June 8, 2014 - Holy Trinity Catholic Church

Greetings From Fr. Dave ~ [email protected]
Come Holy Spirit! Those three words constitute a
powerful prayer and call upon an indispensable help
in living our faith. Here at Holy Trinity we are using
the three words, KNOW, GROW, GO as an umbrella
over everything we do. Apart from the Holy Spirit
we can know about Jesus, but we cannot know him
personally. Apart from the Holy Spirit we can dedicate ourselves to all kinds of spiritual disciplines but
they will lead us only to self-righteousness, deeper
guilt, and focus on self. Apart from the Holy Spirit,
our efforts to go forth and make a difference in the
world will lack the proper motivation, inspiration,
and timing - and hence will not bear the fruit we
hope for.
With the Holy Spirit we can go forth and boldly and
appropriately reach out in kindness, charity, and in a
way and at a time that makes our efforts truly effective.
Come Holy Spirit!
This week on Monday evening, June 9th, 6;00pm we
have our graduation Mass for our 8th grade students.
Many of them have been here at our school since Kindergarten, so this is a big send off. God bless all who
graduate this spring!
Are you interested in becoming an Eucharistic Minister? Lector? Greeter/Usher? If so, please stop by our
Information Desk before or after any of our Masses
and leave your contact information. We will gladly
provide the training necessary to prep you to serve
our parish in these ways!
With the Holy Spirit we are privileged to enter into a
relationship with Jesus Christ, responding fully to his
invitation to us to invite him into the center of our
lives and experience him deeply and personally.
With the Holy Spirit we can hear God speaking
through the Bible, in our spiritual reading, and in our Sebastian Felipe Ariza, Gianna Sofia Stoica and Juan
life experiences. We can overcome our character Pablo Morales were baptized this week. Congratulafaults and sins, and we can grow in true holiness. tions!
PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY
Do you know someone who has had a change in
their living situation, is out of work or graduating?
Maybe giving them a prayer shawl will help ease their
situation. Our next meeting is Saturday, June 4th in the conference room of the parish center from 3-5pm. You are always welcome to stop by and see what we do. To request a
prayer shawl for someone or for more information about
this ministry, please call Linda Dum at 503- 642-1168.
RESPECT LIFE
RESPECT LIFE meeting today, Sunday, June 8, at 12:30pm in
Fireside Room #4 downstairs. Join us for an hour as we discuss our basket for the Oregon Right to Life auction in September and Respect Life Sunday in October. Light refreshments. We’d love to see you there.
The Pentecost Voice - “The Holy Spirit, who came on Pentecost, gave voice to the apostles to proclaim the truth of the
Gospel. The Spirit, the Soul of the Church, continues to enable the Church to speak, and enables us to speak in our
individual capacity. As Bishop Elio Sgreccia, former President of the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life has said,
“The Church must speak out in today’s context on fundamental rights, the right to justice, the right to peace, but
above all and in the first place, the right to life. If the Church
did not speak, did not proclaim the truth, it would be abandoning its duty; it would be unfaithful to society, to the good
of society. Therefore, its precise duty is the very liberty to
intervene with word, and also with example - the example
of promoting human life, of intervening for the salvation of
mankind.”
HEALTH MINISTRY
Holy Trinity Health Ministry invites you to a
free educational presentation on "Making
Retirement Work" by Dr. Randall Kinnison of Genesis Mediation. Dr. Kinnison will discuss: The Work and Play Balance in Retirement, Understanding Your Identity in the Aging Process, Leaving a Legacy that Matters, and Living a Full

considering retiring, or are now retired for many years are
all welcome to attend, along with spouses, families, and
friends. Saturday, April 12th, 1:00pm-2:30pm in the Fireside Room. www.h-t.org/health-ministry.html

