D A I L Y N E W S P A P E R LIFE WITHIN THE COLONIES Monday, February 7th 1754 by Makenzie, Kaylee, and Nicole Britain Declares War on France Hero of the Day George Washington, the first to attack the French at Fort Necessity has become our hero of the day. Washington, a brave and courageous man was proven at Fort Necessity, when he showed the French that the British were not afraid to fight for their land. Washington is now back in Virginia and getting ready for his next journey and battle Benjamin Franklin’s Plan to Unite the Colonists Recently, Benjamin Franklin tried to unite the colonists in the Albany Plan of Union. This would be an easier way to fight off the French and the Spanish. French rivalry is becoming evident to colonists as the Battle at Fort Duquesne takes place. General Braddock was assigned to driving the French out of the Ohio River valley. This was not Braddock’s typical battlefield where the men were lined up, in bright suits and shot at each other bluntly. This battle was fought by the frontier way of life as the French and Spanish hid in the woods, they easily picked off the British soldiers in their brightly colored uniforms marching in straight lines. Braddock was recently killed during this battle along with about 1,000 of his men. Now, Britain has officially declared war on France. Each of the colonies refused to give up their rights and the plan was dropped. This plan would give the legislature power to govern all the colonies, tax land owners, train the troops, and watch over trade. Pitt Takes Charge William Pitt is so skilled that he can over look the war although he is hundreds of miles away . He also knew who to pick for skilled commanders. For example Jeffery Amherst and James Wolfe . Pitt wanted a clear path to the Western territories, and also wanted to conquer French Canada. He sent soldiers to North America with the two commanders he chose Amherst and Wolfe. The two commanders recaptured the fortress at Louisbourg from the French. Another British group of settlers captured Fort Frontenac, and also another the British force captured Fort Duquesne. The Loss of Wolfe QUEBEC, THE CAPITAL OF NEW FRANCE WAS AN UNEXPECTED BATTLE GROUND. THE BRITISH FOUND AN UNGUARDED PATH UP ONTO THE HILL. THEY DECIDED TO ATTACK AT NIGHT SO THEY COULD SURPRISE THE FRENCH. THEIR SURPRISE ATTACK WAS A SUCCESS AND THEY DEFEATED THE FRENCH. BUT WITH A SAD LOSS OF JAMES WOLFE. KING GEORGEʼS DECISION TAKES TOLL ON CITIZENS To stop the fighting the British government put a stop to the westward expansion. In the Proclamation of 1763 King George III said the Appalachian Mts. were going to be the temporary western boundaries for all of the colonies. This angered many colonists especially those who owned land companies on the other side of the boundaries. French and Indian War Reached a New Verdict! The French lost a surprising attack in the Battle of Quebec. In the years following the battle, the Treaty of Paris was created. Now the French are allowed only their sugar plantations in the West Indies, and are forced to give up Canada to Britain. The continent is now divided by the Mississippi River separating Great Britain and Spain The Iroquois Alliance is Formed PONTIAC MAKES A PLAN Chief Pontiac belongs to the Ottawa village. British moved in and started threatening his villages way of life. Pontiac made a plan to bring all Indian groups together. They attacked the British forts one one. Pontiac then found out that the French signed the Treaty of Paris and so he stopped his attacks He was then attacked in return by the colonists. The Iroquois Confederacy... was the most powerful group of the Native Americans. The nations Mohawk, Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, and Oneida were all established in 1750. The Iroquois kept their independence by trading with the British and French. The British made their way into the Ohio valley, and the Iroquois came under pressure. British ended up with trading rights and the Iroquois became allies, unwillingly. The British and French are no longer equal anymore after the Iroquois granted the British trading rights. Britain has the upper hand. Taking Sides The Native Americans and the French have become allies, becoming interested in only trading fur and not in taking over the Native American lands like the British were. The French have been patient with the Natives ways, in fact, we have some of the French fur traders marrying the Native women. The Natives have been assisting the French when fighting against the British. They have been attacking the British forts one by one.
