CALENDAR TERM 1, 2015

Pursuing excellence for the glory of God
TEMPLE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE
Volume 10, Issue 1
Friday, February 6, 2015 Dear Bethany Campus Community,
Welcome to the 2015 school year and a very
special welcome to all the new students and new
families who have joined us this year.
The scripture for this term is very well known
and is from John 14. It is the last supper, Jesus
has washed His disciples feet and shared with them that He
would be betrayed. He encourages His disciples with the
words “Don’t be troubled. You trust God now trust in Me.
There are many rooms in my Father’s home, and I am going
to prepare a place for you.” The disciples were confused and
did not understand where Jesus was going. Jesus replies “I
Am the Way, The Truth and The Life. No one can come to
the Father except through me.” We currently live in a society
that stresses the importance of political correctness. Jesus
stating that we can only come into a relationship with God
through him would be offensive to many non-Christians as he
really states that it is an exclusive faith, not all paths lead to
God, it is only through Jesus our Lord and Saviour. At
Temple we believe the truth of God’s word and it is not for us
to pick and choose the sections we like or don’t like. We take
on board all of God’s word, coming into a relationship with
God through Christ, led by His Holy Spirit.
The year has begun really well and I have been really
encouraged with how well so many of our new students have
settled into the life of the school. Community and having a
sense of belonging are really important to us. We trust and
pray that every student would feel encouraged being part of
the Temple community.
I do realise that this is not always the case and that at times
situations arise that are difficult. It is really important that as
parents you connect with the school early if you have any
concerns. We will always endeavor to deal with concerns
sensitively. Please do not assume that everything your child
shares at home is something the school is aware of. A quick
phone call or email can make a significant difference. Parents
can connect with the Student Services Office if you have any
concerns. So often the situation can be dealt with easily and
sensitively if we are aware of it before it is allowed to escalate
over time. This Newsletter contains a number of pages with
details on how the Student Services Office operates.
Traffic & Carpark Rules
Please read the information sheet in this Newsletter to avoid
receiving Expiation fines and Demerit points.
Camps
The Year 12 and Year 10 students have completed their
camps, and by all reports have had a great time. There will be
articles and photos in the next newsletter.
Swimming Carnival
Well done to all the students and staff involved in the
Swimming Carnival and a special thank you to Mr Joshua
Lloyd and his team on the excellent organization of the
carnival. It was a beautiful day weatherwise, and a great
community building time. Congratulations to all the Age
Champions for your fantastic effort, and to West House on
winning and getting your name on the Trophy, back to back.
Swimming Carnival results and photos are included in this
Newsletter.

Congratulations to Year 8s Bora Thach,
Shaun Chan, Joel Cubberley and Kane
Cope who were selected to play Indoor
Soccer at the National Futsal Championship in Sydney from January 10—15
this year. With Bora as team Captain,
the boys displayed an impressive effort,
representing the state in the U13 SA
Futsal, demonstrating an excellent attitude in terms of team work, discipline
and courage. This year is the first year that SA has joined in at the National
level in U13. The team may not have taken the Championship trophy, but they
played hard and gave it their all!
The next event for the boys will be at the National SACSA Soccer Carnival in
May, and this time they will compete at the Gold Coast, Queensland, representing South Australia.

Laptops
As students in Years 7 to 12 receive their hire laptops, the IT Department will be going through
some guidelines as to how they can be looked after. Parents and carers can help as well by being
aware of these guidelines and then supporting their child/children in following them:

Laptops really need to stay in their case at all times – the case has been designed to allow full use of the laptop
without needing to remove it. The cases are very sturdy and will protect the laptops from moderate impact/
drops.

Laptops need to be charged at home each night, since charging for hundreds of laptops cannot be provided at
school. Students should see coming to school with a charged laptop the same as arriving with the right books
and stationery for the day.

Laptops should not be used on or while waiting for the bus or train. If students are seen with expensive devices
on public transport, they can be put at risk by becoming targets for theft. Instead, laptops should stay inside
school bags to and from school.

If something breaks, or anything else goes wrong, inform the school. Spare laptops can be provided while broken ones are fixed. We see the laptops as an essential tool for students, the quicker we can get them back to
using one, the better.

