POSTPONED Joggers closes Parry Sound store

GRAVENHURST - For those who want to quit smoking, there
are two weeks until the deadline to register in the province-wide
Quit Smoking 2005 Contest. The grand prize of a Ford Mustang.
“The contest is geared to daily smokers who are thinking it’s
time to quit,” said Michael Kuntz, the tobacco project officer
with the Muskoka-Parry Sound Health Unit. “Maybe they have
already tried once or twice and are ready to try again. Last year
we had 268 local contest entrants. We’re sure we can beat that
number in 2005.”
To qualify smokers must quit from Feb. 1 to Mar. 1. Participants must enlist the help of a buddy to help keep them on track.
The Quit Smoking 2005 Contest is open to all Ontario residents who are daily smokers, 19 years of age or older. Smokers
can enter online at www.quitsmokingontario.ca or by mail.
Entries must be received by January 31 and smokers must
remain smoke free February 1 to March 1 inclusive to qualify for
the prizes.
Store hastily closed early this week,
some staff retained to pack up stock
PARRY SOUND - As of January
17, the sportswear store Joggers, in the Parry Sound Mall
closed permanently.
According to the mall’s manager, Bob Cardy, the store has
been there for the past nine
years and employed around five
part-time and full-time staff.
There is no word as to what will
take its place in the mall.
A representative for the
sportswear chain was unavailable for comment at press time.
The closure of Joggers comes
on the heals of an announcement in the first week of Janu-
ary that the company which
owns Saan stores filed for bankruptcy protection.
The Saan store is one of the
anchor tenants of the Parry
Sound Mall.
Currently in the local store
the are banners hung from the
ceiling announcing “store closing” and “liquidation sale.”
A company spokesperson told
the North Star last week that
the liquidation sale would continue until the end of March. At
that point a determination on
which stores would remain open
would be made.
The Saan store in the Parry Sound, like others across the country, is holding a liquidation sale until the end of March. A decision on which stores
will stay open will be made at that point.

ger. He then explained:
“Our drivers ed instructor is
always telling us to look in our
rearview mirrors. Develop your
‘hindsight’ as he calls it.”
Good neighbour
Whatever it’s called, it’s a
practice that’s appreciated. It’s
the sort of awareness that’s
essential to being a good neighbour, or good Samaritan, as the
Bible might call it. That story
was told by Jesus. (Luke 10:2937).
And he wasn’t suggesting
that neighbourliness is something to be put into practice
only in times of crisis or emergency.
PARRY SOUND - The popular
kids television show, Big Comfy
Couch, has hit the road as one big
wacky, live, interactive show - and
it’s coming here, tonight, January
19.
There will be one show only at
the Charles W. Stockey Centre.
This show has been bringing
smiles to children’s faces across
the country. It encourages participation from children and even
parents, who have been known to
join the amusing and exciting
characters on stage, in a fun, educational, and stimulating environment.
All the characters will be there:
Loonette the little clown-girl and
her best friend Molly the dolly,
Granny Garbanzo, Major Bedhead
the clown courier, the Governor of
Clowntown and a host of colourful
clowns from Clowntown. All these
lovable characters show up on
Loonette’s journey where she
wakes up on the Big Comfy Couch
only to find a big forget-me-not
bow on her finger. Problem is, she
can’t remember what she wasn’t
supposed to forget. After her everpopular Clock Stretch, Loonette
and Molly embark on their journey through Clowntown waltzing
into many crazy, wacky antics
along the way to the Festival of
Wiggles and Giggles and Goofy
Friends.
Big Comfy Couch Live on Stage
is complete with three set and
scenery changes, numerous costume changes, and a cast of eight
who play 12 characters. Based on
the award winning television
series, this production delivers an
action packed adventure that will
have the whole family up on their
feet singing and dancing.

As the car in front of us
slowed down we realized that it
doing so for us. It was letting us
pass. That sort of thing doesn’t
happen too often.
Usually people seem to be
just focussed on themselves as
they travel from point ‘A’ to
point ‘B’ along our roads and
highways.
But this car had noticed us
as we pulled up behind it on the
slush covered wintery road.
Cars and trucks were throwing
up long streamers of salty mist
that made visibility difficult.
So, as we passed, someone
commented about that little bit
of courtesy.
Of slowing down to let someone pass.
“Nice, isn’t it? That someone
would slow down? Most people
don’t even seem to notice the
cars behind them.?”
“Hindsight,” was the cryptic
comment of a teenage passen-

The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) has received an
application from the Six Star Snow Riders to construct a
bridge over the Blackstone River at the location shown on the
map below. The purpose of the proposal is to replace an
existing temporary bridge which is located approximately 200
meters downstream from the proposed permanent structure.
The proposed site is on Part of Lot 16, Concession VIII,
Geographic Township of Conger, now in the Township of The
Archipelago. The proposal involves the construction of a 12
foot wide steel bridge with a 85 foot span, with a minimum
height of 12 feet above the high water level in the navigable
channel of the Blackstone River. The proposal also requires
the construction of 200 m of trail to connect the new crossing
with the existing snowmobile trail (OFSC Trail #26).
You are invited to direct any inquiries, comments or requests
regarding the proposal to Mr. Al McMorran, President of the
Six Star Snow Riders (proponent) or Laura Knight Heidman
(MNR). Comments must be received within the 30-day
comment period, which expires on February 11 2005.
The proposal is being planned in accordance with a Category
B project under the Class Environmental Assessment for
MNR Resource Stewardship and Facility Development
Projects. A Notice of Completion will be provided only to
parties who have provided input or requested further notice.
MNR may proceed to authorize the project without issuing a
further general notice.
