneIn app on
iPhone and Android devices. Search for “Stephen F. Austin” as the new channel will carry all games live worldwide.
LUMBERJACKS AGAINST THE BIG 12
For the fourth-straight season, Stephen F. Austin will go head-to-head against a Big 12 foe as Saturday’s game marks the Lumberjacks’ 10th game in program history against current Big 12 members. SFA is still seeking its first win against the conference as
the Lumberjacks are 0-4 all-time against Baylor, 0-1 against Kansas State and 0-2 against both TCU and Texas Tech. The ‘Jacks have
played five games against current Big 12 foes since 2008 (TCU - 2008; Baylor - 2011; Texas Tech - 2013; Kansas State - 2014; TCU 2015), including a game against then-conference member Texas A&M in 2010.

SERIES INFORMATION
Stephen F. Austin and Texas Tech meet for the third time Saturday as the Red Raiders have won the previous two games, both of
which were played in Lubbock. The Red Raiders defeated the Lumberjacks 58-3 on November 24, 2001, a game that was postponed
over two months in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks (the two were originally suppose to play on Saturday, September
15th). Tech then defeated SFA 61-13 on September 7, 2013, using 31 unanswered points to close out the first half and seal the first
home victory for head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

CONSISTENCY IN THE COACHING RANKS
When describing the Lumberjack coaching staff, consistency might be the most adequate description. Head coach Clint Conque
returns for his third season at the helm of SFA, posting a 12-12 record through his first two years in Nacogdoches and leading the
‘Jacks to the FCS playoffs in 2014. Nine of his 10 assistants are also back for their third season under Conque at SFA, including assistant head coach Demo Odems (WR) and defensive coordinator Matt Williamson (LB), as running backs coach Jeremy Moses is
entering his fifth year with the program.
REUNITED ONCE AGAIN...
The one coaching change that occurred in the offseason was at the offensive coordinator position as coaching veteran Gary Crowton
joined the Lumberjack staff in January, replacing former OC Matt Kubik who took the same position at Louisiana-Monroe. Crowton
is well known among the NCAA coaching ranks, having served as the head coach at Louisiana Tech and BYU and as the offensive
coordinator at programs such as Oregon, LSU, Maryland the Chicago Bears, winning a national title with the Tigers in 2007. This will
not be the first time that he and head coach Clint Conque have shared a sideline, although the tables have turned slightly as Conque
served as Crowton’s offensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech from 1996-98.
...PART TWO
Saturday’s game at Jones AT&T Stadium will not be the first time starting quarterbacks Zach Conque (SFA) and Patrick Mahomes
(Tech) have shared a field this season. The two were both among a handful of collegiate quarterbacks selected to participate in the
prestigious Manning Passing Academy this past June in Thibodaux, Louisiana, getting an opportunity to be mentored by future NFL
Hall of Famer Peyton Manning, current New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning and NFL legend Archie Manning.
CONQUE NAMED TO PRESEASON FCS NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR WATCHLIST
Senior quarterback Zach Conque enters his third season as the Lumberjacks’ starting quarterback and has already gained a number of preseason accolades. This past week, Conque was named to the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) FCS National
Performer of the Year watch list, one of just four Southland Conference players named to the list. The Little Rock native was also
tabbed the Southland Conference’s preseason first team selection at quarterback after leading the conference in touchdowns accounted for in 2015 (27), earning honorable mention honors. Conque enters his senior campaign already sitting among the all-time
Lumberjack quarterback greats, ranking sixth all-time in total completions (426), seventh in career total offense (5,846 yards),
eighth in career passing yards (4,666) and ninth in career touchdown passes (31). He also holds the distinction as the top rushing
quarterback in program history, accumulating 1,180 yards on the ground with 24 touchdowns, ranking tied for fourth all-time in
program history in career rushing scores.

