A different child could do each page, then put it together to present the whole story. • Write a shadow book… have the kids draw parts of the story and make their own classroom book Even more things to do with a book… } Concepts } Act out/scripts } Step into the story } Drawing } Categorization } Venn (compare/contrast) VOCABULARY Research Shows It is more effective to support all four types of vocabulary for struggling students (NRP, 2001). } Directly teaching word parts - affixes, base words, roots greatly enhance vocabulary because 60% of English words have Latin or Greek origins (Armbruster & Osborn, 2001). } Challenging students to create original sentences with target words increases personal interest and word learning (Beck, et al, 2002). } Word learning depends on the other sounds and words the child already knows. How a new word relates to these existing words (neighborhood density) positively influences the speed of learning (Hoover & Storkel, 2005). } The use of opposition (antonyms) in defining terms helps to establish extremes of a word’s meaning. Synonym production is improved by antonym production, although the reverse has not been shown to be true (Powell, 1986). 3 2/28/2017 Vocabulary Facts } 20, } 000 words in your active, speaking vocabulary - Susan Dent: http//www.lingholic.com A person…. } } } } Number of words used Starting school at 6 Without education With high school education With college education 5,000-6,000 words 35, 000 50,000 words 50,000-75,000 words - Dav id Crystal, linguist CORE - 80-85% of what you say comes from a set of 250-350 words EXTENDED - 20% of what you say is from the E other 20,000 words in your active vocabulary - Gail M Van Tatenhov e, SLP Most Frequently Found Words in Children’s Books } } } } } the and a you of to he I it in said his that she for on they but had was of at him with up all look is her there some out be have go we am then little down as do can could when did what so see not were get them like one this my me will yes would big went are come if now long no ask come an over your its ride into just blue red very from good any about around want don’t how know right put too got take where every pretty jump green four Descriptors } Color } Size } Shape } Action } Not 4 2/28/2017 } Part/Whole Is it a member of a group? } Location Where do you find it? } Time } Synonym } Senses } Composition What is it made of? } Function What does it do? } Association What goes with it? } “OUCH WORDS”: Thing It Stuff * all images are Public Domain, 2010, http://images.google.com COMPREHENSION } ‘Wh’ Questions with Meaning } Reading by Debbie Miller } Reading Comprehension Cubes WRITING } Using Story structure/sequence from topic } Shadow book } Mad Lib type scaffolding pages } Original works 5 2/28/2017 more on writing… WriTE BRAiN BOOKS } “A young person’s self-esteem is elevated when his/her voice is encouraged, and his/her story is heard and nd appreciated.” } “Every child has a story to tell.
