MIGIZI Communications High School After-School Program Dear Parent or Guardian: We are pleased to offer your student the opportunity to participate in the MIGIZI Communications High School After-School program. You are receiving this packet because your student’s teacher has determined that your student would benefit by participating in this free after-school program. Please read the following program information to determine if you are able to commit to enrolling your student in the program. Program Information: The MIGIZI Communications High School After-School Program is open Monday through Thursday, from the end of school until 5:00 pm. (Exceptions include school holidays.) The program is an academic intervention and enrichment program designed to give your student extra support with homework, literacy, math, and incorporates enrichment activities including nutrition, entrepreneurship, science, leadership and art. Metro Transit tokens are available for paid transportation to and from MIGIZI Communications programming. Fall Session: Oct 22 2012 – Dec 20 2012 Winter Session: Jan 2 2013 – Mar 28 2013 Spring Session: Apr 8 2013 – May 23 2013 Choose one or more of the following programs. Register @ http://migizi.org Native Youth Futures MW 3:00pm-5:00pm (slots available: 10) An introduction to entrepreneurship and financial literacy, this class explores the concepts of: saving & investing, market research, teamwork & negotiation, finding a niche and opportunity cost. Each lesson covers a component of the formal business plan to guide the evolution of the students’ business ideas. After completion of course curriculum, individual students will have accessed their personal skills, developed a business idea based on the teachings and instructor guidance, and worked on the successful completion of a business plan. Students have an option to compete in the Entrepreneurship Fair with the winning business plans receiving a $1000 MicroGrant. Students successfully completing this course will be eligible for a summer paid internship opportunity. Students have the opportunity to do a science fair project (either individually or in groups up to 3) fit for competition at the Twin Cities Regional Science Fair or the local AISES affiliated science fair in January. Top projects each year have gone on to state, the National American Indian Science and Engineering Fair in Albuquerque and even the International Science Fair. Everyone invited bring a dish if you can and a positive mindset to heal and learn from one another. We will gain new positive experiences MIGIZI staff Native Mentor will partner with the students to lead discussions preparing for educational journeys affecting our community. We will have weekly themed academic and cultural related activities; study the seven grandfather teachings as stated in the MOA agreement with the Native academic community and MPS Indian Education.
