waterfalls
An easy excursion
To get to the Menta dam: from Gambarie,
follow the SS183 for 2 kms direction Reggio Calabria,
then turn to the left at first crossroads, direction
Montalto. After about 4 kms turn to the right at the
crossroads and follow the Menta dam sign. Once
reaching the dam, follow the sloping hairpin bends as
far as the end of the asphalted road.

Drop: about 200 m.
Length: 1h15 to go
and 1h30 to return.

Red and white
(clearly shown as far as
point n.2 on the map).

Drinking water:
A small spring
at the departure.
1 Cross the stream and follow the red and white
signed path on the right. Go down through the path
that crosses some Pine and Beech groves.
Recommendation:
Be careful to not to
slipper when you go up
the river bed again and
do not risk to climb the
rocks of the waterfall.
2 Half way, at the natural viewpoint, you can
enjoy a spectacular sight of the waterfalls.
Suggested period:
Spring, summer, autumn.
3 When you get to the stream, go up through
the river-bed for about 10 min. following the
signs. Be careful not to slide on the wet rocks.
Once you arrive you can swim in the emerald
green natural pool...
4 For the return, follow the same path you
took on the way.
What to see:
The Menta dam (1.370 m)
that regulates the
homonymous strean.
Vegetation:
Pines, beech, Sanbucine
orchids (yellow and
violet), papilionatae
orchids, euphorbias,
brooms...

A ring path
around the highest
Aspromonte point
from which you
can admire
the Etna and the
Eolie islands...
To get to the basis of Montalto: from
Gambarie, follow the SS183 for 2 km Reggio
Calabria direction, turn to the left then at the first
crossroads direction Montalto. After about 15 km
(the asphalt in some places is not in excellent conditions), just before getting to the base of Montalto,
one crosses a roads that turns to the left (San Luca
Polsi direction). Park in front of the crossroads and
go towards the fence.

1 After passing the fence there is no sign
of the beginning of the path; you have to do
the best you can... It is necessary to go diagonally towards the right, as if you are following for some metres the hand of a clock that
shows 12h05.
It is there that the excursion begins. When
you reach a grove of young Beeches it will be
necessary to gradually change the direction
going down slightly towards the left.
Soon a bit better traced a path will appear
and you will reach a spring called Pantani di
Montalto.
Keep going for about 10 min. you will get to a
grazing; once crossed it and going straightforward you will reach a small viewpoint.
Looking down you can see the continuation of
the path going down on the left.
Take then the ridge and go down as far as
reaching the dirt track that passes in front of
the rangers forest barracks, called shelter
Giardini (reference forestale on the map). It is
important to find the track because the shelter is only the point of reference.
2 Once you find the track follow it on the
left. About 20 min. later you will reach a small
trough beside which there is a spring and a
picnic area.
3 About 30 min. later walking you will have
to leave the track and to take a bend the / / /

At the level of the fence,

on the map.
Arrival:
At few metres to
the departure,
on an asphalted road.
Drop: About 300m.
Length:
1h20 on descent
as far as the forest
rangers shelter, 2h40
on slope as far as the
top and 20 min. on
descent to reach the car.
System of signs:
Totally inexsistent on
the first part of the path,
then red-white-red on
the slope to Montalto.

Drinking water:
Small spring just after
the departure but
it is hard to fill the flask;
fountain just before
starting the slope.
Recommendation:
To have a strong sense
of orientation.
Suggested periods:
The whole year.

15 min. later: be careful because you
have to leave the main path and come back
to the left following the red-white-red hardly
visible system of signs. Go up following the
slope as far as reaching the old barbed wire
fencing.
Keep on going beside the fencing until getting to a viewpoint where you can admire
both the Ionian sea (on the right) and the
Thyrrenian sea(on the left). Keep going up
as far as the top marked out by the statue of
the Redeemer.
5 To return, go down again for about 20 min.
to the opposite side through an arranged path
(wood banister).
6 Once you get to the ashalted road follow
it on the left to find your car located a few
metres away.

waterfalls
An excursion
through the
undergrowths,
in a very damp
universe, thick
with ferns, musk
and lianas...
To get to the viewpoint: from Taurianova take
the SS 111 Oppido Mamertina or Molòchio direction. Just after crossing a stream called Marro,
follow the Molòchio-Trepitò direction. Once over
Molòchio keep the Trepitò direction. The viewpoint
is on one of the last bends, before reaching the
village: 812 m. above sea level (see the map).

1 Take the path that is on the left of the
viewpoint and go down as far as the stream.
2 Just a few metres before the stream, you
will see a big rock (picture) that shows, with
two arrows, the two paths that lead to the
waterfalls.The one on the right, (crossing the
stream and turning at once to the left) leads
to the Galasia waterfall, the one on the left
(without crossing the stream at the Mundu
waterfall).
Departure/Arrival:
The viewpoint which
is in one of the sharp
bends. Possibility
to park within the bend.
Drop: About 500 m.
Length:
1 hour from the car park
to the Galasia waterfall;
1 hour for the return
to the rock. 20 min. from
the rock to reach
the Mundu waterfall
and 40 min. for
the return as far as
the car park.
Particularity: the going
is on descent and the
return is uphill !
System of signs:
Red-white-red.

Drinking water:
Waterfalls.
Recommendations:
It is advisable not to
stand too long
at the Mundu waterfall
because of the risk
of landslide.
It is advisable to start with the one on the
right that is longer.

3 After the slope, in a small level part in
the grove there are three different possible
paths. Take the one in the centre that goes
down.
4 For the return, once you reach the waterfall, take the same path as far as the big rock
and go towards the Mundu waterfall.
5 From there take again the path as far as
reaching the rock and keep going up using
the same path you took on the way.
