THE PUNKAHARJU
NORDIC WALKING PARK
A park that combines history, culture,
breathtaking views and ecological exercise.
Nordic walking is the ideal way to experience Punkaharju at its best in
the summer, and to make exploring easier for you, we have put together
a range of trails over varying terrain. All the trails can be easily accessed
from the area’s tourist resorts, most of which also have Nordic walking
poles available for hire.
1. The ridge trail
3. Kuikonniemi World War II site
5. Tree watching!
7. The Tynkkylän Lomaniemi trail
– Nordic walking trail with spectacular views
– The Salpa Line fortress and beach
Length: 3,2 km
Level of difficulty: moderate – ideal for rhythmic Nordic
walking
This ridge trail was restored and updated with new
signposts in summer 2013. It combines the Tuunaansaari
island holiday resort and the areas around the Valonhotelli and Kruunupuisto hotels. From Kruunupuisto,
you can connue walking to Hepoka and Mannila,
agritourism farms on Vaahersalo island, or head to the
Mustaniemi-Kuikonniemi area and forficaons of the
Salpa Line. Lusto, the Finnish Forest Museum, is also
easy to access from Valonhotelli. This trail offers the
most beauful views over the ridges and lakes as well as
many of the historic sites of Punkaharju.
The grounds at Kruunupuisto are the home to Finland’s
first therapy path, where people walk barefoot on different natural surfaces. A fun and smulang programme is
available for both adults and children.
Length: from Kruunupuisto and back: 4,2 km; path
through the fortress site: approx. 1,2 km
Level of difficulty: easy – most of the trail ideal for
rhythmic Nordic walking
Kruunupuisto is connected to the Kuikonniemi area by
a beauful 2,1 km-long ridge road offering views over
both Lake Pihjalavesi in Saimaa and Lake Puruvesi on the
le side of the road. The Salpa Line is part of a bunker
line that is over 1200 km long, built along the eastern
border of Finland in 1940–1941 and 1944. The Salpa
Line car park located to the north of the ridge road has
a tourist map and informaon about the history of the
Salpa Line. The fortress site features a restored dugout
and trenches. There is also a kiosk at the car park and a
nice sandy beach next to it. There are other trails in the
Kuikonniemi area as well, but they are not signposted.
– Admire the range of species in the arboretum and put your walking poles aside at
Karjalankallio
– experience an enchanted forest and the
natural habitat of the Saimaa ringed seal

8. The Holiday resort Naaranlah
trail
– a trail directly accessible from your holiday
home’s door
– a mesmerising ancient woodland only a few
hundred metres away from all the services
– into the wild!
Length: 3 km
Level of difficulty: easy – ideal for rhythmic Nordic walking
This trail can be easily accessed from the holiday homes
on Tuunaansaari island while the sauna is warming up.
The first part of the trail runs along the southern shores
of the expanding holiday resort, first following a small
dirt road and then connuing through the permanent
residenal area to the northern end of the island.
The final part of the trail runs through idyllic cultural
landscapes in the courtyard area of the Johanna Oras Art
Manor. The manor’s exhibions and the arst’s studio
are worth vising when you have more me, for example on the following day.
The trail has been marked by signs aached to street
lamps and, if needed, by signposts at juncons.
Length: 2.5 km
Level of difficulty: considerably steep in places
The starng point of this trail is the arboretum car park
located next to Highway 14, where the paths through
the arboretum also start.
Due to its narrow paths and somemes relavely steep
secons, the Kokonharju trail is not ideal for rhythmic
Nordic walking throughout, although the poles will provide excellent support. Despite its difficult terrain, the
spectacular views of the ancient woodland are definitely
worth experiencing.
To get there, just follow the hiking trail markings painted
on trees, as the Nordic walking trail has not been separately marked.
– The cultural landscapes of Hepoka and
the lake scenes of Mannila
Length (from Kruunupuisto and back): 6,2 km
Suitability for Nordic walking:
Level of difficulty: easy – ideal for rhythmic Nordic walking; minor disturbances caused by traffic
The Hepoka bed and breakfast, located xxxx kilometres away from Kruunupuisto, is a charming holiday
desnaon, especially for families with children,
although adults will also enjoy the cosy and rusc café
and the farm animals. This walking trail follows a mostly
gravelled roadway. On the shore of the lake, within a few
hundred metres of Hepoka, you’ll also find the hotel
and restaurant and coages at Mannila Farm.
