The Maestro’s Corner
The RCC 2014/2015 season has been particularly
exciting for me. Our Christmas Concerts “Tis the
Season” were a great success. Our 2015 Cabaret, “Steppin’ Out on
Broadway”, was probably the best Cabaret show we have ever done, and
our soon-to-happen Spring Concerts, “There’s a Song in the Air’’, are going
to be wonderful, too, if we keep singing as well as we have during recent
rehearsals.
I’m already looking forward to our 2015/2016 season! The theme for our
Christmas Concerts is going to be “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”. The DAG
and I are still working on the 2016 Cabaret, but it’s theme will probably be
“Sentimental Journeys”. I have found several good music possibilities for
the 2016 Spring Concerts, but we haven’t picked a theme for that program
yet.
If anyone has any suggestions for themes or music, particularly for the
Spring Concerts, now is the time to let me know. You can just email me the
information or, if possible, give me a copy of the music you would like to see
us sing.
Thanks again to everyone for all your hard work this past season. It is an
honor to be your director.
Richard
Note from Jerry:
Just today I’ve created a Shutterfly Share Page for the RCC so photos taken
and posted on it can be viewed by all of us. All of Meg’s and Glen‘s Cabaret
photos are there. You can download any of them one by one if you chose.
They will be in a normal sharing image but if you look on another page in the
Ragtime Glen will provide you with high quality so you can print or have for
yourself. Hat’s off to Glen for doing that. Here is the address for the new
RCC Photo site. As soon as I can do it I’ll create a link to eliminate you
having to copy and paste this address to your browser.

Election Time in The RCC
By Meg Burnett
About our retiring board members:
We have been blessed by Cathy Nickeson's
extraordinary diligence and expertise in
updating our budgetary and treasury record
keeping system. What an enormous
contribution to RCC during her three-year
term!! Next year, she and her husband plan to
relax and travel more, without quite so many
numbers dancing around in her head.
Rosemarie Felver's cheerful presence on our
board has been much appreciated, serving as
our membership chair. In addition to preparing
new member packets, she has arranged RCC
social gatherings and food for
our crowd several times per year. She loves to
garden and lend us her beautiful soprano voice
as well as participate in Mu Phi Epsilon Music
Fraternity. She looks forward to doing more of
both next year while continuing to provide care
for her son as he continues to make great
improvements in his recovery from a
severe stroke he suffered a few months
ago. Thomas has also started to enjoy
listening to our singing at rehearsals.
2
ELECTION TIME
Susan Kim and Jim Eckerman are the nominees for the
RCC Board of Directors, to fill the vacancies left by the
end of 3-year terms of Rosemarie Felver, and Cathy
Nickeson!!!
These candidates will be voted on by the membership
after our potluck on May 4.
Susan has been retired for one year from
her career as a supervising intensive care
nurse.---and can you believe it--misses her
job! I told her that being on our Board of
Directors could be a perfect replacement
for that job! So of course, she said "yes"
when I asked her to be on our proposed
slate of new board members. She and her
husband live in the Pocket area of South
Sacramento, and they enjoy traveltrailering from Montana to the Pacific Ocean and beautiful
places in between. Susan has a beautiful alto voice, and
has graciously been part of your rehearsal snack team
extraordinaire this year! Thank you Susan for stepping up!
Jim teaches math at ARC, is married, and enjoys touring
with RCC. He has served as an RCC
board member in the past, and will bring
valuable experience to the board. Jim is a
great asset to our baritone section, and
has been very generous with his time in
assisting our treasurer every year , for
several years, with our annual audit.

Steppin’ Out On Broadway
Photos by Glen Cunningham
During the first show, I photographed mostly from the back of the hall. In the second show, I
sat in front, so the photos from the two shows have a different feel. The second show has
more close-up portrait-type photos.
These are all in a moderate file size. If someone wants a large print, I should send them the
large-sized file to have better detail in the photo. And I sized the photos to suit myself. If
you take some to a place like Walgreens to print them, their printer will cut off parts of the
sides or top in order to fill the size of print you order (different sizes have different ratios of
width to height). So, if someone wants a nice print, they should send me an e-mail to tell
me the size they want and I can send them a detailed, appropriately-proportioned photo file
to get printed.

iBeGone: Guidance in Documenting
Your Financial and Legal Affairs
This is a program that Marie & I have attended and are still working
on. We see a real benefit to it so I wanted to share the information
with my friends in the RCC. Most of you probably have your act
together but then there are others that might need a nudge to get
started. I’d be happy to share information I have with any one of you.
Jerry
Welcome to iBeGone! Get ready to do something wonderful for
yourself and your family!
Let’s think about some questions that you can probably answer
without too much effort, and some for which you may not have
immediate answers:
Who pays the bills in your home?
What happens if the spouse who deals with the family investments
and legal affairs is incapacitated?
Will your heirs know where your accounts, important papers, lock
boxes, etc. are, if you are not there?
Do your children or executor or successor trustee have access to
any of this information?
When the crisis of a critical illness or death takes us, we want to
make sure our loved ones are not struggling to figure out our final
wishes and financial affairs.
iBeGone Seminars guide you every
step of the way as you record the information needed into a unique,
personalized organizational system. When your binder and/or flash
drive is complete, all your important information will be readily
available. Seminars are presented two hours a week for four weeks
in a comfortable, informal setting, allowing questions and concepts
to be discussed by all participants.
More information about iBeGone seminars is available at
www.iBeGone.com, on Facebook at iBeGone Seminars, or contact:

