As spring starts to show up on the scene I love seeing all the plants starting to bud and the grass
starting to grow again. It is still early, but it won’t be long until color and life is bursting all around us
as creation wakes back up after a sleepy winter.
I have never been much of a gardener or had a green thumb. I am much better at killing plants
than growing them. But perhaps one of the major reasons is that I just haven’t done it very much. I
haven’t planted many things, or worked much soil. And no matter how much you can imagine the
sight of nice plants or flowers, they are never going to show up until you get your hands dirty.
Weeds, now those find a way to sprout themselves...no work required. But a nicely manicured
lawn or flower beds, that takes intentional effort.
That’s sort of like the spiritual life. You can have all the best intentions and imagine what your
Christian life ought to look like, but it just isn’t going to happen until you are willing to get your
hands dirty. You don’t have to try and make your life weedy. The temptations, distractions and
even evil...that will grow in your life without any effort. To see the likeness of Jesus grow in your
life will take some intentional nurture. Only God makes things grow. It is only his Spirit that can
shape and mold you. But you have to be willing to get your hands dirty too.
Recently, I started sharing some messages from the book of James. I think that is the essence of
this very practical New Testament letter. It is a collection of wisdom on how to grow into the
wholeness of the Christian life. If you have been saved by God’s grace, through faith in Jesus, how
do you grow up into that new identity? What does maturity in Christ really look like? James helps
address those questions.
Sometimes I wonder if we treat the Christian life like a flower bed that we just hope will grow some
nice flowers. We look out the window and picture the beautiful colors. We imagine the nice
fragrances drifting across the lawn. But as long as you look at the soil from a distance, those
images will remain just that...images in your mind. At some point you actually have to get some
tools and start the process of cultivating the ground.
James famously says in James 1:22, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.
Do what it says.” You cannot earn your salvation. You cannot make yourself grow. But you do
have to partner with God and allow him to help you actually live your faith out in real actions.
I want to spend my life, not dreaming about the fruit of the spiritual life, but actually harvesting. I
don’t want to just talk about the life of Jesus, I want to start living it. I don’t want to just dream
about taking leaps of faith, I actually want to jump.
What about you? Is there something God has put on your heart that you know you are called to
do? At some point you’ve got to stop thinking about it and get your hands dirty. Is there an area of
your life where you know you need to grow? How is God calling to prepare the soil of your heart so
he can bring new life and fruit? This Spring, let’s jump all in...and actually do the stuff we say we
believe.

Next Meeting - Thursday, April 6th at 1:00pm
The United Methodist Women of Grand Lake UMC meet on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 1:00pm
in the St. Paul’s campus church Lounge. We are meeting early because of Holy Week the
following week.
Our topic is “A Community for Climate Justice.” Our scripture is Genesis 1:27-31. This tells of
God’s gift of creation. He created Male and Female to care for this creation. This includes
plants, animals, fish, water and soil.
A special guest will discuss with us the plans we have in Mercer County to protect and
conserve our earth and its resources.
We have a call to action to conserve water. For example, in hotels a sign requests we use
towels and bedding an extra day. We were surprised to learn that manufacturers use three
gallons of water to make one piece of paper!

Clean up and prepare for Summer at Camp Wesley
The Family Ministry is gearing up to help get Camp Wesley ready for the Summer camping
season! This is the camp that most of our kids go to for Summer camp. We will be working on the
following projects:
 Work on the "epic adventure island." This will be installing decking, building stairs and
platforms out of pressure treated lumber. It will be a 15 foot by 30 foot floating deck.
 Hauling mulch and spreading mulch at the challenge course. This would be great for kids. We
can use the gator to get the mulch to the site and then use buckets and rakes to get the
mulch spread under the elements. This is to provide some cushion in case children fall during
the challenge course elements. If folks could bring buckets and rakes that would be great.
 Gutting and remodeling of gym bathrooms. Tearing out old drywall, replacing plumbing pipes,
repairing rotten wood studs/ceiling joists, reinstalling drywall and fiberglass reinforced panels,
reinstalling plumbing fixtures. Working up in the attic to waterproof the ceiling in case of roof
leaks in the future.
 There will be more projects available as we get closer, but these are the BIG ones that we
need some skilled help with!
We have scheduled 2 times to go and work on the Lodge: Saturday, May 6 we will leave the
church at 8:30am and be home in the early evening, lunch will be provided AND May 13. If you
would be interested in coming to camp and helping please see Matt O. If you are interested in
providing financially to help cover the cost of the materials please see Matt O.
We will have a pre-trip meeting on Sunday, April 23 at noon to meet and go over
these projects and answer any questions.

