The Africa Green Building Summit is Kenya Green Building Society’s largest summit and exhibition dedicated to green building. The Africa Green Building Summit (AGBS) brings both local and international industry leaders, experts, professionals and suppliers for solution based discussions year after year. The 2017 theme, Financing Sustainable Development Goals, targets the heart of sustainable development in Africa. As KGBS will host the World Green Building Council’s (WGBC) Africa Regional Network (ARN) Meeting for the 1st time in history, the opportunity to unlock finance for Africa’s sustainable development warrants solution based discussion. The ARN will gather the green building councils across Africa for meaningful adoption of green building on the continent. AGBS features three days of inspiring speakers; invaluable networking opportunities; green product and service showcase opportunities; training on Green Star Communities® and IFC Edge®; green leadership awards; ground-breaking announcements; and networking at our cocktail and Gala dinner. AGBS will be supporting several social enterprises in the production of the Summit. Join us as we host Jerry Yudelson, internationally recognized as one of the top green building keynote speakers. Dubbed by Wired magazine “The Godfather of Green,” since 2007, Jerry Yudelson has spoken to business and professional audiences at green building events on six continents. 4 BACKGROUND Two thirds of the buildings that will make up the world’s fastest growing cities by 2050 are yet to be built. So now is our chance to change the future. According to New Climate Economy, urban areas in sub-Saharan Africa will be home to 800 million more people in 2050 than 2014. All these people will live, work and study in buildings. The future growth in Africa presents a tremendous opportunity for stakeholders to reinvent the way we build –to benefit the economy, society and enable humanity and nature to thrive together. Getting it right with Cities has a significant potential, not just from a pure economic perspective but also from a social and environmental perspective. Getting it wrong is likely to be very costly economically, socially and environmentally. WHY FOCUS ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s), otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The world needs to be oriented in one direction to fight poverty or to help achieve sustainable development, but it is very hard in our noisy, disparate, divided, crowded, congested, distracted, and often overwhelmed world to mount a consistent effort to achieve any of our common purposes. The SDGs work in the spirit of partnership and pragmatism to make the right choices now to improve life, in a sustainable way, for future generations. They provide clear guidelines and targets for all countries to adopt in accordance with their own priorities and the environmental challenges of the world at large. The SDG’s are essential for social mobilization, spur epistemic communities, mobilize stakeholder networks and provide peer pressure. Financing of a green built environment and ultimately the built environment as an end product directly influences poverty, hunger, health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry, innovation and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, life on land, peace, justice and strong institutions, partnerships for the goals. WE AIM TO UNRAVEL 1. What do developers, both public and private need to do to access sustainable incentivized financing in 2017? 2. What finance is available to achieve sustainable development goals in green buildings? 3. Can we reinvent green building? Are we doing enough to mitigate climate change through green buildings? 4. What can’t be measured can’t be managed; Achieving the 2030 Agenda and the measures required to report to COP23 5. How can the region manifest a macro and micro green economy? 6. Have we exhausted opportunities for sustainable affordable housing in Africa? 7. How can we amplify green building education and vocational training for capacity building? 8. A message from Habitat III 5 AFRICA GREEN BUILDING CONFERENCE SDG’s Synergy With Green Buildings Socio-Economic – Address Societal challenges such as poverty, unemployment, lack of education and skills, and poor health through the process of designing, constructing and operating buildings. The KGBS is at the forefront of leading in the education and driving the realisation of the goals. Green buildings directly contribute to the realisation of a number of these goals, and indirectly to almost all seventeen Sustainable Development Goals. 7 AFRICA GREEN BUILDING CONFERENCE AGENDA AT A GLANCE WED. 22 | 3 | 17 8 Elizabeth Wangeci Chege KGBS Chairperson THU. 23 | 3 | 17 FRI. 24 | 3 | 17 7:00am Registration Open 7:00 am Registration Open 7:00 am Registration Open Security Clearance Security Clearance Security Clearance 8:15 am - 1:00pm Workshop 8:15 am - 1:00pm Workshop 8:15 am - 5:00pm Main Program GreenStar™ Communities Accredited Professional Workshop IFC EDGE Workshop AA Summit Program AA Closing Ceremony 9:00 am - 5:00pm Events 9:00 am - 5:00pm Events 9:00 am - 5:00pm Events AA Exhibition AA B2B Networking AA Platinum Sponsor side meetings AA Exhibition AA B2B Networking AA Platinum Sponsor side meetings AA Exhibition AA B2B Networking AA Platinum Sponsor side meetings 11:00 am - 6:00pm Parallel Sessions 10:00 am - 1:00pm Parallel Sessions 10:00 am - 1:00pm Parallel Sessions Breakout Sessions Breakout Sessions Breakout Sessions 11:00 am - 6:00pm GBC Members Only 1:15 pm - 5:00pm Main Program World Green Building Council Africa Regional Network Meeting Welcome Address & Summit Program 6:00pm - 9:00 pm Welcome Cocktail 7:00pm Gala Dinner On behalf of the Kenya Green Building Society, it is my honour to invite you to become a champion of the green building movement in Africa by sponsoring, getting trained and accredited, and deeply engaging in this cause for our future. As we work behind the scenes on the green building agenda, celebrating little wins now and then, I tend to wonder whether we are doing enough. Climate change is a global issue that requires local solutions and we cannot go about mitigating it on our own. Therefore, we are excited to embark on this journey of bringing the green building hurdles to the forefront. The discussion, perception and excuse that going green is expensive, continues in many boardrooms of teams that are charged with developing our cities. On the other end of the spectrum, to no one’s surprise, is the discussion on how much incentivised sustainability finance is available in Africa, most of which goes untouched year after year. We’ve taken on the responsibility of climate change mitigation. It is our foremost task in whatever we do. Since Green Building is our core activity, we have no other alternative than to bridge the gap between sourcing, mobilisation, and dissemination of funding and actualization of the SDG’s through green building. The 17 SDG’s have synergy with green buildings and this interrelation negates the need to just focus on green building when it comes to making an impact on climate change. However, this is not to say that some aspects of the SDG’s do not deserve more focus as achieving one greatly aids in accomplishing another. Goal (6), clean water and sanitation for example, is fundamental in achieving both Goal (1), “to end poverty in all its forms everywhere”. Thus, we are honoured to host the World Green Building Council’s Africa Regional Network (ARN) meeting of Green Building Councils in Africa during the summit. We look to unravel the hurdles that have delayed green buildings from gaining the momentum they should have by now. For a continent that has not built most of the cities and infrastructure that will be needed by 2030, where 78% of the population are youth, and where climate change effect will be felt the most, the urgency to do it and do it right now is colossal. The challenge is not insurmountable as we know exactly what each one of us needs to do, as the late prof Wangari Maathai said “you cannot protect the environment unless you empower people, you inform them, and you help them understand that these resources are their own, that they must protect them.” The Africa Green Building Summit (AGBS) is our biggest, boldest annual event yet as a green building council (GBC) as most peers are known globally. As with our previous annual events, we offer a training day with this year’s offerings being GreenStar Accredited Professional – Communities® and IFC EDGE® multi-unit residential. The Summit will offer unparalleled green economy opportunities for us to harness. Become a champion! 9 AFRICA GREEN BUILDING CONFERENCE Col. (Rtd.)