Getting to Know You, Susan Kim
By Vera Refnes
Have you met Susan Kim, one of
introduce yourself and you will
down-to-earth and giving person.
Algona, Iowa and has also lived
and Salt Lake City, Utah with her
our newest second altos? If not,
immediately admire this interesting,
She was born on October 27th in
in Scottsdale, Arizona, Auburn, CA,
husband Kent.
She joined RCC because she
loves to sing, and she sings also in
the choir at Faith Presbyterian
Church and their Praise group. She
plays piano, but in her own
words, “Not nearly as well as Kathy
Earl!” She played French horn
through her sophomore year of
college. (Maybe she and Steve Pierce could work up a duet for us for our next retreat!! ) Her most
memorable musical experience was singing in the acappella choir at CSU, Chico.
Susan is a retired neonatal nurse. She worked with high risk infants and then became the assistant
manager. She loved caring for the babies and their families and managing other staff members on
the day shift. She liked learning new things and dealing with daily challenges, never knowing what
was coming through the door next!
When it comes to favorites, Susan loves to be challenged musically with singing. She likes to listen to
jazz, classical, blues and bluegrass music. She has read the whole Harry Potter series and enjoyed
seeing the “Into the Woods” movie. She enjoys playing Bocce Ball and Beer Pong (Can you
remember who won???) Her favorite sport to watch is basketball so she will be very busy in the next
few weeks! When it comes to past-times, you'll find her gardening, being outdoors or traveling. She
supports several causes including the Heifer Project International, World Vision and Dr's without
Borders. Yes, cooking and dining out are both things she enjoys as well as camping in their trailer.
She likes the color blue, the fall season, many kinds of snacks and oatmeal raisin or spice cookies.
She loves vacations to sunny beaches On any sunny day, you'll find her in the garden or in the
hammock with a good book, or perhaps out fishing! On a rainy day, she'd be home close to a blazing
fire. When she is with close friends, they could be in Calistoga for a spa retreat. She has family in
Alaska and Montana and would like to visit them more often.
If she weren't at practice on Monday night, she would be in her recliner crocheting a baby blanket. If
she ever won the lottery, she would be re-doing the yard, or off traveling. She'd walk two miles for fun,
exercise, or sharing time with her dogs.
As a music teacher's daughter, music has always come in her direction – even prior to birth! Now,
see what was said at the beginning? Susan is a lovely addition to RCC, coming to us with a multitude
of musical expertise, a pleasant personality, and a willingness to work hard! Make it a point to get to
know her!! Welcome, Susan!

Getting to Know You, Adrian Mora
By Vera Refnes
It's hard not to notice Adrian Mora in the alto section. Yes, she is the
tallest alto, singing enthusiastically with plenty of pleasant facial
expressions. She was born in Yuba City 32 years ago. She has also
lived in Los Angeles and Chico. Her father, Dean Esterbrook is one of
Richard's good friends and Adrian also is married to a Dean (Mora)!
Adrian joined RCC because Richard was her high school teacher! In
addition to playing violin, she sings in her choir at Westminster
Presbyterian. One of her most memorable musical experiences was
soloing in one of the Bach Passions.. Adrian is also a music teacher with
a full Baroque orchestra and loves it when kids are excited enough about
music to practice.
Adrian loves singing classical and a cappella
music, but also enjoys listening to country! She
likes reading mysteries and still has warm
feelings about the whole Nancy Drew series
she read as a kid. The last movie she saw was
“Fried Green Tomatoes”. (Somebody take that
girl to the movies!) She likes to watch the
Niners, but plays only board games herself.
She has discovered gardening as a new
pastime and supports the LGTB (lesbian, gay,
transgender, bisexual) rights. Her favorite color
is yellow (did you see her bright yellow jacket at
cabaret?) and the fall season. Would you
believe she calls cookies yucky (first
interviewee ever!) but can be seen munching on hummus and crackers.
Adrian can be found vacationing on the coast or in the forest. On a sunny
day, she would be in her yard and on a rainy night, curled up with a good
book, hot tea and a good fire. She likes to seek out adventures with her
good friends.
If she were not at practice on Monday nights, she would probably be
sleeping, but she would walk 2 miles to visit Starbucks! If she won the
lottery, she would pay off debts and give to the church. Adrian loves
telling jokes and giving and receiving hugs. So, what are you waiting for?
Walk up to this young lady, give and receive a hug and ask for a joke or
two!! Thanks for joining us, Adrian!

