Parks and Reserves Guide PARKS AND RESERVES OF IPSWICH www.ipswich.qld.gov.au EXPLORE IPSWICH PARKS AND RESERVES Ipswich City Council provides over 550 parks and reserve areas covering in excess of 8,500 hectares to explore and offer an extensive range of facilities to suit all leisure and recreational needs. Picnic and BBQ shelters, sporting grounds, natural areas, walking tracks, boat ramps, family water play space, scenic lookouts and memorials are available for use seven days a week. Colleges Crossing Recreation Reserve FEATURED PARKS AND GARDENS Robelle Domain features more than 11 kilometres of boardwalks, walking and cycle tracks, playgrounds, zero depth water play and one of the largest free public swimming lagoons in Australia – Orion Lagoon. Kholo Gardens offers almost 40 hectares of stunning grounds, a picturesque church, charming Queenslander style function centre and walking tracks that lead down to the banks of the Brisbane River. Queens Park boasts an impressive array of playground facilities that are inspired by Ipswich’s coal mining history. Two additional free attractions include the Japanese themed Nerima Gardens and the Ipswich Nature Centre. Nerima Gardens Bob Gamble Park WATERSIDE AND WATER PLAY PARKS Most waterside parks within Ipswich feature boat ramp access for water activities such as canoeing and kayaking. Colleges Crossing Recreation Reserve, Shapcott Park, Richardson Park, Joseph Brady Park and Riverside Park are examples of great places to experience our waterways. Zero depth water play areas are located at Bob Gamble Park, close to Ipswich Central, and Robelle Domain on the eastern fringes of the city. Orion Lagoon also located at Robelle Domain offers an amazing free swimming lagoon. SPORTING FACILITIES Ipswich parks provide high quality sporting fields and facilities including skate spaces, courts, playing fields and cricket pitches that can be enjoyed by everyone. NATURE BASED RECREATION More than 7,330 hectares of bushland are available for low impact nature-based recreation. Activities include trail running, mountain biking, bushwalking, horse riding, swimming, fishing, orienteering, canoeing, kayaking, picnicking, camping and birdwatching. Commercial events, sporting events and private functions with over 100 people will require a permit. To preserve this environment for all park visitors and future generations, we need to work together. Sacred sites are very important to the Traditional Owners, as they provide a link between Country and personal identity and allow the passing on of cultural knowledge. Some of the sacred sites within Ipswich include quarry sites, traditional food resources, story places, pre-contact and historical camp sites, fighting grounds, ceremonial sites, bora rings and women’s business sites.
