THE UNIS FUND
n As alumni, we are intimately familiar with the gift of a UNIS education. It provides the cultural intelligence
necessary to navigate and thrive in our diverse city and world. The richness of this global education is why we
enroll our own children and why we wholeheartedly contribute to the Fund. A gift to the Fund supports the goal
of socioeconomic diversity by increasing financial aid and contributes to the many enrichment programs
available to all students. We encourage our fellow UNIS parents to participate, regardless of the size of the

Dear UNIS Community and Friends,
Welcome to the launch of the UNIS Fund for this year! The UNIS Fund supports the many
annual improvements that we implement in Queens and Manhattan. These enhancements
enable us to provide the very best learning opportunities to our students while helping to
advance our strategic goals for the future of UNIS.
In the following pages, you will see the goals of the UNIS Fund each displayed in a modern
language taught at our school and a sampling of over $2 million in building improvements, new programs and
increased financial aid on both campuses for the current school year. Your support of the UNIS Fund is one of
the most meaningful gifts you can make. Increased parent giving over the last two years helped us to leverage a
grant for $50,000 from the E.E. Ford Foundation for Picture Justice, a human rights photojournalism and theater
program.
We have so much celebrate at UNIS! Thank you so very much in advance for your support of the UNIS Fund

UNIS offers its students a rich multilingual international education and an exceptional depth
of academic, music, art, athletic and enrichment programs that we continue to build and
enhance. Nonetheless, tuition at UNIS remains approximately 20% below that of other
New York City schools offering comparable programs.

n Exercise and Fitness Room Renovation – creating more well-lit and well-ventilated spaces and new equipment – $700,000

n New furniture configurations for JS and TH students – encouraging team work and flexible teaching methods – $100,000
n Two Gender Neutral Bathrooms – promoting the safe integration of transgender and gender nonconforming people

n New Pre-K Class – welcoming our newest students to an exciting and well-equipped purpose built space – $130,000
n Maker Space for the MS – helping students translate how concepts in math and science apply to real world experiences
with a dedicated 3D printer – $35,000
n Financial Aid – recruiting well-qualified Tutorial House students from prestigious organizations such as the Oliver Scholars
Program and Harlem Academy. Without financial aid, these students could not afford a UNIS education – $40,000 per
student, (11 students 2016-2017 – $440,000)
n New HDMI projector for the Sylvia Howard Fuhrman Theater – upgrading our projector to one that has new technology,
higher resolution and is compatible with media playback devices – $40,000
n Carnegie Hall Concert – giving our Manhattan and Queens students the opportunity to perform on this renowned stage.
Held on Sunday, January 22, 2017 UNIS musicians perform an original commissioned piece by Elliot Chang ’12.
Fundraising for the Carnegie Hall event will support repairs to the UNIS theater grand piano – $15,000
n Picture Justice – enabling our student activists to participate in a human rights humanities and theater program. Picture
Justice has been recognized by the E.E. Ford Foundation through a $50,000 grant. To receive this grant, we must match
this amount by raising $50,000. These funds will be used to expand the program with public school students who live in
under-served communities around New York City.

n What does it mean to give to UNIS?
Giving to the UNIS Fund demonstrates our shared commitment to support our school. Sustained giving and a high level
of parent participation play a key role in enabling us to approach governments and foundations for support.
n Why does UNIS need the money when the UN is financially supporting the school?
The United Nations is a critical resource for our school. Some UN families receive financial grants from their missions or
from the UN to help underwrite tuition expenses. UNIS is not in the UN’s budget and receives no financial support.
n How much should I give?
UNIS families are asked to contribute within their means. UNIS is a nonprofit organization under U.S. law and donations
are fully tax-deductible. Many employers will match your and your spouse’s gift at no cost to you and will create more
support for UNIS.
n What if I cannot afford to make a large gift?
Every gift of every size is important, meaningful and deeply appreciated.
n What is a recurring gift?
When you make an annual pledge of a gift to UNIS, you can pay in monthly installments charged to your credit card. This
is an easy process that allows you to spread out your pledge payments throughout the year. You can cancel at any time.

n I bought a ticket to a school event. Isn’t that a UNIS Fund donation?
Event tickets are not a donation to the UNIS Fund. A donation to the UNIS Fund is a 100% tax-deductible gift that
supports the important needs of the school.
n I am an alum, why is my giving important?
Alumni tell us that their time at UNIS was transformative. Just as gifts supported your education, your gift supports
today’s students as they embark on their journey. Alumni gifts help to sustain the hallmarks of a transformative
international education.
n How do I make a gift to the UNIS Fund?
UNIS accepts gifts of cash, checks and stock. Credit card gifts can be made securely online or by check mailed to the
Advancement Office in the enclosed gift envelope. For gifts of stock, download the stock transfer form at
