The Cask of Amontillado Essay
Composing the Draft
Paragraph 1- Introduction
- Using the completed Structuring the Introduction – “The Cask of Amontillado,” take and copy
sentences 1-5 in order to form your first paragraph, concluding with the thesis
statement that was provided for you.
- Make sure that the sentences flow and are related. Check transitions, and don’t be repetitive
with your wording!
Paragraph 2 – Argument and Support, Pride and Revenge
- Using the Integrating Quotes worksheet that you completed based on Assignment 1 & 2,
structure and order your examples that you’ll be using to persuade the reader that
Montressor is indeed evil.
- Create a topic sentence that links your paragraph on pride and revenge to the thesis
statement.
- Following the topic sentence, refer to your examples from Assignment 1 on the Integrating
Quotes sheet. These will be used as the support for the body paragraphs:
*Begin with the “Rephrasing of example or quote that incorporates context.”
This sentence should contain both the quote and the context in which it takes
place in the story. Copy this into your paragraph after the topic sentence.
* Then, use a transition, and tell your reader how this example supports the
idea of revenge or pride. This should be taken from commentary.
* You may split each example into a separate paragraph, or include the four
examples in one. Keep mindful of readability!
Note: Remember, the commentary should be at least four times longer than the quote that it
supports! For example, if a quote takes up one line, the commentary should be at least four
lines!
Paragraph 3 – Argument and Support, Montressor’s Evil Nature
- Follow the same steps as you did for paragraph 2, but use examples from Assignment 2
instead of those from Assignment 1. You should have four examples total for this
section, along with their commentary.
Paragraph 4 – Conclusion
- Using the completed The Cask of Amontillado – Concluding Paragraph, take and copy
sentences 1-5 in order to form your final paragraph, concluding with the thesis
restatement that was provided for you.
- Make sure that the sentences flow and are related. Check transitions, and don’t be repetitive
with your wording!