C.A.L.L. Donations
C.A.N. Sunday (Caring About Neighbors) at
St. Paul’s campus is April 2. Please place
items in the containers in the Lobby.
Montezuma’s campus is collecting
deodorant for C.A.L.L. (Community Action
Life Line) in April.
Harvest Table Donations
On the third Sunday of each month, we collect the following items for Harvest
Table, the free Saturday morning meal offered weekly in St. Paul’s Fellowship
Hall. They could use cake mixes, brownie mixes, cookies, icing, noodles, instant
potatoes, flour, sugar, salt, divided plates, napkins and plastic silverware. At
St. Paul's the bins will be in the lower lobby and at Montezuma the collection box
will be in the Commons. April 16 is the next Sunday for this collection. If everyone
pitches in, we can continue to support this worthwhile mission!
Harvest Table extends thanks and appreciation for those who have continued to support the
ministry by money, food, or time. If you have expressed interest in serving and haven't been
contacted by email or phone, please call the church office and we will get back with you. We
also continue to serve C.A.L.L. Cafe the third Tuesday every other month.
It is absolutely amazing that Harvest Table has been serving meals nearly every Saturday
morning for the past seven years. God has had complete control of who we serve from
Saturday to Saturday along with which guest may need someone to share happy or sad
happenings. Many servants who have served say they are so blessed by the guests and that
is why they continue to serve on a regular schedule. We are so blessed to have such a great
church family and community to believe, serve and financially support the ministry. We are
serving an average of 100-110 meals weekly. We are making a difference by touching lives
and making them whole in mind, body and spirit.

Easter Egg Offering—April 2nd
UMCOR, United Methodist Committee on Relief, is the church's relief agency, that
helps persons when disasters strike. Convinced that all people have God-given worth
and dignity, together we are assisting those impacted by crisis or chronic need.
Because of our giving, the United Methodist Church's compassionate response to
human suffering continues, by responding when tornadoes ripped through Oklahoma,
when children in Zimbabwe lost parents to AIDS, when a massive tsunami devastated
lives in Japan, and when the next mass crisis occurs, we will be prepared to respond.
The MATTHEW 25 Team would like to devote our special Easter Egg Offering to
UMCOR. Our gifts, put into the plastic Easter Eggs which will be in the pews April 2,
will help UMCOR assist persons in our country or around the World when a disaster
happens. The Eggs are to be returned on Palm Sunday. If you do not have an egg,
please mark an envelope, or memo your check, "Easter Egg Offering" and/or
"UMCOR." Thank you for offering a gift to help persons in a time of crisis, as a thank
you to Christ for his Love shown to us as He accepted Death that we might Live.

Appalachia Service Project, June 11-17
This Summer, our work crews will head to the poverty areas of
Central Appalachia to repair homes. Our work projects will
consist of a variety of skills. Most of the repairs are simple
tasks, things that the homeowner cannot afford or because of
disability, cannot perform themselves. Bring your basic hand
tools and love. ASP supplies our materials, meals and sets
up the projects.
Cost is $175.00 per person. We will be needing pickups and
SUVs/vans to haul the work crews.
The trip is open to Youth (age 14 & up) and Adults (of all
ages!). We have posted a signup sheet in the hall outside the
sanctuary across from the lounge. Please consider using your
gifts and come help make homes “Warmer, Safer, Dryer”.
For more information about the trip contact Jerry & Tammy
Barger or Mark Armstrong. Visit www.asphome.org for more
information on ASP. We are also listed in the Serve Magazine.

Appalachia Service Project
Appalachia Service Project is a Christian ministry, open to all people, that inspires hope and
service through volunteer home repair in Central Appalachia. Volunteers respond to a specific
need: housing. By putting aside their own needs and desires, ASP volunteers free themselves
to share talent, love, and concern with the people of Appalachia and with one another. We
have a team made up of both adults and youth that are sent out each
summer that help a community by being the hands and feet of Jesus
through cleaning up buildings and houses, and repairing people's
homes. Dates: June 11-17 Cost: Approximately $175
If interested sign up on the bulletin board across from St. Paul’s
Lounge on 2nd floor or call the church office at 419-586-6621. Mark