Summer, and the end of the school year, is quickly
approaching. While most families start thinking
about vacation plans or what camps to send the
kids to, many of those that we help start thinking
about how they are going to provide the extra
meals their kids will need now that they will not
be receiving the free breakfast and lunches from
the schools they attend. The good news is that
many, many schools within the Beaverton School
District, including Barnes, Beaver Acres, William
Walker and others are part of the summer meal
program. Anyone up to age 18 can come and get
lunch, and some times breakfast, at no cost.
Adults can come too, but for a fee. If you would
like more information about feeding locations,
you can go to summerfoodoregon.org and enter
your zip code or feel free to contact me and I will
be glad to assist.
Speaking of summer, this is the time of year I like
to collect and make available books for the kids
who come to us. While they may not be able to go
to camps, with your help we can keep them mentally engaged through reading. If you have any
gently used, or new, children or young adult
books you would like to donate, please just place
them in the food donation bins in the hall between
the church and school. We will make certain they
find a new home right here at our Food Closet.
If you know anyone who needs food, please have
them contact Care To Share at 503-591-9025. You
can also reference our web site for additional information.
Parishioners needing help are encouraged to contact Al directly, at the number above, and can be
assured that their request for help will be totally
confidential and private.

Care for God’s Creation - We show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation. Care for the earth is not just an Earth Day slogan, it is a
requirement of our faith. We are called to protect people and
the planet, living our faith in relationship with all of God’s
creation. This environmental challenge has fundamental
moral and ethical dimensions that cannot be ignored.
On June 2, the Environmental Protection Agency released
its proposed rule to limit the amount of carbon pollution that
existing power plants can dump into the atmosphere.
The Clean Air Act, passed by Congress in 1970 and amended
in 1990, is finally getting to tackle carbon pollution from the
nation’s coal power plants. Each state would have a broad
menu of carbon-cutting options, including energy efficiency
improvements, adding clean energy sources, implementing a
carbon tax, or instituting or joining a cap-and-trade system.
By 2020, states will have to have drop their carbon emissions
from existing power plants 25% from 2005 levels. EPA will
be soliciting comments from all Americans here before it is
finalized next year. Read more here. What can I do? Contact
the EPA (above) and ask them to finalize the proposal; reduce
your carbon footprint by buying locally and eating less meat;
participate in our Spring cleanup collection!

(right) Rounding out our series of Art Literacy field trips
to the Portland Art Museum, our 2nd graders recently
had their turn to visit the museum. Students enjoyed taking in many of the museum's offerings, including the Native American art exhibit.
One of the pieces in the Native American art exhibit.
(below) The end of the school year would not be complete without the annual egg drop. The 5th graders created vessels that would safely transport an egg from the
roof of the school down to the ground, without breaking.
Lots of fun (and a few broken eggs) was had by all!

Pentecost ~ John 20:19-23
The Holy Spirit is Jesus with us here on earth. Because of
our Baptism we, too, are disciples and are called to go
out and spread the Good News. Actually, Jesus expects us
to carry on his mission - just like those first disciples. Jesus breathed on a group of frightened disciples and gave
them the Holy Spirit. This gift of the Spirit enabled them
to go out and tell others about Jesus Christ and God’s unconditional love for all people. Through our baptism and
faith, we too are given graces and gifts, which we are
called to share with others.
How have you experienced the Holy Spirit in your life?
Jesus told his disciples, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose
sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you
retain are retained”.
Have you ever had a hard time forgiving or reconciling
with someone?
Were you able to reconcile? Describe what happened.
Holy Trinity Small Faith Community Update
The Small Faith Communities Ministry is inviting you to join in
small group conversation with 8-12 other parishioners. Challenge
yourself to set a little more time aside for prayer and share scripture
with other parishioners. There are many ongoing SFC’s at Holy
Trinity. The SFC’s listed below continue to meet on a regular basis
and openly welcome new members at any time. Please email Mike
& Kamio Strassmaier the specifics on joining or forming a new
community at [email protected] or 503.430.1500.