Back up is essential. If something happens to a laptop it is not always possible to recover data. Students should
make copies of important documents and assignments. Don’t rely on a USB stick as they can often fail. Portable/external hard drives are more reliable. Always have at least two copies of work that is important.

If a laptop is physically broken (for example, a cracked screen), there will be a cost to get it repaired. If repairs
are needed, you will be sent a letter to let you know the cost and how to pay.
If you have questions regarding the laptops, either visit the information page at laptops.templecc.sa.edu.au or email
[email protected] and the team will do their best to get back to you quickly!
Please note that Year 7 Laptops will be given out to parents/caregivers at the Laptop Information & Collection Session to be held on Wednesday February 18 at 5.30pm.

I am greatly blessed with a
wonderful team of leaders. This
will be our ninth year working
together as a team and it has been
fantastic to see the growth that has
occurred over this time.
The primary focus of the Year
Level Coordinators is to offer
support in the area of Student
Development. This includes the
organisation of activities to help
build positive relationships in
their Year Level, the provision of
pastoral care, monitoring of
student progress and assisting in
developing strategies to both
encourage positive behaviour and
improve negative behaviour. In
doing so, they will liaise with the
Assistant Principal – Student
Development as well as our
Student Mentors along with Care
Group teachers. The Year Level
Coordinator is an excellent first
port of call for parents with
questions, comments or concerns
about their child’s progress at
School, and they welcome your
call or email.
We look forward to the very
positive impact our Coordinators
will have on the life of the School
this year.
2015 will be a very exciting year
and we trust in God’s continued
presence, leading and guiding.

Uniform Matters
It has been noted that there are a number of summer dresses that are not meeting the uniform
code in relation to length. Girls summer dresses are required to be “Floor length when
kneeling and no longer than 14cm below the knee” as per the uniform policy in the front
of your child’s planner. Please make sure your daughter’s summer dress is the correct length,
and hems are altered, if they need to be.
Students are to wear a cross-trainer or proper sports shoes with the PE Uniform. Vans, casual
sneakers, slip on shoes and velcro straps are not suitable for PE.

Head Prefects
Deputy Head Prefects
Please note: incorrect uniform attracts a consequence of a lunchtime detention.
Students who continue to wilfully disobey school rules in regards to Uniform may receive
automatic After School Detentions on each occasion they are in breach of the school rules.
After School Detentions
An After School detention is given when a student has received three lunchtime detentions or
as a result of a more serious behavioural issue.
The After School Detention is scheduled on a Wednesday afternoon between 3.15pm and
4.00pm.

Prefects
In most cases, students who receive an After School Detention are advised by way of a personal notification given out in Care Group and their name is listed in the Student Notices as a
reminder. A copy of the Student Notices is posted each day in the SSO. It is the student’s
responsibility to check Student Notices if they miss Care Group and to take the notification home to parents.
A further notification will be mailed home as a courtesy to parents prior to the day of the After School Detention. An SMS will be sent to parents where a notification will not arrive by
post in sufficient time.
If the student has a medical appointment or a work commitment, parents may write a note in
the Planner or telephone the school to so advise. Once parents have contacted the school,
their child is to see Mr Hudson to negotiate another afternoon in the same week.

School Day
Please report absences and lateness by phoning the SSO direct on 8256 9624 or by SMS on
0459 176 937 before 9.15am. This mobile number is a virtual number and only accepts SMS
messages.
Lateness
The morning routine of the school is very important to how quickly staff and students settle
into the day.
Students who are late to Care Group may not be marked on the Roll and miss important information distributed in Care Group. Students who are late to class disrupt the teacher and fellow
classmates.
The first bell goes at 8.30am. At this time students should have organised all of their materials
for lessons up to recess time and be on their way to Care Group.
The bell for start of Care Group goes at 8.35am. Students arriving after the 8.35am bell are
LATE.
A good morning routine at home including time for breakfast generally means a student is in a
good frame of mind and prepared for the day.
Ongoing lateness due to public transport and traffic is not considered a legitimate reason for
lateness. Students are to plan their travel to ensure they are at school in time to prepare for the
day ahead.
The consequence for lateness is : 3 x late in one week = a Lunchtime Detention. Ongoing lateness for no good reason may incur automatic After School Detention.