LUMBERJACK TRIO EARN PRESEASON ALL-SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE HONORS
Three SFA Lumberjacks were named preseason All-Southland Conference selections, based on votes from the league’s head coaches
and sports information directors. Senior quarterback Zach Conque and junior defensive end John Franklin were named first team
selections while senior safety Patrick Martin was a second team honoree. Conque, an honorable mention selection in 2015, accounted for nearly 2,500 yards of total offense and 27 touchdowns, the most of any SLC player. Franklin, a second team honoree
last season, is the ‘Jacks leading returning tackle for loss leader with 8.5 and six sacks, both of which ranked among the conference
leaders. Martin, a four-year starter for SFA, is a two-time honorable mention All-SLC selection and is one of SFA’s two leading
returning tacklers, finishing with 52 in 2015.
RETURNING OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER
One source of optimism for Stephen F. Austin heading into 2016 is the number of offensive skill positions that return for the Lumberjacks. SFA returns 100% of its passing offense from 2015, 92% of its rushing production and 74% of its receiving yards, including its
top three rushers (Loren Easly, Joshawa West and Zach Conque) and top five receivers (Aaron Piper, Robert Sylvester, Justice Liggins,
De’Quann Ruffin and Joshawa West).
QUESTION MARKS ON THE OFFENSIVE FRONT…
The one area offensively that has the most question marks in 2016 is on the offensive line, a stark contrast from 2015 when SFA
boasted one of the most experienced offensive lines in the country. The Lumberjacks’ five starters from last season combined for
200 games played and 164 starts in their careers, but in 2016 just center Anthony Pullins and left tackle Travis Wiggins return as the
duo have each played in 31 games with 27 starts.

... BUT CONFIDENCE ON THE DEFENSIVE FRONT
Arguably no position on the field enters 2016 with fewer question marks, and more pressure, than the SFA defensive line. The ‘Jacks
return three proven veterans at the defensive end position, led by senior Kedrick Harrison and junior John Franklin. Harrison enters
2016 needing just 3.5 tackles for loss to crack the all-time top 10 in that category while Franklin, a first team All-SLC preseason
selection, is looking to build on his breakout sophomore season, earning second team all-conference honors. Senior Jamal Allen
and junior Mitchel Zimmerle have both been key contributors for the past two seasons as well.
1,000 YARD CLUB ADDS TWO
Stephen F. Austin’s 1,000-yard rushing club added two new members in 2015 as quarterback Zach Conque and running back Joshawa West joined the ranks, becoming the 27th and 28th members respectively. Conque currently ranks 21st in program history with
1,180 career rushing yards (and tops all time among Lumberjack quarterbacks) while West ranks 23rd with 1,115 career rushing
yards. Conque also holds a special distinction as he is the only member of both the 3,000-yard passing and 1,000-yard rushing clubs
in Lumberjack program history, sitting at 4,666 passing yards entering 2016.
LUMBERJACKS IN SEASON OPENERS
Stephen F. Austin begins its 90th season of football Saturday as the Lumberjacks have posted an all-time record of 47-37-5 (.556) in
season openers. The ‘Jacks are looking to end a streak of three-straight opening day losses, falling at Weber State (50-40) in 2013,
at Kansas State (55-16) in 2014 and against Northern Arizona (34-28) in 2015. It will be the fifth time SFA has opened the season
against a current Big 12 opponent, opening three times against Baylor (1928, 1929 and 1947) and once at Kansas State (2014).
LUMBERJACKS PICKED FIFTH IN SLC PRESEASON POLL
After coming off a 4-7 season in 2015, Stephen F. Austin was picked to finish fifth by both the Southland Conference head coaches
and sports information directors. The Lumberjacks garnered 60 points in the head coaches poll, finishing seven points back of
fourth-place Lamar, while finishing with 66 points among the SIDs, one point behind the fourth-place Cardinals. The last time SFA
was picked to finish fifth in the preseason poll was 2009, when the Lumberjacks went 10-3 overall and 6-1 in SLC play, capturing
the Southland Conference championship.
