Timber Finishes Guide
Intergrain is the Environmentally Responsible Choice for Timber Finishes
Conventional timber finishes contain Volatile Organic
Compounds (VOCs), which are the petroleum based
solvents that evaporate from the coating while it is drying.
These compounds are the unpleasant solvent fumes that
contribute to air pollution.

Decking Oil

UltraDeck
Traditional oil based timber finishes have a high
solvent level, this means that for every four litre can of
traditional decking oil, at least two litres of VOCs go
straight into the atmosphere.
Water based timber finishes have a very low solvent
level, therefore using water based timber finishes is a far
more environmentally responsible option than using a
solvent based equivalent. So, combined with being
healthier to use, Intergrain water based timber finishes are
much gentler on the environment.

Exterior Timber Preparations
Protecting Your Timber
Timber, as a product of nature, is subject to fungal attack, degradation from UV light, expansion and contraction with varying
moisture levels, variations in density and oil, tannin and resin content. All these characteristics impose considerable demand
on timber finishes. Preparation is vital for achieving the longest life span possible from your Intergrain Timber Finish.
Exterior Timber Surface Preparation
Step 1
New Bare Timber
• Allow timber to weather for approximately 4-6 weeks untill leaching of the tannins and
oils has ceased. After this period, proceed to Step 2.
Previously Painted, Stained or Oiled Timber
• All paints and coatings that seal the surface must be thoroughly removed back to bare timber.
A combination of a suitable paint remover and power washing, or sanding is recommended.
For previously oiled or stained surfaces that do not seal the surface commence at Step 2.
Weathered, Grey or Mould Affected Timber
• For best results, sand timber back to a fresh surface. Remove sanding dust, then proceed to Step 2.
Step 2
• Clean timber with Reviva closely following label instructions. Ensure surface is rinsed clean and allowed to thoroughly dry.
Step 3
• Test if the surface is ready for coating by sprinkling water on the timber. If the water beads on the surface repeat the
application of Reviva. If the water is absorbed into the timber it is ready for coating.
Step 4
• Fill nail holes and surface defects with a suitable timber putty as directed on the selected timber finish can instructions.
Reviva
™
A unique, high strength cleaner that restores grey, rust or tannin stained, mould or mildew affected
timber to a clean appearance suitable for coating. Reviva is also used to clean and prepare new
timber for coating by removing the dirt, tannins, oils and other contaminants that are present.
Uses: On all exterior timber including decking, garden furniture, weatherboards, pergolas,
window frames, trim, fences and marine timbers.

Exterior Timber Maintenance
UltraDeck and Nature’s Timber Oil Maintenance
•
The first indication of the need for recoating will be observed as signs
of dryness and loss of colour. Clean the timber thoroughly with Reviva
and recoat with UltraDeck, or Nature’s Timber Oil, following
application instructions.
NaturalStain Maintenance
•
•
•
•
•
•
8
For ease of maintenance conduct a routine 12 monthly inspection.
Best protection of the timber and ease of maintenance is ensured if the timber finish is recoated before deterioration of
the coating and timber underneath occurs.
The first indication of the need for recoating will be observed as patchiness or discolouration on edges and areas where
insufficient product has been applied.
If small areas of timber have weathered through to cause deterioration of the coating, clean the area thoroughly with
Reviva and recoat as for bare timber.
For large weathered areas remove the timber finish with a suitable paint remover and power washing, or sanding, and coat as
for bare timber.
To recoat the timber finish which is in good condition, simply clean the surface with Reviva and apply one coat of the
timber finish.
Timber Types
There are two main types of timber, softwood and hardwood. These terms are not an indication of the hardness of the wood
but refer to the type of seed the tree produces. For example, pine is a softwood tree, Kwila and Matai are hardwood trees.
Ensure that a dust mask is worn when sanding timber as sanding dust can be irritating to the breathing passages.

The final appearance of transparent and semi-transparent stains is affected by many factors including timber colour and
species, and the number of coats (the higher the number of coats, the darker the colour). This brochure should be used as
an indicative guide of colour only.
All drying times listed are based on a temperature of 20ºC and 50% humidity.
Variations from these conditions may extend or slow drying times.
