Between You and Me
Passover, A Story for the Ages
By: Rabbi Katie Bauman
Passover is the oldest continually observed holiday in the
world. This month, when we sit around a table and retell the
story of our people’s journey out of slavery, we are links in a
chain that is among the longest in history. What is so special
about Passover that it has inspired this kind of commitment?
I think there are two primary reasons: 1) the story we tell
and 2) the way we tell it.
The way we tell it... is in a really good way. Questions,
songs, games, symbols, body movements – every kind of
teaching and learning is exemplified during a Seder. It is
the best possible classroom, where we hear this story at
the feet of our parents and by the sides of our friends. The
emotion that is attached to this kind of storytelling runs
so deep that it is inextricable from our identity as we age.
The story we tell... is a really good story. The Exodus
from Egypt is foundational to who we are as Jews. It is
from this story that our relationship with God flows. We
were taken for worthless, and then God redeemed us and
we became an am segulah, a treasured people. This story
is also foundational to who we are as human beings. How
many times have we felt trapped and then found that waters parted and we could pass through into a new kind of
existence? This experience happens to everyone, so the
story is a metaphor for our constant trials, as well as a
historical record of a one-time occurrence.
Passover can be a return to the past, a spiritual renewal,
and a moral awakening all at the same time. It can engage
the very young and the very old. It can feed our souls as
much as it does our bodies. And applying our creative energy to this holiday is an essential part of the experience.
Because of its incredible combination of fluidity and substance, Passover will continue to be not only relevant, but
meaningful. Each Seder table becomes part of our legacy
and our destiny.
Looking forward to celebrating with you at Temple’s
many Passover events!
“Passover can be a return to the past, a spiritual renewal, and a moral
awakening all at the same time.”

Seth will become a Bar Mitzvah on
April 8. A seventh grader at Lausanne
Collegiate School, Seth’s Mitzvah
Project focuses on fighting hunger.
During a school service project, he
packed food for at-risk children and

hungry every day. He became inspired
to help make a difference and plans
to donate his time and a portion of his
Bar Mitzvah gift money to the MidSouth Food Bank to support programs
focused on kids. Additionally, Seth is
volunteering with the Food for Kids
BackPack Program, which provides
a backpack filled with nutritious,
child-friendly food for children to

volunteered his time to pack meals
with Stop Hunger Now for children and
families in Haiti. Seth is the grandson
of Vicki & Gary Gibson and Marcia &
Jay Menuskin.
Son of Lauren & Allen Cohn, Marcus
will become a Bar Mitzvah on April
22. Marcus is in seventh grade at

treats for foster animals. Marcus was
inspired by his family’s rescue pitbull
named Grizzly. He is the grandson
of Sandra & David Halpern, JoAnne
Halpern, and Suzanne & William Cohn,
both of blessed memory.
Daughter of Tricia & Elliot Kiersky,
Shea will become a Bat Mitzvah on

The Counting of the Omer, the Jewish act of counting the 49-day period
from the second day of Passover to Shavuot, is a time of contemplation

the Torah and Judaism; to learn more about ourselves and our neighbors,
and to strengthen our community through learning. During the Counting of

Remember When…
Rabbi Max Samfield’s family Haggadah serves as a memento from the
early 1900s while emphasizing the timelessness of the Passover story.
Note the handwritten names for each section of the story… some things
never change!

Call 901.937.2779 or email [email protected] for hours.
Temple Israel is a sanctuary for prayer and inspiration, a vibrant center for Jewish learning, and a congregational home for
living Torah. We are a source of strength and a force for good for Reform Jews, the greater community, and the world.
