Things to do with a book…
Don’t just read it….read it 2-3 times and do a variety of activities:
• Pre-read…before you ever open the book, talk about the pictures,
cover, author, what they think it will be about, etc.
• Author…find out where they are from and show that on a map, show
other books they have written and any info you find about them on
their webpages
• Vocabulary…teach new and interesting words, make a big word wall,
focus on any concepts (big, over, through, farthest, etc)
• Story Parts… character, setting, problem, how fix problem, feelings
• How-To…make a snack/craft from something in the book…don’t forget
to use good sequencing words (first, next, then, after that, finally)
• Record the Kids…have them “read” or retell the story and audio
tape/video them. A different child could do each page, then put it
together to present the whole story.
• Write a shadow book… have the kids draw parts of the story and make
their own classroom book
Even more things to do with a book…

VOCABULARY Research Shows
It is more effective to support all four types of vocabulary for
struggling students (NRP, 2001).
} Directly teaching word parts - affixes, base words, roots greatly enhance vocabulary because 60% of English words
have Latin or Greek origins (Armbruster & Osborn, 2001).
} Challenging students to create original sentences with target
words increases personal interest and word learning (Beck, et al,
2002).
} Word learning depends on the other sounds and words the
child already knows. How a new word relates to these existing
words (neighborhood density) positively influences the speed
of learning (Hoover & Storkel, 2005).
} The use of opposition (antonyms) in defining terms helps to
establish extremes of a word’s meaning. Synonym production is
improved by antonym production, although the reverse has
not been shown to be true (Powell, 1986).

Koala Lou
Australia, her home in a gum tree
Her mom stopped saying, “Koala Lou, I DO love you.”
Sad, lonely
She decided that she would compete in the Bush Olympics and win so that
her mom would say “Koala Lou, I DO love you.”
First she jogged and lifted weights
Next, she hung from a branch until she ached
Then, she did push ups
After that, she climbed the highest tree she could find over and over
Finally, she competed in the Olympics but she lost.
As a result, Koala Lou hid and cried her heart out. Then, she went home and her
mother said “Koala Lou, I DO love you.”
Koala Lou felt content.
