Our Camping Trip
Every summer we go camping. We load up the van and go
to a campground. We stay in a big green tent. We sleep in
sleeping bags. All of our cooking is on a camp stove. We eat
on a picnic table.
We have a campfire every morning and night to get warm.
Sometimes we even cook our food over the fire. I like to roast
hot dogs on sticks.
Every night we make a special dessert. First you put out
graham crackers. Then you put chocolate on top. Next you
toast marshmallows on sticks. Then you put it all together.
The dessert is called Some Mores. That’s because you always
want some more.
We go on hikes together. I like walking to the waterfall
best. Sometimes I get tired of walking. Dad always starts
singing songs when we get tired. The next thing you know,
we are back in camp.
At night, I can count about a million stars. And I hear
owls and other noises. Mom says they are bugs calling to
other bugs. Sometimes we fire flies. They light up just like
stars.
Chipmunks come to our camp during the day. One time
we saw a fox walking by. We are careful not to leave food
out. Some animal would take it. Our food isn’t good for wild
animals. It makes them sick.

Mom’s New Job
Yesterday my mom started her new job. Her job is to drive
a school bus every morning. She took driving classes to get
ready for her new job. She had to get a special license, too.
She wears a dark blue uniform with a yellow vest.
Now she has to get up even earlier than we do. She has to
be ready for work on time. Mom has to be on time or children
will be waiting for her. She does her best to get everyone to
school on time.
When I came down to the kitchen for breakfast yesterday,
dad and mom were eating cereal and drinking coffee together.
Since mom has to leave early, I knew she wouldn’t have time
to make my breakfast anymore. So I sat down and fixed
myself a bowl of cereal.
“Did you make my lunch, Mom?” I asked.
“I made it for you,” said Dad. “I made mom’s and mine,
too.”
“We’re all going to take turns making lunches,” Mom
said. “Next week you’ll get to make all three lunches.”
That afternoon when I came home from school, I smelled
something good. There was mom in the kitchen, taking
chocolate chip cookies out of the oven.
“I made a treat for our lunches tomorrow,” she said.
“Here, you may have one.”
“How was your second day on the job, Mom?” I asked.
“Just great, honey. I love my new job,” she said.

My Dress-Up Box
I like to pretend, do you? We have a dress- up box at our
house. I use it when I pretend. There are clothes and hats and
shoes in it. There are some old Halloween costumes.
The dress- up box is like magic. It helps me be anything I
want. I can pretend I am in the army. All I do is put on some
army clothes and my dad’s old hat. I pretend to be a fireman
when I wear a yellow coat and black boots.
Sometimes my friend Eric comes over. We both pretend
we are cowboys or robots. Sometimes we explore the back
yard. We pretend it is the first time anyone has seen it.
Sometimes we find new treasures.
My sister Lisa likes to pretend, too. She puts on a long
purple dress and a gold crown. Then she plays like she’s
queen of the world. She was a pretty bossy queen.
Once she put on some gloves and a hat. She carried one of
my grandma’s purses. She rang our doorbell. When my
mother opened the door, Lisa said she was our new neighbor.
So my mother pretended, too. She asked if Lisa wanted to
come in for tea.
Playing dress- up is fun.

Mornings at Our House
In the morning, while it is still dark, we all wake up. Dad
and mom wake up first. Their radio starts playing. Then dad
comes out into the hall and knocks on our door. “Time for
school, boys,” he yells.
Then I hear water running while mom takes a shower.
When she’s done, she knocks on our door. That’s because she
knows we’re still in bed. My dad climbs in the shower. He
sings country songs. I put the pillow over my head. My eyes
finally open when I hear the hair dryer.
Then my dad runs downstairs to the kitchen. He puts the
coffee maker on. He makes the radio even louder. Mom taps
on the bathroom door about that time. “TJ? Leave some hot
water for your brother!” she says.
My brother Mario is the last one up. He’s a slowpoke.
Finally we are all in the kitchen together. We have apple
juice and Cheerios for breakfast. Dad gulps his coffee and
asks mom if she’s ready to go.
She looks at my brother and me. She tells us, “Don’t
forget to do your homework right when you get home. We are
going to church tonight.”
Mom and dad leave together. I look at the clock. In five
minutes Mario and I have to be at the bus stop.
“Come on, Mario,” I say. I stuff our lunches into our
backpacks. We run out the door just in time. I see the yellow
school bus coming. But we’re not late.

If I Had a Robot
If I had a robot, he would do everything I don’t like to do.
First, he’d brush his teeth. Then, he’d get dressed for school. I
would stay in bed.
He would make my lunch. He knows pizza and cookies
are my favorite. My robot would carry my books and lunch
for me. He might even carry my friend’s books.
At school, my robot would tell me all the right answers.
He would take my spelling test for me and get them all right. I
hate spelling. During recess, my robot would do extra credit
while I played.
I would eat the lunch my robot made. Everyone would
want to trade for my cookies. I’d make my robot eat
everything I didn’t like.
When school was over, my robot would do my homework.
It would be perfect and in his best handwriting. I would play
outside with my dog.
After dinner, my robot would do my chores. He would
pick up my clothes. He would empty the garbage. He would
feed the cat and the dog. I would watch TV and play chess
with my dad. My robot would bring me a big piece of
chocolate cake.
My robot would take a bath and wash his hair. Then my
robot would brush his teeth. I would hug my dad and kiss my
mom goodnight. My robot would have to hug my little
brother.

