INFORMATION BULLETIN
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Our annual report preparation is underway and I
Another two weeks and some wonderful community have done a review of our Running Records and
feedback to share with you.
NAPLAN and now we survey all the students, staff
and 85 families to get your feedback on what matters

a recent Lions Dinner - a great success. They
worked alongside Lion Elizabeth who managed the Remembrance Day 11/11/14

direction and remained cheerful on a demanding Day. All classes made a wreath, all students wore a
schedule as volunteers. I spent much of my time at poppy and were presented with a sprig of rosemary

Once again, Mannum’s wonderful Joan Kreiser came
up from Aminya. A big thank you to Mark Davis from
the RSL for his support and delivering the commemorative address. An even bigger thank you to Ms
Angela Groves and her team for co-ordinating the
event - and what a good opportunity to have our
community join with us. Our monument will be ready
next year so mark this date in your diary.

The Peace Run
Our R - 7 students responded so well to the organiser of the Peace Run and were all given heaps of
praise by Saranyu Pearson and his team. They ran,
they passed the Peace Baton and they were passed
by a very fit Ms Holloway who bounded around the
oval as well. Sri Chinmoy, the founder of the Peace
Run, passed away in 2007 but his words live on and
are so important to the world we live in today.
“Peace doesn’t mean the absence of war, peace
means the presence of harmony, love, satisfaction and oneness.” The impact of his vision and
the passion of the man has seen the run continue
to and grow around the world. Just look at a few of the
pictures in our insert and see the genuine enjoyment
of our students. Well done to Ms Barnes and Ms
Holloway for following up with the planning.

events go on and Year 12’s want to participate on
Sports Day, Swimming, etc, so the early start
provides us with the time needed to cover all the
course work. We have made some changes to the
Senior classrooms and corridor with a switch for the
Year 10/12 rooms and a relocation of Ms Elliker’s
office. It seems to be working well thus far.
Update From the Governing Council
On Wednesday 19th November, a working party
from Governing Council will meet with me to
review our mobile phone policy. If you would like
to give us feedback when we post the updated
policy, it will be welcomed. One nearby school
has a very simple policy: HEAR IT, SEE IT, USE
IT, LOSE IT!! The reason we are reviewing ours
is sadly, due to misuse of mobile phones and
arguments with staff as our current process
involves “if your mobile phone is seen in a lesson
you will need to hand it into the Front Office and
collect it at the end of the day.” Not with an
argument!
HOSTING
If you would be interested in hosting a Year 12
student from Japan for 2015, please phone the
school for more information.
Take care on these very hot days and have fresh
water on hand for your pets and yourself.
Have another good two weeks.
Kind regards
Leonie Falland
Remember, “It costs nothing to be positive and, it changes things for
the better.”

INFORMATION FOR YOU
LITTLE THINGS MATTER
Goodness we are all so busy. The end of the year is
rushing towards us at amazing pace—at least it seems that
way.
The visit by the “Peace Run” was a fabulous event and I
was so proud of our school. The children were so sincere in
their wish for peace and the photos are amazing. Please
take the time to look on the web site. The organiser of the
run said Mannum was the most joyful and enthusiastic
school they had visited in Australia thus far.
There are so many fabulous things about Mannum Junior
school—I am so disappointed when people make generic
negative comments— “it’s a terrible school …”etc. If you
have any concerns please contact me and let us attempt to
work through them before you assume the worst.
Teachers are continuing to build their skills in Natural Maths
with Carol Porter, from regional office, presenting demonstration lessons in every class over the next few weeks. We
have one more session with James—the speech therapist—on Oral Language next Monday after school. The
Junior school staff are really focused on their learning to
provide the best opportunities for your child’s learning.
This week we are working on our 4x tables. Practise in the
car—they can’t escape!
I asked how many children had read over the weekend and
less than 1 out of 3 children had. This is a worry as without
the practise they will not keep up with the rates required for
their year levels. Take a book every where you go. They
can read while you are waiting at the doctors etc—take
every opportunity.
I know I asked last newsletter but we are still looking for
PVC pipes—any lengths—short or long. We are also
looking for joiners, elbows and T pieces. If you have been
building and have some bits left over we could use them in
our construction play area. They are great for problem
solving and developing special skills—as well as good fun.
Assembly—Monday 9.00 Week 9.
I hope you have seen our articles in the ‘Mannum Mag’ - if
not look out for them!
Thank you for you support

Our Mural
At Mannum Community College we promote peer partnerships across each sub school and encourage team work and
a community of successful learners. We have created a mural
with the ethos ‘We all may be different fish, but at Mannum
Community College we swim together.’ Come and have a
look at the beautiful master piece which is located on the brick
wall just past the black gates. The Mural was created by
Michelle Grieger and printed by Bear Rock Signs.

2014 SAPSASA CRICKET
The weekly session will enable the school and families to develop
partnerships around learning prior to children beginning their education (kindergarten and school) and support families’ engagement
in their children’s numeracy and literacy development.
ABSENCE DUE TO ILLNESS!
The school and the Department for Education and Child Development (DECD) regularly monitor absenteeism. Prolonged absenteeism may be referred to the Student Attendance Counsellor in the Regional Office.
As with all absences, if your child is away sick it is important
to notify the school. For a prolonged absence of three or
more consecutive days it is advisable to obtain a
doctors certificate to be sent to the school for our records.
Health Care Plans may need to be developed in consultation
with your doctor to enable the school to provide safe, appropriate health support.
YEAR 11 COMMUNITY STUDIES

Home Time
This year as part of my Stage 1 Community Studies, I have been
working with the Year 4/5 classes from Mrs Rowley and Mrs Brodie at
lunchtime teaching them the basic skills for Rugby. My friend Liam
(who helped me) and I taught them to pass, defend, attack and work
as a team before getting into mini games starting with touch rugby
and then eventually getting into some tackling games. Overall I enjoyed it just as much as they did and was really happy to get positive
feedback from both teachers and students. It was really enjoyable to
see the students pick up the game so well and show their talent as
well as seeing them have heaps of fun. I would like to thank the teachers and other staff members for helping and allowing me to work with
the Year 4/5s, my friend and class mate Liam for helping me out, the
Year 10s and 11s for helping as well and taking photos and also to
some of the Year 6/7s for helping out when we needed numbers for a
game. Finally to the Year 4/5s for the fantastic year I’ve spent with
them and for showing their eagerness, enthusiasm and excitement in
the game.
