Course Description
The Technical Theatre course extends and builds upon the
major objectives of both Drama 10, 20, 30 and Industrial
Education. In a practical manner in the context of theatrical
production students apply the more general foundation and
practical skills outlined in the aforementioned courses. For
ease of comparison, objectives from Drama 10, 20, 30 and
objectives in CTS are listed below.
Course Prerequisite
Drama 10 or Departmental Approval

Philosophy
Technical Theatre provides a continuum of theatre experiences that moves well beyond the
introductory or exploratory activities outlined in Drama 10, 20 30. Technical Theatre expands the
specific skills related to career fields so that students electing this sequence of courses will advance
to theatre schools or to careers in the theatre industry.
Rationale
Technical Theatre 15, 25, 35 is designed to extend the foundation skills outlined in Drama 10, 20,
30. Consequently students are encouraged to take Technical Theatre 15, 25, 35 in conjunction with
Drama 10, 20 30.
The major difference between Drama 10, 20, 30 and Technical Theatre 15, 25, 35 lies in the learning
strategy employed in these courses. In every case, the provincial curriculum should be understood as
the foundation for the sequence.
Learner Outcomes
The prerequisite / co-requisite for Technical Theatre 15 is Drama 10, or Departmental approval. A
student will have general knowledge of Drama 10 objectives listed in the Provincial Guide and will
understand the forms of drama and the process involved in the presentation of drama knowledge. In
Technical Theatre 15, all objectives will be mastered through an expanded theoretical understanding,
project work and/or school production work.
Since Technical Theatre 15 begins the sequence of student specialization for production, selections
for focus may be made among costume, lighting, make-up properties, set, sound, and stage
management. While any one skill concentration makes a complete course, students in Technical
Theatre 15 are expected to have a good general working knowledge of all the components since this is
the prerequisite course for Technical Theatre 25.

Assessment
TECHNICAL THEATRE 15-25-35
Teachers of these classes will use a variety of assessment tools.
We recommend that teachers provide students with an outline of what assessment tools
will be used to evaluate them. If learning experiences and related assessment tasks are to
fulfill their purposes, the expectations must be clear to both teacher and student. This
should be available at the beginning of each course so that students can plan, with the
teacher, a careful definition of work and leadership responsibility.
Although the Technical Theatre courses are designed for those who wish to make a
commitment to intense work in theatre production, this aim does not cancel the teacher’s
leadership responsibility. The teacher of the program bears the ultimate responsibility
for all school productions.
