Materials:
½ yd of two complimentary fabrics (will make a set of 4
place mats)
1 ¼ yds backing fabric
4 pieces of batting approx 20” square
Creative Grid Ruler 60 degree triangle
Sewing machine in good working order with all
accessories
Basic sewing supplies to include pins, seam gauge, seam
ripper, point turner, etc
Start cutting 60 degree triangles from a strip by first cutting
a “finishing” triangle using the Creative Grid Ruler (CGR) 60
Triangle Ruler. Cut off selvedges from the strip, place the
CGR triangle ruler so that the vertical line to the left of the
center line is on the vertical edge of the fabric, then cut
along the angled right side of the ruler. This establishes the
60 degree angle on the strip – and gives you triangles to
“square off'” your project if you want!
Then rotate ( do not flip!) and lay your CGR triangle ruler so that the
snubbed point is down along the edge of the strip and the angled edge
matches u with the fabric edge you just cut. Cut along the opposite
edge of the ruler. Continue rotating the ruler, and cutting out fabric
triangles across the width of the fabric strip!
How to Make Place Mats: : all seams 1/4”, and all seams pressed open.
From each of the two fabrics, cut (2) 8 1/2” strips across the width
of the fabric. From each of these strips, cut (6) 8 1/2” 60 degree
triangles using the Creative Grids ruler. Sew three triangles
together to make a row, alternating colors and the direction of the
snubbed point of the triangle (either up or down!). Make a
second row with opposing color triangles and placement direction
as depicted at right. Sew the two rows together, matching the
seams in the center.
Lay batting down on the table, then place a piece of backing fabric approx 20-22” square on top of
the batting so that it is right side up. Then place the hexagon right side down. Pin around thru all
layers. Using the walking foot on your sewing machine, see all the way around the big hexagon.
Trim away the excess backing and batting so that all edges are even. Along one outside edge, finger
press the seam allowance open; then trim away the batting from the seam allowance and un-sew the
stitches to make an opening big enough to turn the hexagon right side out. Push out the corners
carefully with a point turner. Press and pin the opening closed. Edge stitch all the way around,
securing the opening. Quilt as desired! You can make 4 place mats from the above quantities.