SCHOOL FEES
Fee statements were posted to all families last week. Please contact Denise Koning on 8256 9631 if you have not
received yours.
Unless you have an agreed payment plan in place, Instalment 1 fees will be due by this Friday (February 6). We appreciate your commitment to having fees paid on time.
If you do not have a payment plan but wish to set one up please contact the office on 8405 0921
The school appreciates that, from time to time, urgent family matters arise leading to lateness.
In such cases, parents should sms the school ahead of time to advise of lateness and the reason
OR a note should be placed in the School Planner to be shown to SSO Staff on arrival. The
SSO staff will provide a note to the student to be shown to the teacher upon entry to class.
The result of no communication from a parent may mean a student receives a consequence.
Appointments
Every effort should be made to arrange appointments outside of school time. In the event this
is not possible, a note in the Student Planner should support late arrival or early departure. The
note is to be shown to the SSO Staff at the time of signing in/out. Early departure should coincide with change of lessons. A note in the School Planner will need to be produced to the subject teacher in order for a student to be released from class.
Please be advised the school does not recognise attending driving lessons or sitting driving
tests as a legitimate reason for absenteeism. This is to be done in the students own time.
Locks and Lockers
All students are to use a school issued lock and have been allocated a locker. Students have
been advised as to their responsibilities in terms of use and care.
Students are to report damage to lockers and damage or tampering with locks immediately to
Mr Hudson.
There is a range of consequences in place for wilful damage and students who fail to follow
school procedure resulting in damage. This extends to cost of repairs or replacement.

Subject to the existence of a medical emergency, ambulance transport will be provided
to the nearest appropriate place of medical aid. Benefits apply only whilst the student
is:
in attendance at normal school activities during normal school hours

participating in a formal school activity either at or away from school during
normal school hours (for example Inter-school sports and school excursions)
where parents are not required to be in attendance.
The Ambulance Insurance does not cover attendance resulting from non-school
related incidents (for example diabetes, asthma, substance abuse), non-emergency
or elective transport, travel between home and school.
The school has a duty of care for all students. In a medical situation which is outside
the scope of School First Aid Officers and where the School has been unable to establish contact with either parents or emergency persons supplied by parents, the Student
Services Office will contact the Principal (or the designated member of School Leadership in his absence) to seek permission to call for an ambulance.
In such a situation, the student is released into the care of the hospital to which the student is transported. Hospital staff will continue to try and contact a family member.
Student Driver and Passenger Forms
Student Driver and Passenger Forms are available from the SSO for students in Years
11 and 12. Parents are asked to fill out all information as required and return to Mrs
Tracy Garton, Student Services Office, as a matter of priority. Failure to hand in the
required forms will mean a student will be banned from driving to and from school.
Please note the Student Driver and Student Passenger forms only cover driving to and
from school.
The School does not permit students to drive to excursions, camps, and other school
organised activities except in extenuating circumstances. A written request is to be
made by the parent prior to the event. A clear indication is to be given if siblings are to
be transported at this time. Students will not be permitted to carry other student passengers. All requests should be made to Mr Tony Hudson, Assistant Principal, Student
Development.
For the University student within your family / To the 2014 Year 12’s:
ES (Evangelical Students) is an interdenominational Christian group that can be found on almost
every university campus around the country as part of the larger AFES group (Australian
Fellowship of Evangelical Students). In South Australia, there is a camp to begin the year. This
provides students with the opportunity to make lots of friends before hitting campus and also think
about how their relationship with God may impact this new adventure.

