Spring 2010 between friends big sisters of bc lower mainland newsletter Ana in 1984 Ana and Margo Today In honour of our agency’s 50th anniversary we are featuring an alumni Big & Little Sister match who are still in touch with each other today. Meet Margo & Ana Matched in 1984 On a spring day in 1984, Big Sister Margo met her seven year old Little Sister, Ana, in the midst of a family birthday party. When Ana chose to forgo birthday cake in favour of showing Margo her room, Margo knew she had been accepted into the life of her “vivacious and opinionated” Little Sister. Twenty-six years later, Margo and Ana are still fantastic friends. “I was always super comfortable with her,” Ana, now 33, says from her home in Montreal where she lives with her husband and daughter. “She got involved in my life and she also shared her life and experiences with me.” While Ana was growing with a single mom living on social assistance and dealing with often tumultuous relationships with her dad and sister, Margo provided her with consistency, friendship and time that was just for Ana. Ana looks back most fondly on the simple things they did together – the cookies, books and barbies – but she is also grateful for the “serious life talks” and the unique opportunities Margo provided her with (including a gig as a teen reporter), thanks to Margo’s work in public relations. Margo, a business owner, author and generous volunteer, has always inspired her Little Sister. “It’s motivating when you’ve got someone around you who is doing things and also pushing you a bit,” says Ana. Ana says she learned many things from Margo including how to take responsibility for your own happiness and how to resolve differences – not to mention how to make a great Cleopatra Halloween costume! These teachings have shaped who Ana is today. A life-long Big Sister, Margo sees the importance of mentoring. “No matter what you do in life, if you don’t have people helping you, loving you, supporting you – you’re not going to be ok.” Ana agrees, noting that girls today are facing the same issues they faced when she was young including low self-esteem and challenging family dynamics. “Big Sisters is still very relevant - it’s an im- portant organization to have,” says Ana. And, clearly, Margo continues to be a very important and relevant part of Ana’s life today as this special match continues to enjoy a true friendship that has stood the test of time and distance. A Message from the Chair I am writing this message as Vancouver prepares to host the 2010 Winter Olympics and many of us are not quite sure what to expect in the coming weeks. While our daily lives may be topsy-turvy for a few weeks, one thing is for sure – our Little Sisters will have a once-in-alifetime opportunity to experience the games, whether watching them on TV or the internet, or – for some lucky matches – from a seat at one of the events, thanks to VANOC and many kind donors. As our Canadian athletes pour their hearts and souls into their quest for gold, we admire their skill and the hard work they have put into being the best they can be, and hopefully we can all share in their celebration. Big Sisters also has much to celebrate – thanks to the commitment and dedication of hundreds of volunteers, supporters and staff, the organization was able to serve 519 girls in 2009 – a 20% increase from 2008! A gold medal performance for sure, but we know that the smiles on our Little Sisters’ faces are worth more than 100 gold medals. In 2010, the celebration continues after the Olympics as Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland recognizes its 50th anniversary. We are already starting to roll out a full lineup of exciting celebrations focusing on sharing our stories and recruiting volunteers. Check out the details of how we are celebrating our 50th on pages 4 & 5. After 13 successful years, our organization has made a decision to discontinue the Golf for Big Sisters tournament at this time and focus our resources on our Spring Lunch and Divas Gala events. We want to thank our esteemed golf tournament chairs, Renate Mueller and Roz Wishinski, for making this tournament such a success and raising $540,000 for Big Sisters over the past 13 years. We hope all of our golf supporters will join us at the Spring Lunch and Gala as we celebrate our 50 years of service to the community. A big welcome to Catherine Aczel Boivie who has joined the Honourary Advisory Board, and to our newest directors, Cali Mancia (Big Sister), Shauna Wilton, and Stephanie Hayes (Big Sister). I also want to say thank you to Deb Nicols who, after eight years of service including three years as Board Chair, has recently stepped down. Deb has left big shoes for me to fill, however I’m confident that together with Shannon, her amazing staff and the wise counsel of my fellow directors, we will guide this organization into another half-century celebration of women mentoring girls. As every year passes, we realize more and more how critical the work of our organization is in building the self-esteem and the healthy futures of young girls.” - Linda Parsons, Big Sisters volunteer since 1982 herself. And, as you know, when you believe in yourself…suddenly so much is possible. Celebrating 50 Years of Friendships in 2010 Happy Anniversary! 2010 marks the 50th anniversary of our agency – 50 years of friendships, 50 years of mentoring, 50 years of providing young girls in the Lower Mainland with positive role models. What started in the late 1950’s with a group of caring women deciding to simply provide their time and friendship to some girls in need at a Vancouver school has grown into Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland as you know it today. And although lots has changed since that time – we became a regis- tered non-profit organization in 1960, we have employed staff, three growing programs, and hundreds of volunteers annually – the foundation of what we do has not changed from the vision those women had in the 50’s. Every day, our volunteers and staff seek to provide vulnerable girls with the support and friendship of a positive role model. As we have witnessed throughout the past 50 years, a girl who has at least one person in her life who supports her and believes in her can then start to believe in As we talked about how we could celebrate our 50th anniversary, it became clear that we should celebrate, not with a traditional anniversary party, but in a way that would further our mission and celebrate mentoring. So, we are celebrating our anniversary by sharing our agency’s stories with our network and the community, plus we will use our anniversary to further mentoring in the Lower Mainland with a new volunteer recruitment campaign (created by MacLaren McCann) and various fundraisers – all to provide us with volunteers and funding for our future! Stay tuned for more information on our 50th anniversary throughout the year. Watch our enewsletter, website, Facebook page and blog for updates! And THANK YOU for being such a BIG part of our 50 year history! Big & Little Sister Stephanie and Chiara (left) and Study Buddies Kirsten & Dionna (right) wished Big Sisters a happy 50th birthday as part of our agency’s ‘BIG Anniversary Photo Contest’. 4 50th Anniversary Celebrations 50th Anniversary Blog Launched We are an organization of stories.
