If there is only ONE noun
that owns something:
Add an ‘s
One girl has a kite.
The girl’s kite.
That kite only belongs to one girl.

owns something:
Add an ‘ to the end
The boys have a dog.
The boys’ dog.
The dog belongs to more than one boy.