Traffic Guidelines
It is the responsibility of both the school and parents to ensure that children are kept safe when walking near and
through the traffic before and after school. From discussions with the Salisbury Council and our Liaison Police Officer, Temple Christian College and Bethany Christian School have put a number of safety measures in place. These
measures include a roster of staff members at the various crossings, as well as supervision of the turning circles. As
the safety of our students are paramount, we ask that you adhere to the following traffic safety rules:
On Friday of Week 1, we took the whole school to the Salisbury Swimming Pool for our annual Interhouse Swimming Carnival. This year, we were blessed with a much better temperature than last year’s 40 degrees. As a result it
made for a great day of fun and competition, including some very creative costumes and team songs. There was a lot
more effort put into some of the songs, that included live music to back up the chant.
Throughout the day we had a lot of close races, with many of the age champions only being decided by a couple of
points. This year’s age champions were:

01.
Please take notice of the No Left Turn between 8 - 9am and 2.30 - 3.30pm at the Temple Christian College
Entrance and Bethany Christian School Exit. Please do not block the roadway when turning into the Temple/Bethany car park and allow for local traffic to use Countess Street both ways.
02.
Do not park or drop off students in the East Carpark (behind the East Building). This is for staff cars only.
03.
Please do not park on the verge, as you may receive a fine from the council; also as we are trying to grow
grass between the footpath and the road.
04.
Be considerate to our neighbours and do not park across their driveways. Be mindful of the fact that they still
need to enter and exit their properties and sometimes it can be made a difficult task when multiple cars are
parked next to and opposite their driveways.
05.
There is no parking or standing at the drop-off and pick-up Turning Circles. This means that if your child is
not waiting for you at the pick-up area, we ask you either park in a designated car park or find a local street
without a yellow line, or drive around the block and drive in again.
06.
In the Carpark through traffic should drive on the left lane, while Bethany Christian School pick-ups need to
stay in the right hand lane. You will only have 20 seconds standing time in the Turning Circles for your child
to get to the car before you will be asked to move on. The speed limit in the carpark is 5kmph AT ALL
TIMES.
07.
Emu Crossing - Countess Street. The Emu Crossing is manned from 8.10am to 8.30am and 3.00pm to
3.30pm, by trained student monitors. These monitors will stop traffic once there is a number of students and
families waiting. Drivers need to be aware of the 25kmph rule in place and must stop at the white line to allow pedestrians to cross. Please also be patient and show respect to our student monitors.
08.
Pedestrians a. When crossing Countess Street, please make sure you use the Emu Crossing. Be aware that under the
Road Traffic Act and Australian Road Rules, it is an offence to cross the road outside of the prescribed
pedestrian crossing lines. An expiation fine of $45 will apply to pedestrians breaking this rule. Please also
be patient and show respect to our student monitors.
b. Please walk on the paths, especially at the Temple and Bethany front gates, and do not walk across the
turning circles, as there have been a number of ‘near misses’ involving students, as well as their younger
siblings.
We understand that these safety measures may cause you a short wait and can be frustrating during peak times, but
this leads to greater safety for our children, so please be patient.
Fines
At times the Salisbury Council do give tickets to any parents who are parked where yellow lines are painted, to parents who leave their vehicles when parked on broken yellow lines, for speeding in a school zone, and also for turning left into the carpark, so please avoid these unnecessary fines by following the rules. Be aware that the police can
issue expiation notices (fines) of $365 and 3 demerit points.
New Liaison Police Officer
Senior Constable Melissa Pepper has now moved on to a new position with the Elizabeth Police. Our new liaison
officer is Constable Kristy Dodd. She has already significantly supported our school and has been able to clarify
and advise us on traffic issues and laws.

Communication Procedure
The following is Temple Christian College’s Communication Procedure. The options available to contact staff are: through your child’s Student Planner, via email (see list below), or a phone call to the
School on 8256 9600.
If you have an enquiry regarding a student issue (e.g. challenges with socialising, bullying, health, etc.),
please contact your child’s Care Group Teacher. Most issues can be resolved by speaking to your child’s
Care Group teacher, who can often liaise on your behalf with other staff members.
Temple Christian College is offering Year 10 and 11 students the following Mission opportunities in 2015. Mission Trips offer students an amazing opportunity to experience another culture and also to be able to do something
positive in people’s lives.
If you have an enquiry regarding an issue with a specific Subject (i.e. what your child is learning, your
child’s progress, learning challenges, teacher-student concerns, your child’s behaviour in class), please
contact the teacher of that subject.
