Did you know . . . . . . ,
Lazarus and Bummer were two stray dogs that roamed the
streets of San Francisco, California, in the early 1860s.
Recognized for their unique bond and their prodigious rat-killing
ability, they became a fixture of city newspapers, and were
exempted from local ordinances and immortalized in cartoons.
IRISH DOG BREEDS
There are nine native Dogs of Ireland,

Turnspit Dogs
Throughout history, dogs have been called upon to perform dozens of tasks, from guiding
the blind to fighting enemies on the battlefields. But did you know that centuries ago,
dogs also served in the kitchen. The so-called turnspit dog was a sturdy, long-bodied,
short-legged canine that was used to operate a wheel (something like a hamster wheel),
which would turn a roast on a spit, thus cooking the meat evenly. Turnspits were also
used for powering treadmills that would pump water or churn butter, among other
things. The harsh treatment of turnspit dogs at least partially inspired Henry Bergh to
start the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Although now
extinct, it is believed that the turnspit dog is probably related to the modern-day Glen of
Imaal Terrier.
FUN TRIVIA
*Foxhounds may be the oldest breed of dog in America. They are recorded in the colonies in
1650. George Washington was an early fancier.
*The first dog registered with the American kennel Club was an English Setter named Adonis
in 1884.
*During the Renaissance, detailed portraits of the dog as a symbol of fidelity and loyalty
appeared in mythological, allegorical, and religious art throughout Europe, including works by
Leonardo da Vinci, Diego Velázquez, Jan Van Eyck, and Albrecht Durer.
*Dogs and cats turn in circles before lying down because in the wild this instinctive action
turns long grass into a bed.
*The Antpitta Avis Canis Ridgley is a bird species that barks like a dog.
*Zebras are equids, members of the horse family. They have excellent hearing and eyesight
and can run at speeds of up to 35 miles per hour (56 kilometers per hour).
IRISH JOKES
The Dying Irish Nun
The wise old Mother Superior from County Tipperary in Ireland was dying. The Irish nuns gathered around
her bed trying to make her comfortable. They gave her some warm milk to drink, but she refused it. Then
one nun took the glass back to the kitchen.
Remembering a bottle of Irish whiskey they had received as a gift the previous Christmas, she opened it
and poured a generous amount into the warm milk.
When she walked back to Mother Superior’s bed, she held the glass to her lips. Mother Superior drank a
little, then a little more. Before they knew it, she had drunk the whole glass down to the last drop.
“Mother,” the nuns asked with earnest, “please give us some wisdom before you die.”
She raised herself up in bed with a pious look on her face and said, “Don’t sell that cow.”

The Priest's Collar
A priest was invited to attend a house party. Naturally, he was properly dressed and wearing his Priest's
collar. A little boy kept staring at him the entire evening. Finally, the priest asked the little boy what he
was staring at. The little boy pointed to the priest's neck. When the priest finally realized what the boy
was pointing at, He asked the boy, "Do you know why I am wearing that?"
The boy nodded his head and replied, "Yes Father, It kills fleas and ticks for up to three months".

DOGS
Your dog loves you for who you are and is
lost when you are not around to comfort
them. Their feelings get hurt easily and
they can be very sensitive to emotional
disturbances that occur on the home front.
They care for other animals in the household as well as you. They will let you know
they are here to serve you and love you no
matter what.
CATS
Your cat is usually the first one there to
comfort you in times of need. Expressive
eyes and a look of understanding can give
you great comfort. Avoid loud noises and
talk in very soothing tones to them. They
can be your true companion for life,
bonding immediately with you on a very
close level.
Cats are "obligate carnivores,"
which m eans they have
nutritional needs that must be
met by eating meat (unlike
humans). A vegetarian diet is not
healthy for a cat.

Where in the World
DUBLIN ZOO
Dublin Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the world but has gone through
an impressive metamorphosis over the last decade. The most recent
addition is the Kaziranga Forest Trail, a wonderful new habitat for the
zoo's breeding herd of Asian elephants.
Dublin Zoo first opened its doors on 1st September 1831 and was
known as the Zoological Gardens Dublin. Its then 15 acres in the
Phoenix Park featured 46 mammals and 72 birds donated by London
Zoo. Visitors flocked to the zoo to marvel at animals they had only read
about or seen in pictures...in some cases, animals they had never heard
of!
Zoo milestones include an open day in 1838 - attended by 20,000
people - to celebrate Queen Victoria's Coronation. The first giraffe
arrived in 1844 and the first pair of lions - Natal and Natalie - arrived in
1855, producing their first cubs two years later. Reptiles got their own
house in 1876.
Despite severe problems during the 1916 Easter Rising and World War
II, the zoo survived and now occupies 40 hectares with around 650
animals and birds from all over the globe.
