Highway Robbery Half Term Family Fun

England’s highways were menaced by flashy, well dressed
criminals robbing the rich and keeping it all for themselves.

Margaret Cavendish was the first woman to
observe experiments at the Royal Society and
to print a substantial body of her work.

Remember Hercules Clay
Grateful for a divine vision which helped
his family escape cannon fire, 17th century Town
Mayor Hercules Clay began a tradition for an
annual service of thanksgiving to be held at St Mary
Magdalene Church. This year’s service, starting at
11.15am, will see re-enactors provide a colourful
guard of honour for attending dignitaries.To mark this
anniversary, Colonel Robert Overton’s Regiment will
stage a day of drill and living history at the National
Civil War Centre and musket fire at Newark Castle.

Under Siege: Armour and
Siege Warfare in the 17th Century
By the 17th century gunpowder weaponry had come to
radically affect the nature of warfare. On the battlefield
increasing numbers of men were equipped with firearms, and
the use of artillery and explosives in siege warfare led to new
designs of fortification. Join Keith Dowen, Assistant Curator
at the Royal Armouries to discover how armourers

Pikes and Plunder: Annual Civil War Festival
Over 300 civil war re-enactors will descend on Newark as the clock is turned back to the
mid-17th century for the 3rd Annual Pikes and Plunder Civil War Festival. The historic
Queen’s Sconce fort – built in 1644 - will be the stunning venue for musket fire and
fighting, whilst Newark Castle hosts major living history displays, recreating the dark
days when the besieged citizens of Newark struggled to cope with food shortages.
The National Civil War Centre will also stage exciting demonstrations to bring the
period vividly back to life. An exciting, educational and immersive way for all ages to
spend the Bank Holiday weekend. FREE admission to events at the Castle and Sconce.

Remembering a Revolution

Newark Morris Dancing and Folk
Play Festival
Nottinghamshire has strong connections to
Morris dancing and traditional folk plays,
some originating as early as the 15th
century. Morris Troupes from around the
Country will perform along with several
folk plays and folk music. A small market
will also be held along with various street
entertainments. The main event will be in
the Market Place but the Morris teams will
also perform around the town including the
Castle grounds.

Brass Bands in the
Castle & Brass Explosion
Relax in the summer sun and enjoy the sounds
of brass bands every Sunday in August.
Sunday 27th August will mark the finale to the
Town Council’s Sunday Brass Band Concerts for
2017. An afternoon of family entertainment with
food & drink, come along with a picnic and relax in
this fabulous venue. The evening will include a
series of Brass Band performances culminating in a
firework display. FREE admission.

Newark Half Marathon
The Eden Hall Spa Newark Half Marathon is
a flat, fast and scenic summer race.
It is limited to 1,500 entrants with a fun run
and entertainment for all the family. The race
is organised by four local running clubs in
support of Beaumond House Community
Hospice. Runners receive a Medal and a
T-Shirt. Entry for the 2017 race will be £25 with
a £2 discount available to British Athletics/
UKAA members.
