Howell Hall
Named after Cameron President Vernon C. Howell, Howell Hall
has housed many academic departments. Built in 1968, the
Department of Business first occupied the rooms. Rooms 204
and 205 were one long accounting room with rows upon rows of
tables. Electrical outlets on the floor provided electricity to the
heavy calculators on each table. Just next door in room 203, the
click clack ping of typewriters filled the air and drifted down the
hallway. Business classes moved to Nance-Boyer and finally to
their present location.
Downstairs, the Department of Home Economics filled the air with
the cling clang of pots and pans. The delicious aromas drifted out
the door to entice students sitting outside on the west porch
where the decorative concrete blocks at one time stretched all
the way to the top. One too many bird made its nest in the holes
however, and the blocks were torn down to a more manageable
level. The Deparment of Home Economics worked to become
more manageable as well. It merged with the Department of
Psychology and moved over to Nance-Boyer to create the
Department of Psychology and Human Ecology.
Today, the Department of Technology fills the upper floors with
new sounds: the quiet buzz of computers from the multimedia
computer lab and mechanical whirls and beeps from the
mechanics and electronic labs. An interactive classroom allows
students to learn by watching any of six television monitors
hooked up to a computer controlled by the professor.
Downstairs, another multimedia classroom helps students learn
Computer Aided Design.
The Institute of Applied Telematics department lasted one year
(1997) in the old Home Economic offices. Now the Multimedia
Curriculum Design department is located in the old Home
Economic offices and soon will have the area filled with new
technology. Faculty and staff will be able to learn and develop
multimedia presentations so that the technology in Howell Hall will
begin to spread across the campus.
