What does the National Curriculum
state?
National curriculum aims to ensure that children;
• ‘spell new words correctly and have plenty of practice in
spelling them…. Including exception words and
homophones.
• Spell words as accurately as possible using their phonic
knowledge and other knowledge of spelling, such as
morphology (the study of the form of words) and
etymology (the study of origins and development of
words).
• Are supported in understanding and applying the contexts
of word structure.
• Spell words they have not yet been taught by using what
they have learnt about how spelling works in English.
Why
Spelling?
A robust, fast paced, systematic spelling programme designed for children in
years 2-6 (once they are fluent in reading and have secure phonics
knowledge)
Meets the expectations of the national curriculum, giving your children the
best chance of success in the national tests as well as preparing them to be
able to spell effectively when writing.
Continuous rigorous cycle of assessment ensures that pupils remain on track
and teachers can identify aspects they can achieve success.