Length: 3,2–3,5 km
Level of difficulty: easy – excellent for rhythmic Nordic
walking
This trail starts near Highway 14 at the arboretum car
park, which also has a café. We recommend exploring
the paths of the arboretum first, as it is an excellent
opportunity to examine dozens of different tree species.
The trees are labelled with small signs, and addional
informaon is available in the arboretum brochure.
There are two marked trails: you can either follow the
‘Puulajirei’ or the ‘Montellin rei’ trails. The trails
follow small dirt roads that are lined with trees labelled
with nameplates. The eastern side of the arboretum features the Karjalankallio laavu (tradional lean-to), which
offers breathtaking views. The path from both trails to
Karjalankallio has been marked on the map, but please
be aware that there are no signposts along the path.
Length: 2.6 km
Level of difficulty: easy – ideal for relaxed Nordic walking
Tynkkylän Lomaniemi specialises in offering high-quality accommodaon and catering services. It is located
roughly 24 km south of the centre of Punkaharju by Lake
Pihlajavesi in Saimaa.
The Nordic walking trail starts at the farm’s grounds
and follows the tracks of the nature trail over relavely
passable forest terrain. Aer passing through the magical thick spruce forest, the trail connues to the shore
of Saimaa, which is a good place for admiring the views
over the islands and, if you are in luck, spong the
Saimaa ringed seal. The waters around Lomaniemi are
said to be the home waters of the Saimaa ringed seal,
and many tourists have indeed spoed the seal there.
Length: 6.6 km
Level of difficulty: relavely easy – average physical condion recommended due to the length of the trail
Naaranlah holiday resort is located 16 km east of the
centre of Punkaharju by pure, clear Lake Puruvesi. The
resort’s accommodaon services include coages and
rooms in an real farm environment.
The Nordic walking trail starts on the grounds of the
resort and mostly follows dirt roads over variable terrain,
including ridges, marshes and fields. The rich bird populaons of the different terrain are the stars of this trail,
and, if you are lucky, you may even spot a majesc male
capercaillie feeding on the side of a forest road.

Canoeing in
the safe waters
in and around
Punkaharju
Tips for cycling trips
Cycling is an ideal way to explore the landscapes
and sights of Punkaharju. This brochure includes
ps about the two main trails, both of which
have varying lengths and offer dozens of different
experiences.
The ridge trail
Thanks to its vast network of lakes, Punkaharju is an
ideal canoeing desnaon. You can go island hopping, explore secluded coves and admire the ridges
from your canoe. The safe canoeing trails run carefully along the shores of Lake Pihlajavesi in Saimaa
and the crystal clear waters of Lake Puruvesi. Petrinsaari island, the essenal canoeing desnaon
in Puruvesi, can be reached from the Naaranlah
holiday resort, which is located in the eastern part
of Punkaharju, while the historic Kongonsaari island
can be reached from Tynkkylän Lomaniemi farm,
located in the southern part of Punkaharju. Canoes
can be hired from the Harjun Por tourist centre
and the company Saimaan Safarit, both of which
also offer assistance for novices. They can also be
hired from several accommodaon companies. For
more informaon about canoe hire, please refer to
the back cover.
Around Tuunaansaari island
Length: approx. 8 km
The paddling trail around Tuunaansaari island can be
easily accessed from the Harjun Por tourist centre or
the nearby Punkaharjun Lomakeskus resort. We recommend allowing 2–3 hours for exploring the trail.
The trail starts by going around the southern point of
Tuunaansaari, and then connues across a short stretch
of open water towards the le side of Haataansaari
island. There is a fire pit on the shore of Haataansaari,
which makes it a good spot for taking a break and roasting sausages over the campfire.
Aer leaving Haataansaari, the trail reaches its midpoint
and comes to an old stone bridge crossed by a small
village road and a larger bridge crossed by Highway
14. A relavely narrow channel that connects Lake
Pihlajavesi with Lake Puruvesi runs under these bridges.
The channel turns grassy for a few hundred metres aer
the bridges, but this stretch can be navigated easily with
a canoe. Following the shoreline, the trail connues
towards the Tuunaansalmi strait and its starng point.