SFA RECEIVING VOTES IN PRESEASON AFCA COACHES POLL
Stephen F. Austin heads into 2016 receiving votes in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) FCS poll. The Lumberjacks
garnered five points in the preseason poll and are one of four Southland Conference schools making an appearance. Sam Houston
State enters the year ranked second overall with reigning SLC champion McNeese sitting ninth. Southeastern Louisiana joins SFA
among the receiving votes ranks, tallying 17 points.
WALLS NAMED AFCA GOOD WORKS TEAM NOMINEE
Junior safety Marlon Walls earned some high praise during the summer, being named a 2016 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team nominee. Encompassing a balance between athletic performance, academics and community service, Walls has excelled in all three areas for the ‘Jacks. A 4.00 student in engineering physics, he was named a Capital One Academic
All-District and Southland Conference All-Academic team selection in 2015 after playing in all 11 games for SFA. Walls also is active
in the community, visiting a number of area elementary schools and is an advocate for healthy lifestyles among area youth.
LUMBERJACKS ON SEPTEMBER 3RD
In the 90 year history of Stephen F. Austin football, Saturday’s game at Texas Tech will be just the second time in program history the
Lumberjacks will play a game on September 3rd. The only other time the ‘Jacks suited up on the date, they dropped a 21-7 decision
at Southern Miss 1988. That year proved to be a memorable one as SFA went 10-3 overall and 5-1 in Southland Conference play,
qualifying for the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs for the first time and advancing to the quarterfinals.
DEFINITION OF STUDENT-ATHLETES
Five Stephen F. Austin football student-athletes have already reached the pinnacle of their collegiate careers, earning their collegiate degrees this past May. Fullback Jabralon Allen (kinesiology), defensive end Jamal Allen (kinesiology), quarterback Zach
Conque (kinesiology), defensive end Kedrick Harrison (health science) and offensive lineman Jake Wallace (business administration) will all suit up this season as college graduates for Stephen F. Austin, furthering head coach Clint Conque’s commitment to
academics as well as performance on the field.

Third Season at SFA
17th Season Overall
Nicholls State, 1983
Clint Conque is in his third season as the Lumberjacks’ head
coach, setting a precedent for the success of SFA football.
In his first two seasons, Conque has posted a 12-12 record at
the helm of the Lumberjacks, including a 9-8 record in Southland
Conference play. Those wins have included three victories over
nationally-ranked programs, including a 28-27 win at 21st-ranked
Southeastern Louisiana in 2015.
Also during his first two years, Conque has mentored five AllSLC players, including second team defensive end John Franklin in
2015. In addition, offensive linemen Terran Vaughn and Byron Williams both signed free agent contracts with the Oakland Raiders
following the season.
In his first season in Nacogdoches, Conque led SFA to an 8-5
record, a five-win improvement from 2013, as the 2014 squad became just the 13th team in program history to reach the eight-win
plateau. Picked to finish sixth in the preseason Southland Conference standings, SFA went 5-3 in SLC play, including wins at sixthranked McNeese State and against eighth-ranked Southeastern
Louisiana, tying for third in the conference standings and earning a
bid to the 2014 NCAA FCS playoffs.
SFA cracked the FCS Coaches Poll Top-25 twice in 2014, marking the first time the Lumberjacks had been ranked in the nation’s
top-25 since 2010. Conque helped guide the ‘Jacks to their first
NCAA playoff appearance since 2010, earning SLC Coach of the Year
honors for the third time in his career and was a finalist for the FCS
Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year for the fourth time.
Under Conque’s guidance, senior running back Gus Johnson
had the best rushing season in program history, setting six SFA
rushing records as well as setting the Southland Conference record
for rushing yards in a season. Johnson was named the SLC Player of
the Year and was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award (finishing
ninth in the voting) while sophomore quarterback Zach Conque
was named the SLC Newcomer of the Year.
