In Reading, we focused on Common
Core Standard RI3.2- I can identify the
main idea and supporting details in a
text.
We started the week by viewing a
“Brainpop and Brainpop, Jr.” on main
idea and details. We also used various
texts and an organizer to help us keep
track of the main idea and details.
Those texts included, Penguins are
Birds, The Coldest

Continent, and
Penguin Chick (our basal story).
Included on the organizer is explaining
how the details support the main idea.
We’ve explained to the students to
think about the text structure the author
used, and then explain how that text
structure supports the main idea.
Students continued to work on ACE
(Answer, Cite, Extend), by answering a
question together. Again, we only
focused on the “A” part of ACE, as we
want to master this before we move on
to the “C.”
We introduced opinion writing, which
we will focus on for the next several
weeks. For this prompt, everyone is
going to write a letter to Mr. Macy to
give his/her opinion as to why his/her
balloon should be included in the
Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
We read the story, Balloons Over
Broadway, which is a true story of the
Macy’s puppeteer Tony Sarg, to kick
off this next writing prompt. Students
are currently working on drawing their
balloons and will begin the organizer
next week.
We began our week by taking a unit 3
pretest. This allowed teachers to
determine appropriate math teams for
their classes. Unit 3 targets
operations including what’s my rule,
partial sums addition, expand and
trade subtraction, picture graphs, and
multiplication squares, just to name a
few.
This week we focused on “What’s My
Rule,” and estimating costs.
We also did a multiplication monster
Halloween activity.
We continued our government unit by
viewing a Board Builder on Discovery
Ed, which included short videos and
activities associated with the three
branches of government. We took a
quiz on the three branches and wrote
a paragraph about being the
president. Next week we will focus on
the election and do various activities
associated with it.
Please encourage your child to visit
X-tra Math at home. As we progress
deeper into the curriculum, knowing
their addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division facts fluently
will be a huge benefit.
Our classes enjoyed a fire prevention
presentation from the Carol Stream
Fire Department.