-the most breathtaking views, culture, history and experiences for children
Around Laukansaari island
Length: approx. 16 km
Like the trail around Tuunaansaari island, the Laukansaari trail also starts in Lake Pihlajavesi in Saimaa and
ends in the clear waters of Lake Puruvesi . We recommend allowing at least 4 hours for this trail, plus a couple
of addional hours if you intend to take breaks.
The trail starts at the Tuunaansaari island holiday resort
and connues south across the strait and along the
shorelines of Lammasharju and Takaharju towards the
Kruunupuisto hotel complex. Stop by the café for a
refreshing ice cream and to admire the beauful and
historical hotel and its surroundings.
Aer Kruunupuisto, the trail connues towards the narrowest point of the ridge area and a stone bridge crossed
by a road along the ridge that connects Lake Pihlajavesi
with Lake Puruvesi. Following the shorelines of the ridge
roads, the trail connues to Kuikonniemi, a World War II
site. There is a kiosk in the car park on the shore.
Aer Kuikonniemi, the trail connues east under the
bridge crossed by Highway 14 towards the rocky shoreline of the southern p of Laukansaari island and the
Karjalankallio picnic area. When nearing the shore, bear
in mind that there is no pier and that the picnic shelter is
on top of the hill, shaded by the forest. Aer Karjalankallio, the trail connues towards the northern point of
Laukansaari island, going round towards Tuunaansalmi
and the starng point.
Nestled among the ridges
Length: approx. 6 km
The first part of this trail is the same as the first part of
the Laukansaari trail up to the stone bridge. This trail
then follows the ridges all the way from start to finish.
Aer the stone bridge, you can either stop by the World
War II site in Kuikonniemi, or turn le aer the bridge
and connue towards Laukanlah along the ridge side.
At the top of the bay, there is a wooden bridge called
Pususilta (‘bridge of kisses’), which leads to a walking
path to Lusto, the Finnish Forest Museum. You can leave
your canoe by the bridge and visit Lusto, located approximately 400 metres away from the bridge. To return
to Tuunaansaari island, just follow the same trail back, or
just carry your canoe across the narrow neck of land and
explore the idyllic Valkialampi pond nestled among the
ridges, approx. 1 kilometres away from the Kruunupuisto
hotel.
This trail combines the Tuunaansaari island holiday
resort and the areas around the Valonhotelli and Kruunupuisto hotels. From Kruunupuisto, the trail connues
on to Hepoka and Mannila, agritourism farms on Vaahersalo island, or alternavely to the World War II Site of
Kuikonniemi along the beauful ridge road.
The trail comprises two roads: the ridge road and the
beauful ridge route that runs right through nature. The
ridge route was rebuilt in 2013 and it is especially popular as a walking route. We recommend that cyclists walk
their bicycles along the narrowest parts of the path on
the bank below the main ridge. The trail is marked with
clear wooden signs. Contrary to what the signposts say,
cyclists approaching Kruunupuisto from Tuunaansaari
island must follow the shore road on the right by the
shoreline, as there is a long set of stairs on the guided
trail.
Distances between the different points in the trail have
been marked on the map page of this brochure.
An oung to the arboretum and
the Karjalankallio laavu
One of the most popular and interesng excursion desnaons in Punkaharju is its arboretum. The arboretum
is excellent for cycling as it is crossed by numerous small
gravel roads, and thanks to the fact that it is fairly flat,
cycling in the arboretum is effortless and suitable for
people of varying fitness levels.
The trail starts just off Highway 14 at the arboretum car
park, which has an excellent large-scale map of the area
and informaon about the Saimaa ringed seal and the
geology of Punkaharju. On the trail, you can either follow
the ‘Puulajirei’ or the ‘Montellin rei’ signposts and
discover the huge range of different tree species labelled
with small signs.
We definitely recommend packing lunch for this trail, as
the eastern shore of the area is home to the Karjalankallio laavu (tradional lean-to shelter), which offers a
breathtaking view over the crystal clear Lake Puruvesi.
For the full nature experience, stop by Lusto, the Finnish
Forest Museum, on your way back.
Distances between the different points in the trail have
been marked on the map page of this brochure.

The fortress of Kongonsaari
The desnaon of this tour is the beauful Kongonsaari

from Kongonsaari, for a short lunch break. Kongonsaari
