Excellence
The redesign of the Mission Health Nursing Professional
Practice Model (PPM) was the cumulative work of hundreds of clinical nurses and clinical nurse leaders
who answered the question: “What is a professional nurse?” The work started at the system-wide Nursing Leadership Retreat on October 10, 2016. Each participant
contributed three to five words that most exemplified professional nursing. The collection of words
was brought to the Professional Governance redesign team, a group of 25 clinical nurses and clinical
nurse leaders. This team met seven times in the fall of 2016 to develop the Mission, Vision, Philosophy,
Professional Practice Model and Professional Governance for Mission Health nursing.
The redesign team members added their own descriptive words to the long list. A small group of
clinical leaders and clinical nurses then met to distill all of these words down to the top rated key
concepts, which were outlined at the system-wide Professional Practice Model Retreat on January 23,
2017. Consensus of eight participants at each of the 12 tables for their top four words was achieved and
discussed by the large group. The top words chosen were developed into the final model. When the
group realized that four top words could be arranged to spell the acronym CARE, the choice was made.
Compassion, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence were chosen to surround the words “Nursing is our
mission” and set in the dogwood and cross logo historically used to represent Mission Health for more
than 12 years.