I Want to Fly in Space
When I grow up I want to travel in space. I have my plan
all worked out. First I will go to college. Next I’ll learn how
to fly planes. I’ll fly very fast planes. I’ll fly faster than the
speed of sound. When I can fly planes very well, I’ll learn
how to fly space ships.
I’ll get to wear a silvery space suit and live inside a space
ship. I’ll be inside the space ship when we blast into space.
When I’m up there, I’ll watch the sun and moon come up
every day. I’ll be so close to the stars that I can count them.
Maybe I will see other space ships. They can wave as they
go by. I will float around whenever I want. It will be just like
flying.
I’ll get to put on my special space suit and walk in space.
I’ll look down and see the green and blue earth far below. I
might even be able to see where I live. The whole world will
be watching me. I’ll tell them what I see.
When I get to the moon, I’ll walk all across the surface. I
think it will be dusty and crunchy. I’ll pick up samples of
moon rocks to bring back. I want to drive all over the moon in
a little dune buggy. I’ll plant the American flag on the moon. I
might even see some little green aliens running around.
I can’t wait to fly in space.

Cleaning Your Plate
At our house we have a rule. Clean your plate. A clean
plate means you can have dessert. You can also watch TV
after dinner. It’s a pretty good rule.
My dad cooks dinner. He’s a good cook. He makes lots of
good dinners. My parents don’t make me eat things I hate. But
my mom says I still have to taste everything. She says I’ll
learn to like new foods if I try them. So far I don’t like salad
and tomatoes and broccoli.
Well, I had dinner at Seth’s yesterday. They don’t have
any rules about eating like we do at our house. They even
have the TV on while they eat dinner. At our house it’s never
on during dinner. I didn’t like anything at Seth’s except the
tuna and noodles. I didn’t like the salad or the pea soup. But
they said I could have dessert anyway. Dessert was apple pie
with ice cream.
I told my mom when I got home. I asked why I had to
clean my plate before TV or dessert. She just looked at me
and said, “Well, everybody has different rules. When you eat
at Seth’s, you can follow their rules. When Seth eats here, he
can follow our rules.”
I guess rules aren’t so bad. Sometimes my dad cooks
things I like. Tonight he’s baking brownies for dessert.

Sleeping Over
I’m so excited! Next weekend I get to have my friend Ally
come and spend the night. We’re going to sleep in sleeping
bags on the floor in my room. The longest Ally has been at
my house was when I had my birthday party.
I asked my mom if Ally could sleep over. Then, my mom
talked to her mom. It took a long time! Finally everyone said
it was all right. Her mother says I can sleep over at her house
the next time. We will try to get along well.
Ally and I have been best friends all this year at school.
We sit at the same table. We are in the same reading group.
We even ride on the same school bus. We both have brown
eyes and brown hair.
We even like the same things. Our favorite game is twoup at recess. We even like banana sandwiches.
Ally is going to come over this Saturday. She is going to
bring her Barbie and all her outfits. We’re going to go for a
walk with my mom and dad. Then we’re going out for dinner.
I want a hamburger and a milkshake. Mom said we could rent
a movie and stay up very late. I think we’ll have banana
sandwiches for a snack.
In the morning, my dad’s going to make French toast.
Ally can play all day. We have to take Ally home before
supper. I can’t wait! It will be like having a sister for the
weekend.

All my favorite colors are in the rainbow. I like the colors

apples. The best type of candy is a red gum drop. A red rose is
the best flower.
Blue makes me feel like taking a nap. I love my fluffy
blue and white bed with clouds all over it. I love the sky and
the blue ocean. Blue bubble gum is the best flavor of ice
cream.
Yellow makes me feel like jumping rope. I love the sun. I
love the full moon. I love yellow flowers in the summer.
Yellow tulips are my favorite in the spring. Yellow bananas
are a great snack. I love fuzzy yellow ducklings.
Green makes me feel like climbing a tree. My favorite
place to go is a park filled with trees and grass. I love to run in
the green grass. I love green apples and pears.
Purple makes me hungry! I feel like eating purple grapes.
I love eggplant. My favorite backpack is purple. Barney is my
favorite TV show.

“I made it for you,” said Dad. “I made mom’s and mine,
too.”
“We’re all going to take turns making lunches,” Mom
said. “Next week you’ll get to make all three lunches.”
That afternoon when I came home from school, I smelled
something good. There was mom in the kitchen, taking
chocolate chip cookies out of the oven.
“I made a treat for our lunches tomorrow,” she said.
“Here, you may have one.”
“How was your second day on the job, Mom?” I asked.
“Just great, honey. I love my new job,” she said.

Our Camping Trip
Every summer we go camping. We load up the van and go
to a campground. We stay in a big green tent. We sleep in
sleeping bags. All of our cooking is on a camp stove. We eat
on a picnic table.
We have a campfire every morning and night to get warm.
Sometimes we even cook our food over the fire. I like to roast
hot dogs on sticks.
Every night we make a special dessert. First you put out
graham crackers. Then you put chocolate on top. Next you
toast marshmallows on sticks. Then you put it all together.
The dessert is called Some Mores. That’s because you always
want some more.
We go on hikes together. I like walking to the waterfall
best. Sometimes I get tired of walking. Dad always starts
singing songs when we get tired. The next thing you know,
we are back in camp.
At night, I can count about a million stars. And I hear
owls and other noises. Mom says they are bugs calling to
other bugs. Sometimes we fire flies. They light up just like
stars.
Chipmunks come to our camp during the day. One time
we saw a fox walking by. We are careful not to leave food
out. Some animal would take it. Our food isn’t good for wild
animals. It makes them sick.