Long, Lost Bible Version of How Computers Started
Thanks to Judy Anderson
In ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by the
name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a healthy
young wife by the name of Dorothy.
Dot Com was a comely woman, large of breast, broad of
shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she was often called
Amazon Dot Com.
And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why dost thou
travel so far from town to town with thy goods when thou
canst trade without ever leaving thy tent?"
Abraham did look at her as though she were several
saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, "How,
dear?"
Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and
drums in between to send messages saying what you
have for sale, and they will reply telling you who hath the
best price. The sale can be made on the drums and
delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)."
Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have
her way with the drums.
The drums rang out and were an immediate success.
Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price,
without ever having to move from his tent.
To prevent neighboring countries from overhearing what
the drums were saying, Dot devised a system that only
she and the drummers knew. It was known as Must Send
Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed a
language to transmit ideas and pictures - Hebrew To The
People (HTTP).
And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth
the greedy horsefly take to camel dung.
They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican
Sybarites, or NERDS.
9
And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new
riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one
noticed that the real riches were going to that
enterprising drum dealer, Brother William of Gates,
who bought off every drum maker in the land. Indeed
he did insist on drums to be made that would work
only with Brother Gates' drumheads and drumsticks.
And Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started
is being taken over by others."
And Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel , or
eBay as it came to be known.
He said, "We need a name that reflects what we are."
And Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner
Operators." "YAHOO," said Abraham. And because it
was Dot's idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com.
Abraham's cousin, Joshua, being the young Gregarious
Energetic Educated Kid (GEEK) that he was, soon
started using Dot's drums to locate things around the
countryside.
It soon became known as God's Own Official Guide to
Locating Everything (GOOGLE).
That is how it all began. And
that's the truth!

“A virtuoso is a musician with real
high morals.”
Actual quotes from grade school
essays on classical music.

Agnus Dei was a woman
composer famous for her
church music.

Refrain means don’t do it,. A
refrain in music is the part you
had better not try to sing.

J.S. Bach died from 1750 to the
present.

Handel was half German, half
Italian, and half English. He was
rather large

Beethoven wrote music even
though he was deaf. He was so
deaf he wrote loud music. He
took long walks in the forest
even when everyone was calling
him. I guess he could not hear
so good. Beethoven expired in
1827 and later died from this.

Henry Purcell is a well known
composer few people have ever
heard of.
Aaron Copland is one of our
most famous contemporary
composers. It is unusual to be
contemporary. Most
composers do not live until
they are dead.

An Opera is a song of bigly
size.

In the last scene of Pagliacci.
Canio stabs Nedda who is the
one he really loves. Pretty
soon Silvio gets stabbed also
and they all live happily ever
after.

Music sung by two people at
the same time is called a duel.

I know what a sextet is but I’d
rather not say.

Caruso was at first an Italian.
Then someone heard his voice
and said he would go a long
way. And he came to America.

Most authorities agree that
music of antiquity was written
long ago.

Probably the most marvelous
fugue was the one between
the Hatfields and the McCoys.

A harp is a nude piano.

My very best liked piece is the
Bronze lullaby.
Monthly Message from Meg
Merry Month of May!
As we polish up our beautiful music for the spring concert and Kathy's
wedding next week, challenges as well as excitement greet us, as every
spring. After my own 15 RCC seasons, I still look forward to this concert and
more in years ahead. Allergies???--drink a lot of water, and do follow all the
regular allergy care regimens that we all know about, but too often ignore in
our busy days. Rest and self-care helps a lot!!
Tickets for Spring concert? We are in our usual spring stretch to complete a
balanced budget for the year, as we always do. Next year, however, has a
few more strenuous challenges, with several of our costs going up a bit,
adding up to a chunk. Your Board of Directors has not chosen to propose an
increase in member dues or ticket prices yet for next fall, to cover those
anticipated increases, as both those measures have been cautiously
enacted within the past 3 years Instead, we chose to sell more spring
concert tickets, so as not to lose any of our singers or our audience who
could get priced out of our excellent and affordable presentations,
So, since we do want our audiences to come and enjoy what we have to
offer, you are welcome to please forward any part of my email sent to all of
you earlier Friday evening.( with bcc's to my own personal email list of local
music fans and maybe-music fans). Or create your own personal invitation to
those friends, relatives and acquaintances on your contacts list, even if they
have already received a mailed flyer.
Thank you to our many members who have posted flyers on every
community bulletin board in town. I have run out of my stash of 40 already.
Please post some more, as well as hand them out while asking at least 10
people to buy your specially priced pre-sale tickets at $15.00 or ten for
$10.00 each. When people tell me they are unable to attend, they always
say they will pass the flyer on to someone who may be able to come-because I ask them so sweetly to do that too!
Look for our Sac Choral Calendar shared ad in the Bee Ticket section on May
1, and save it for someone who can still choose to come to the concerts that
same weekend. We can do it!!!
