Planting Seeds Reaching for the Stars 2016 Annual Report PEP Programs PEP DAY TREATMENT CENTERS provide a specialized school and mental health environment for school-age children, the majority of whom have been identified with an emotional disturbance, autism and/or other complex developmental disabilities. These centers provide a therapeutic environment where there are expectations for normal, healthy behavior, where competence is stressed, and where energy is focused on finding and building strengths that promote positive growth. PEP CONNECTIONS coordinates services for children and youth who are experiencing serious emotional difficulties and are determined to be at-risk for deeper system involvement and/or returning home or to the community from an out-of-home placement. PEP Connections works with the child and everyone involved in the child’s life to create a plan of care aimed at helping the child access community supports and begin on a path to success. Children receiving care through PEP EARLY CHILDHOOD PLUS are experiencing significant social, emotional, behavioral and/or developmental challenges that are interfering with their daily living. Utilizing consultation, training and support services, PEP helps the child and the adults in the child’s life better manage those challenges so that these children will find success in school and in life. PEP ASSIST is a consulting and training service provided to schools and programs designed to teach best practices for working with at-risk and special needs children. Services are individually tailored to meet the unique needs of each district. Working in collaboration with public schools, PEP Assist staff develops innovative programs and staff development opportunities so that children with severe and challenging behaviors may be served successfully in their school of residence. MISSION Positive Education Program helps troubled and troubling children learn and grow. PROGRAMMATIC PHILOSOPHY At PEP, our work with children and families is grounded in the Principles of Re-EDucation (Re-ED) and The Sanctuary Model. Re-ED, a child and family centered approach to care for children and youth facing mental health challenges, is an open paradigm that accentuates the strengths within each individual. The Sanctuary Model creates a safe, nurturing therapeutic environment that supports children and youth impacted by trauma. It helps them reorganize their self-defeating beliefs and instills hope for the future. Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world. Harriet Tubman At Positive Education Program, we have great dreams for our kids. We know that their young lives have been met by challenges and too often by trauma. It is our responsibility to be certain their lives and experiences are defined by and designed to their potential, not their problems. In this work, we are planting seeds, seeds that require a lot of support and nurture to take root and flourish. We shine our lights on the strengths that live inside our kids, knowing that meaningful success comes from building on those strengths. It is a slow and deliberate process, one that requires extreme patience and a passion for cultivating resilience. Yet, with each small step, each small victory, we know progress is being made and that these are moments to be celebrated. As Harriet Tubman states, “Every great dream begins with a dreamer.” At PEP, our dreamers are also our stars – our caring and competent staff who have committed themselves to the proposition that all children have promise and potential. With each young life that is now defined by hope and possibilities instead of pain and trauma, their stars take rise and we take joy in knowing we are doing our part to change the world for the better for our children and their families. Robert A. DeAngelis Chair, Board of Directors Frank A. Fecser, Ph.D. Chief Executive Officer 3 Sally McClintock Consultant / Trainer PEP Early Childhood Plus “With our kids, there is always a reason for their behavior. I believe it’s the highest form of respect to see their perspective and validate their feelings. When you look inside you find that there are real strengths. I structure the environment for their success, not my comfort. This often means letting go of control and empowering them. You come to realize that what you offer to others you strengthen in yourself. You are planting a seed. There is no magic sprinkle dust.” 97% of young children on the verge of expulsion from child care were able to be successfully maintained in a child care setting, thanks to support from PEP Early Childhood Plus. 4 John Dober Behavior Coach PEP Assist “It’s my job to go into each classroom and shine a light on the strengths in the students and the teachers, to become that honest broker who brings a sense of calm and optimism. I’ve seen tough things and I’ve seen them get better. No matter the situation, at the end of each day you want each kid going home feeling good about something. You need to celebrate each small victory, each small step, and know that you are helping move things in a positive direction.” 93% of students supported by PEP Assist developed the skills so that they could remain in their home school district. 5 Richele Banks Teacher-Counselor PEP Ireland “You may be the one person who touches them, that encourages them, that says something kind to them, that smiles at them. You want to be that person because you have the power to make a real difference. These kids crave structure; they want people to have high expectations of them. I give a lot and I expect the same in return. We work from relationships of mutual respect. In my classroom, we look out for each other. We help each other out.” 92% of PEP Day Treatment Center students 6 David Weiss Occupational Therapist PEP Prentiss Autism Center “You don’t know when those opportunities to teach will present themselves, but you never want to miss one of those moments. For our kids, everything has to be intentional for every kid all the time. It’s a lot like coaching and knowing that from that moment we cross the line onto the field, it’s full go. It’s all a team effort, and I get fired up by other engaged staff. They fuel my passion for this work.” achieved their individually-determined growth targets. 7 Tory Coats Care Manager PEP Connections “I tell my kids that every play is going to run through you. We’re going to figure out your strengths and your motivation. You are our superstar. You’re my LeBron. But then I also tell them, see mom over there – she’s Coach Tyronn Lue and I am the GM. My job is to find the supporting cast that is going to help you shine; that is going to help you be that star.” 88% of the parents of PEP Connections clients report that they are now hopeful about their child’s future. 8 Public Partners SCHOOLS CHILD SERVING SYSTEMS Akron Public Schools Alliance City Schools Amherst Exempted Village Schools Avon Lake City Schools Avon Local Schools Bay Village City Schools Beachwood City Schools Bedford City Schools Bellevue City Schools Berea City Schools Berkshire Local Schools Brecksville-Broadview Heights City Schools Brooklyn City Schools Brunswick City Schools Buckeye Local Schools – Medina Clearview Local Schools Cleveland Heights-University Heights City Schools Cleveland Metropolitan School District Cloverleaf Local Schools Columbia Local Schools Constellation Schools, LLC Crestwood Local School District Cuyahoga Heights Local Schools East Cleveland City Schools Edison Local Schools Elyria City Schools Euclid City Schools Fairview Park City Schools Firelands Local School District Garfield Heights City Schools Hudson City Schools Huron City School District Keystone Local Schools Lakewood City Schools Lorain City Schools Educational Service Center of Lorain County Maple Heights City Schools Mayfield City Schools Medina City Schools Midview Local Schools Monroeville Local Schools Near West Intergenerational School New London Local Schools Nordonia Hills City Schools North Olmsted City Schools North Ridgeville City Schools North Royalton City Schools Norwalk City Schools Oberlin City Schools Olmsted Falls City Schools Orange City Schools Painesville City Local Schools Parma City Schools Perkins Local Schools Richmond Heights Local Schools Rocky River City Schools Sandusky City Schools Shaker Heights City Schools Sheffield-Sheffield Lake City Schools Solon City Schools South Euclid Lyndhurst City Schools Stow-Munroe Falls City Schools Strongsville City Schools Twinsburg City Schools Vermilion Local Schools Warrensville Heights City Schools Wellington Exempted Village Schools Western Reserve Local Schools Westlake City Schools Wickliffe City Schools Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board of Cuyahoga County Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities Cuyahoga County Division of Children and Family Services Cuyahoga County Family and Children First Council Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court Cuyahoga County Office of Health and Human Services Cuyahoga County Tapestry System of Care Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County Help Me Grow of Cuyahoga County Invest in Children, Office of Early Childhood Lorain County Board of Mental Health Ohio Department of Education Ohio Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services Starting Point State Support Team – Region 3 United Way of Greater Cleveland Thanks to these stars – our public partners and philanthropists – PEP was able to change the world for the better for 2,776 children and their families. 9 Philanthropists DONORS The Abington Foundation Laurie Albright Kris Alicea Goldie K.
