Unit Rates Workshop 7th Grade small group lesson: 45 minutes taught in resource room or small group setting. Standard and Objectives 7.RP.1 Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units. SWBAT identify a unit rate and use rates, unit rates or diagrams to solve rate questions. Student Friendly verbiage: SWBAT say what a unit rate is, and use an equation to find a unit rate. End goal / Exit Ticket: Students will complete 5 unit rate number problems with 100% accuracy. Section Lesson Content Resources Intro 5 minutes (1) Settle students at table Written checklist (2) Go through checklist of needed supplies and help students to Table supplies identify where they can get these supplies (backpacks, desks, Worksheets teacher resources) White boards ❏ Pencil and markers ❏ Calculator Calculators ❏ Scratch paper ❏ Worksheet (at table) ❏ White boards (at table) ❏ Markers (at table) (3) Checkin about day and take pulse of student needs, triage as necessary. 1. Name one thing that has gone well today 2. Name one thing that has gone bad today 3. What is a strategy we can use to move past our bad moment? (teacher models) 4. Big question to think about: How can making mistakes help us to become better mathematicians? Give sentence stems for students who may struggle to express feelings or thoughts. (4) Review objective and phrase it in student friendly terms Concept / Hook Ask students to discuss what phrases like “miles per hour” or “words per minute” mean. Ask if those phrases have a number in 5 minutes them (one) and if they have a common number (one). Depending on group size and needs, students can write their answers down, use turnandtalks or simply have a group discussion. Explain to students that these are all unit rates. They all compare some amount to ONE of another amount. (numbers of miles PER 1 gallon, number of words per ONE minute). We use unit rates when we want to compare things. But first, we need to learn to calculate them. Process 5 minutes Example problem: 21 miles and 3 gallons. Guide students through the process of calculating unit rates via these steps: 1. Write out the problem: “21 miles | 3 gallons” 2. Underneath, write “21 / 3” 3. Solve the division problem 4. Rewrite as a unit rate: 7 miles per gallon Steps can be on laminated miniposters that students can fill in blanks and write on with dry erase markers, on an anchor chart, power point, etc. Additionally, numbers could be represented visually through drawings or tokens and the process solved by grouping. Work through these examples as well with students: 16 miles in 4 minutes 60 grapes for $10 White boards Anchor charts Tokens / picture supports Guided Practice 20 minutes On worksheet, provide students with 10 more problems to work through. Use the process of chaining If students become frustrated with mistakes or not understanding a concept, bring them back to the conversation at the beginning of the workshop of how mistakes make us better mathematicians. Worksheets can have varying modifications. Semifilled in response blocks Picturesupported question stems Extension: ministories Use buddy tutoring as appropriate for students who are getting it quickly and could use the experience of explaining it to another. Worksheet with 10 problems Copies of modified worksheets as needed White board / scratch paper / calculators Exit Ticket 5 minutes Exit ticket with 5 problems Debrief 5 minutes Ask students to think about and discuss the following: 1. What was hard about the lesson today? 2. What did you do to overcome these hard parts? 3. On a scale of 1 to 5, how do you feel about.. Number scale 1 through 5 Picture response a. How hard you worked today? b. How successful you feel? 4. Name one thing you saw a peer do that was helpful, kind or inspiring. Provide pictures or situations, a number scale or paper to draw out feelings as appropriate for student responses. Followup with students as needed regarding their responses or reactions. options
