Syracuse Westside Urban Mission at Brown Memorial United Methodist Church Mail to: PO Box 955, Syracuse, 13201-0955 Located at: 228 Davis Street, Syracuse Brown Memorial UM Church has served Syracuse’s near west side community for 148 years and is now the last “mainline” Protestant Church in the community. Over time Brown changed from being a “self-sufficient” neighborhood church to a mission church in one of our nation’s poorest neighborhoods. Our mission and purpose is to: 1. Address the concerns and conditions of the people on the near west side of Syracuse. 2. Support existing programs and initiate new programs which will improve the quality of life in our community. 3. Partner with other organizations, including faithbased groups and community development groups. As the west side changed, three neighborhood churches— St. Paul’s Lutheran, Delaware St. Baptist and Brown— cooperated in Westside Ministries, providing a food pantry (St. Paul’s), a clothes’ closet (Brown) and life skills classes (Delaware). With the closing of the other two churches, all three programs are now housed at Brown. Ten years ago the Board of Directors applied for a Church and Community Worker [missionary] from our Board of Global Ministries and in October 2001 Donna Kay Campbell became the first CCW to serve the Brown community and parish for the next 8 years. Through her efforts and that of pastor Betty Morey, Board members and a host of volunteers from the community & area churches the ministry has grown into what is now named the Syracuse Westside Urban Mission (SWUM). Brown Memorial’s building has been modified to include the St. Paul’s Pantry and the sanctuary shortened to create additional program space. Brown is also home to an A.A. group, a ‘Talk to a Lawyer’ Program sponsored by the County Bar Assn., a program operated by Delaware Academy 3 days a week, weekly Bible study and a fellowship time for adults once a month. A major transition occurs July 1, 2010 for SWUM! A new Pastor-Project Director, the Rev. Marti Swords-Horrell, will be appointed to Brown Memorial UMC and a new Church and Community Worker, Andrew GladstoneHighland (raised in St. Paul’s UMC, Ithaca!), begins. Andrew Gladstone-Highland Your financial support of the 2010 SWUM Budget of just under $31 $31,000 is appreciated. See back page. We accomplish our purposes in the following ways: Through our Church & Community Worker who; • Works with the elementary, middle and high school in our community. • Has established a tutorial reading/mentoring program. Volunteer tutor working with student • Arranges for church camping experiences for neighborhood youth each summer. • Has organized the Neighborhood Sunday School and the 8 week summer ‘Terrific Ts’ program. • Supervises the Westside Closet at Brown Church • Attends community events and meetings. • Advocates for residents • Works with the Pastor/Project Director and SWUM Board to develop programs to meet the emerging needs of the community. By our involvement in meetings and joining organizations which work for the benefit of the community; • Tomorrow’s Neighborhoods Today [TNT] – sponsored by the Syracuse Community Development Dept. working to improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods. • Syracuse United Neighbors Westside Coalition which works with neighbors to identify problem areas and concerns • Ad hoc committees that strive to keep our youth in school and improve the quality of life in our neighborhood.
