Sometimes there are zeros in subtraction.

Sushu had 1,002 pennies. She traded 575 pennies for quarters.
How many pennies does Sushu have left?
Find 1,002 575.
Step 2: Now you can subtract ones.
12 5 7.
Record in the ones’ place.
Step 3: Compare the digits in the tens’ place.
79. You can subtract 7 from 9.
Subtract tens: 9 7 2. Record.
Step 4: Compare the digits in the hundreds’ place.
59. You can subtract 5 from 9.
Subtract hundreds: 9 5 4. Record.
Step 5: There are no thousands left.
Answer: Sushu has 427 pennies left.