Conque brought to Nacogdoches an impressive coaching resume built on success, posting an overall career record of 105-59
(.640) during his 14 seasons as the head coach at Central Arkansas.
He remains the all-time winningest coach in Bear program history
while becoming just the second collegiate head coach in the state
of Arkansas to amass 100 career victories, sitting behind only legendary Razorback coach Frank Broyles.
Central Arkansas established itself as one of the top teams
both regionally and nationally during Conque’s tenure, capturing
the Southland Conference title in 2008 and 2012, advancing to the
FCS playoffs in both 2011 and 2012. UCA also made a pair of NCAA
Division II playoff appearances during Conque’s time in Conway, including advancing to the quarterfinals in 2005, before the program
made the transition to the FCS level following the 2005 season.
During the eight seasons in which Central Arkansas competed
in the Southland Conference, Conque has posted a 33-16 record in
SLC play (.673), being named the Southland’s Coach of the Year in
2008 and 2012 in addition to the same honor in 2005. The NCAA
FCS Region 5 Coach of the Year in 2008, Conque has also been a
three-time finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award
with his teams boasting seven top-25 finishes since 2001.
Under Conque’s tutelage, his players have been recognized for
their efforts on the field time and time again. During his coaching
career, 127 players have been recognized as all-conference selections with 37 earning All-America honors as 32 former players have
gone on to play professionally, including 14 signing NFL contracts
with an additional six in the CFL.
Conque’s UCA teams won eight or more games in eight of his
14 seasons in Conway, including an 11-3 mark in 2005 that tied the
program record for wins in a season as the Bears advanced to the
Division II national quarterfinals. Central Arkansas reached the 10win plateau again in 2008 as the Bears posted a 10-2 mark. Known
for his high-tempo offenses, Conque’s teams consistently ranked
among the national leaders in both scoring and passing offense as
the Bears have finished in the top-10 nationally in passing offense
five times and scoring offense four times.
His focus hasn’t been solely on the field, however, as Conque’s
teams have boasted some of the highest APR (Academic Progress
Rate) scores in the region with three Academic All-Americans during his coaching career.
Before taking over the helm of the Central Arkansas program
in 2000, Conque spent seven seasons at Louisiana Tech (1993-99)
in a variety of roles. Conque oversaw the Bulldogs’ running backs,
receivers and special teams before ultimately serving as the offensive coordinator in 1999 as Louisiana Tech led the nation passing
offense and was second in total offense en route to an 8-3 record.
Prior to his time in Ruston, three seasons at Samford University
(1990-92) as the running backs coach, helping guide the Bulldogs
to back-to-back NCAA Division I-AA playoff appearances in 1991
and 1992, posting a 22-4 record during that span. Conque began
his collegiate coaching career at McNeese State (1987-89), spending three seasons coaching the Cowboys’ running backs and outside linebackers.
A graduate of Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, La.,
Conque was an All-American linebacker at Nicholls State University
in Thibodaux, La., picking up first team honors by the Associated
Press. He also was named a second team LSWA All-Louisiana selection as a senior as Conque was selected to Nicholls’ Silver Anniversary Team in 1997 and in 2005 was inducted into the school’s Hall
of Fame.
Following his playing career at Nicholls, Conque landed with the
Los Angeles Raiders only to have his career cut short by injury in
1983. He then returned to Nicholls and began his coaching career
as a graduate assistant for the Colonels before spending a pair of
seasons coaching in the high school ranks.
Conque is married to the former Angele’ Jackson and the couple
has three sons: Chasse, the Director of Athletics at Arkansas-Little
Rock; Benton, a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army currently stationed
in South Korea; and Zach, the Lumberjacks’ starting quarterback.
Conque is the grandfather of three girls as Juliana and Sydney were
born to Chasse and wife, Lisa, in 2012, followed by the addition of
Adeline in 2014.
